I've been working on this fic for a little while, and I thought that now that I've got my CR forums account working (Thanks Croik!) I might as well post it here for those who haven't seen it :)

Title: Stacking the Deck
Author: Skrcha (Marisa)
Rating: Teen and up
Spoilers?: AA & JFA
Summary: Manfred von Karma can't get any peace, not even in death! At the moment of his execution, an evil spirit enlists his help to rig a trial -- with the promise of revenge on Wright and Edgeworth in return. Meanwhile, Phoenix is hired to defend eccentric scientist Jack Fenton against murder charges. However, when ghostly happenings tip the scales against them, Jack's son Danny teams up with Maya to crack the mysteries surrounding the case.
Notes: Uh... crossover with the Danny Phantom cartoon series, but you don't need to know it to understand the fic.
Warnings: Karma dies in the first chapter. (o snap i spoil'd it for you!)
Chapter Count: 3 so far

I've already seen this on ff.net (and commented on some of the chapters too, I think), but I hope I can give you a more detailed review here.

First, I want to reiterate that I love the idea of this crossover, although I'm not entirely sure I can explain why beyond the inexplicable mental Manfred/Vlad connection I mentioned before. Maybe I'm just too great a fan of both universes for my own good.

Using Kurian Village as an entry point is something that would have never even occured to me, but it makes a lot of sense. I haven't played T&T yet, so maybe you know something I don't, but I can imagine that there's something spiritual about that location. A natural ghost portal wouldn't be completely out of place there.

Quote:
"I think their love is like a river," Pearl's soft voice broke in. "I once asked Mister Larry about it, and he started talking about a river in... what's it called? A river in a jipt."

Phoenix's eye twitched.

...It actually took me a few moments to get that joke. I'm so slow. :sadshoe:

Quote:
A gigantic, bright-green scorpion-like creature hissed at them, whipping its tail in warning. Vlad scowled. "Oh, curds and whey, I don't have the time for this!"

Methinks Vlad's been spending too much time around the Dairy King. :P I liked it, although I admit it's nursery rhyme origins reminded me more of Lancer than Vlad.

Quote:
"...and such as it is, the district attorney assigned to prosecute the case would be a much more suitable target to... overshadow, as you put it."

Spoiler: Plot speculation
God, this is why I hate Von Karma; he just can't drop a grudge. I knew he was going to go after Miles somehow, but this seems more twisted than what I'd originally hypothesized (albeit not entirely unexpected). He spent 15 years molding his mind, what's another three days of invading it and taking complete control?

And of course I can only imagine what other things he's going to screw up outside of the trial while he's taking over his body.

I confess that I find the whole Danny/Maya angle a bit odd; Maya has three years on Danny, and while that's not a huge age gap for most relationships, it's a bit harder to swallow when Danny's still in high school (and Maya's... not). To be honest, I would have expected Nick to be a bit more cautious about the whole situation (although Pearl's reaction to this threat against her precious vision of a Nick/May relationship is great). On the other hand, Maya's young enough at heart that it might not be as big an issue as I'm making it out to be....

Quote:
Jack leaned back, clapping his hand on Danny's shoulder. "Ghosts and samurai movies... this one's a keeper for sure! Hey, Maya, what do you think of fudge?"

Maya's never-ending grin only widened. "Fudge is awesome!"

"Danny," Jack's tone suddenly turned serious, and his grip tightened to the point where Danny thought he might get a bruise. "If you break this girl's heart, you're grounded for life. Understand?"

Your vision of Jack is perfect. I just thought you should know that....

Quote:
"Withering away! Every moment you spend calling yourself Jack's son, you are letting your powers shrivel up and die a little bit more!"

There was a pause. "That was a stupid metaphor," Daniel's voice had gained confidence, "all things considered."

It's a depressing thought in retrospect, but it still made me laugh.

Von Karma giving Danny advice.... That's troubling for a number of reasons. I was expecting a duel of sorts, a pull for power, between Von Karma and Masters, but not over Danny. I'm not surprised that he's attracted to the kid's potential, and I think it's very in character for him to want him for his own dark purposes, I'm just curious (and kind of afraid) to see how he'll knock Vlad out of the picture to get him.

Also: Gregory needs to crop up at some point and kick Von Karma's ass. Just saying. :keiko:

I'm very eager to read the next chapter.

Exactly! I also wonder if :gregory: is also in the Ghost Zone as well?

AA Case 4 and STD Spoilers

Spoiler:
The DL-6 incident where he lost his life and his son to Von Karma even though he said that :yogi: was the one that killed him in the end he never really knew who murdered him there is also a possibility that he knew his son might have shot him and accused :yogi: to prevent him from going to jail.

I don't think that fits with the Gregory Edgeworth that you presented in you fan fiction in any case I can easily see him having unfinished business left to do just like Mia Fey had to bring Redd White to justice and also guide Phoenix as he goes through his trials of being a defense lawyer. If Mia and Gregory are in the ghost zone then maybe both of them will meet up? I can easily see them team up as they try to figure out what Vlad and Von Karma are up to! :gregory:

The scene with Young Miles and his father in the dream reminded me of the movie Ghost (The Six Sense referenced it too) where the dead can communicate with the living better when they are asleep and dreaming. In fact I won't be surprise if the dream segments are exactly that and Gregory still watches over his son even giving him understanding and reassurance that he did the right thing in the end too bad Miles cut off his father just when he was going to tell him that he loves him.

I can't see why :gregory: will stand by and let :karma: destroy Miles life like that maybe it will take a certain defense attorney by the name of Mia Fey to spur him into action.

Also you probably seen the pictures posted before on this forum but here they are Gregory Edgeworth channeled by Peal and Maya Fey both picures are posted by Luna on the page of this topic.

Just thought I throw that in there. :phoenix: I'm looking for to your next chapter and predict much Edgeworth angst in the future!

I saw this on ff.n and liked it. And I, like others, want to see Gregory show up. Because he's cool.
