Case 1: Turnabout Shinobi Part 1

---

Phoenix Wright sat in his office bored, as usual. Like always, he was in a slump. Most people would welcome the downtime after his assistant, Maya Fey was kidnapped and nearly killed during a trial four months ago. There was no question the Guilty verdict ultimately led to her safe return but now he was seriously considering a change of professions. That is, until a strange person came to his office that day.

“Excuse me? Is this Phoenix Wright's office?” She couldn't have been more than sixteen, he thought. Her attire told him that like Maya, she wasn't a city gal, either. He'd started to wonder what he'd done to attract folks like her and Maya.

“Yes, speaking.” he replied, his eyes training on the girl's partially revealed bosom. “Can I help you?”

“Sure, but only if after you're done staring at my breasts.” the girl spat as she crossed her arms.

“Sorry,” he said as he moved his eyes to her face. “What can I do for you?”

“My name is Sheena Fujibayashi.” she began. “I need your help. One of my descendants named Suzu was arrested on suspicion of murder and is being held at what your authorities call a...detention center? Anyway, a Detective Dick Gumshoe told me the only hope she'd have is if I came to you and asked you to represent her in court.”

“Fujibayashi...why does that name sound familiar...?” Wright asked aloud thoughtfully.

“We are descended from a long line of Ninja trained in the Igaguri style.” she explained. “It's well-known all over the world.”

“No...that's not it...” Wright trailed. “Never mind. Just what is your relation to Suzu?”

“She's my...great nice?” Sheena answered cautiously. “I'm sixteen and she's ten.”

“Ah, I see.” he replied. “If you're ready for it, let's go see Suzu.” The pair walked down the street and across town to the Detention Center. Most people who knew about Phoenix had learned all about the strange clients he represented and seeing Sheena, thought nothing of her. They arrived in time to see Suzu about to stab one of the guards with a small knife.

“What's going on here?” Sheena demanded.

“Sheena!” Suzu exclaimed in surprise.

“Oh, boy...” Phoenix muttered to himself. “What did I just agree to do?”

“That's no way to behave in there!” Sheena scolded. “You are a ninja. Every thing's going to be okay now—I brought him.”

“You mean Phoenix Wright, Ace Attorney?” Suzu asked in amazement. Wright sat up at this. Looks like there was no mistake about who they wanted to represent them. “Please, Mr. Wright!” said Suzu. “This is all a mistake. Sheena can tell you! I didn't kill anyone!”

“I didn't say you did, Sue.” Phoenix replied. “I wasn't there so you're going to need to tell me what happened.”

“My name's Suzu.” she said flatly. “I don't like nicknames but I will tell you everything I know. Sheena and I were training in the forest east of here when we heard a commotion. When we went over to investigate we were attacked. I threw a Kunai in the direction of the attacker and it nailed him in the head. Upon closer inspection we discovered it was Zelos Wilder, the Chosen of Tethe'alla.”

“Chosen?” Phoenix repeated. “What's that?”

“Basically, it means he's supposed to be the savior of the world but all he cares about is getting women in bed.” Sheena replied. “Some Chosen he was.”

“Why do I get the feeling you've got a history with that guy?” Phoenix wondered aloud.

“You have no idea.” said Sheena. “Now, if it was me I'd have no problem fessing up but Suzu wouldn't do something like that!”

“”What happened after you discovered he was dead?” Phoenix asked Suzu.

“We called the Police and they came within ten minutes.” she replied. “After questioning the both of us they said they couldn't find whoever it was that attacked us and placed me under a rest.”

“That's when Detective Gumshoe told you to find me?” Wright asked Sheena.

“Yeah, that's the jist of it.” she replied.

“I know I should've asked this already but where and when did he die?” Phoenix asked. “Either of you can field this one.”

“Yesterday in the East Forest.” said Suzu. “He died at 6:45PM.”

“Hmm...that would mean the scene of the crime is probably swarming with police...” Phoenix remarked. “I think I'll go anyway just to see if there were witnesses.”

“What about me?” asked Suzu.

“I'm afraid you'll have to wait here until the trial tomorrow.” Phoenix replied. “And don't worry—I'll do everything I can to clear your name! Before all that though, I need to have it in writing that you want me to represent you in court.”

“Here you go.” said Sheena as she handed him an envelope. “I drafted this as a sort of introductory letter.” After looking it over, Wright pocketed it. Sheena and Phoenix then left the Detention Center and headed across town to East Forest. The place was crawling with police brass and media people trying to get pictures. Wright wondered if there was any chance he'd run into Detective Dick Gumshoe in the forest. As luck would have it, the eccentric Detective was indeed at the crime scene.

“Don't take ONE step further, Pal!” Gumshoe said or rather, yelled at Phoenix and Sheena. “I don't know what made you think to come here Phoenix but this is an open and shut case.”

“That's what you always say...” Wright replied grimly. “And then I always get lucky...”

“Aha ha ha!” the detective laughed. “Well this case is different. Not only was there a witness with credible evidence but we just got the autopsy report back, too. I take it since that girl's with you you're gonna represent Suzu in court tomorrow?”

“That's right.” said Phoenix. The two exchanged papers—Wright giving the detective the Defense Request Letter and Gumshoe giving the attorney the autopsy report. “Say, Detective.” said Wright after putting away his homework for tonight. “Can I at least know the name of the witness?”

“Not a chance.” Gumshoe replied. He looked around as if to make sure no one was watching and beckoned for him to lean closer. “We just found out a new Judge is in town and this is going to be the first case he's going to preside over. The weird thing about him is no one's seen him before.”

“A new judge?!” Wright exclaimed. “Well, I guess the normal one had to go sometime...” Without anything further to do, Wright returned to his office to review the Autopsy Report. Sheena didn't have a place to stay so he let her sleep on the couch in the office. While she was doing that, he sat down at his desk and reviewed the file:

Victim-Zelos Wilder
Occupation: Chosen
Age: 22
Cause of Death: Kunai lodged in the cerebellum thrown from distance.

Suspect: Suzu Fujibayashi
Occupation: Ninja
Age: 10

“Hmm....” Wright thought for a moment and thought it a good idea to call in for some backup. He picked up the phone and dialed the number for Fey Manor in Kurain Village, which was a good 2 hours away...

---

The following day Phoenix, Sheena and Suzu met in the Defendant Lobby. He wanted to prep them for what would await them though he doubted it would be of much help. He must've made his thoughts on the forthcoming case a tad too obvious, as the girls simply stared at him. “Don't tell me you want to give up already?!” Sheena exclaimed. “We haven't even gone in the court room yet!”

“Don't get the wrong idea.” Wright replied.” I'm not worried about the case so much. I'm just wondering when it is my assistant is going to show up.”

“Here I am!” A new voice exclaimed.

“AHH!” Wright screamed. He was so startled his nearly jumped in Sheena's arms. When he saw who it was he felt both relief and embarrassment. “Maya, you made it! Good job!”

“I would've come sooner but Pearls insisted she come, too.” Maya replied with a smile.

“Oh, how rude of me.” said Phoenix. “Sheena and Suzu, this is Maya and Pearl Fey. Maya and Pearl, this is Suzu and Sheena Fujibayashi.”

“For real?!” Maya exclaimed in shock. “THE Sheena Fujibayashi from Tales of Symphonia?”

“I...guess...” Sheena replied.

“Tales of Symphonia?” asked Phoenix. “What's that?”

“Oh my gosh, I'm your biggest fan!” Maya exclaimed as she took out two pieces of paper and held them up in a pose. “When I grow up, I want to be just like you!”

“I thought you wanted to a great Channeler?” asked Wright.

“That's what I thought, too.” Pearl piped up.

“Can't I be both?” Maya asked dejectedly. “Still, I can't believe Sheena from Tales of Symphonia is here!”

“What's Tales of Sim-phony-a?” asked Pearl.

“Everyone please report to the courtroom!” they heard the Bailiff announce. It was show time.

“Hey, Pearls?” Phoenix said before they went inside.

“Mia, right?” Pearl guessed.

“You know me too well.” Phoenix replied with a smile.

---

“All rise!” The bailiff said once everyone was in position. Phoenix was none too surprised to see that the prosecutor in charge of this case was Miles Edgeworth. Edgeworth was a prosecutor known to use any means necessary to get a Guilty Verdict. Until he met Wright himself in court the man had a perfect record and later on, Edgeworth himself stood trial for murder and with Phoenix as his Defense Attorney! Although he appeared to be a cold hearted man from the outside, Phoenix knew what kind of man Edgeworth really was but he also knew that once they were in court, it was all business.

“Where's the judge?” asked Maya as they stood opposite Edgeworth. The sound of a door opening and closing answered her question. Out of the door came a tall man with Auburn hair that partially covered his eyes. Although he wore the traditional robe of a judge, the sheath of a sword was also visible at his side. He took his position and sat down, after which the rest of the court was allowed to be seated.

“The honorable Judge Kratos Aurion presiding over the case of the State VS Fujibayashi.” The Bailiff announced.

“Kratos?” Mia (being channeled by Pearl) said. “Where have I heard that name...?”

“Never heard of him.” said Wright.

“I have some business to attend to after court so I'd like the Prosecution to deliver its opening statement.” said Kratos. “Is the Prosecution ready?”

“Yes, your honor.” Edgeworth replied.

“And the Defense?” the Seraph asked.

“Yes, your Honor.” Wright replied.

“In that case, let's begin.” said Kratos. “The opening statement, please.”

“Yes, your honor.” said Edgeworth. “At approximately 6:45PM yesterday, a man was killed in the most horrendous way imaginable. Zelos Wilder was minding his own business when he was struck in the head with this--” he held up a bag containing the Kunai. “which killed him instantly. Soon after, a witness—the victim's sister, in fact—called the authorities.”

“What happened after that?” asked Kratos.

“Well, the authorities arrived in a matter of minutes and cordoned off the area.” Edgeworth replied. “After questioning the witness, the defendant and her accomplice, Sheena were immediately placed into custody.”

“Why was only the defendant arrested and not Sheena?” asked Phoenix. “What I'm sure everyone in this courtroom would like to know is why a 10 year old girl is standing trial today--”

:objection:

Edgeworth exclaimed. “My first witness will be more than happy to tell you why that is. I believe you know her as well, Wright. I call to the witness stand Ms. Ema Skye!” Phoenix let out a gasp. Ema was the sister of Lana Skye, a Prosecutor who was caught up in the biggest police corruption scandal in state history. It was only with Ema's help that he was able to not only prove Lana's innocence but uncover the real truth about an old case the Skye sisters had been involved in as well.

“Hi, Phoenix!” Ema called to him from the witness stand. “Long time, no see!”

“Oh, boy...” Wright gulped. He suddenly remembered Ema was a Scientific Investigator—in training.

“Please state your name and occupation for the court.” Edgeworth said to her.

“I'm Ema Skye and I'm a Forensic Scientist!” she said and then added. “But then again Miles, I thought you knew that already?”

“Yes, quite.” Edgeworth replied, clearly taken aback. “Please testify for the court the account of what your saw yesterday. I don't think I have to tell you that it's a bad idea to withhold information in a murder case.”

“Alright, alright.” said Ema in a pretty nervous voice.

“That was pretty low—even for him...” Phoenix, Maya and Mia said almost in unison.

“It was a pretty clear evening.” she began. “I was walking in the forest pretending to prep a potential crime scene! I never expected to actually put was I was practicing to use so quickly. I heard what sounded like two people fighting and then I heard a body fall. When I rushed over, I saw Sheena, the defendant and the victim. The victim wasn't moving and he had some kind of curved blade sticking out of his head.” With that, Ema was done testifying.

“I see.” said Kratos. “It's my understanding the Igaguri Style incorporates projectile weapons like shrukiens, smoke bombs and small knives. From the looks of the autopsy report, there couldn't possibly be any other cause of death.”

“Well put, your Honor.” Edgeworth said with a bow.

“In any case, I look forward to seeing if the Defense's Cross-Examination reveals anything that may be of use.” said Kratos. “Mr. Wright, if you would.”

“Of course, your honor.” said Phoenix as Ema recalled the testimony. There's something about what she just said that didn't sit quite right...

“It was a pretty clear evening.” she began again. “I was walking in the forest pretending to prep a potential crime scene!”

:holdit:

Phoenix cut in. “You're saying you were in the forest pretending to investigate the scene of a murder?”

“Why yes, Phoenix.” Ema replied cheerfully. “After you helped my sister out last year I thought I'd get in some practice.”

“Why would you do something like that?” Wright asked thoughtfully.

:objection:

Edgeworth roared. He slammed his hand on the table and sternly looked a Phoenix. “If you would allow her, she would give you the answer to that.”

“I never expected to actually put was I was practicing to use so quickly.” Ema continued. “I heard what sounded like two people fighting and then I heard a body fall. When I rushed over, I saw Sheena, the defendant and the victim. The victim wasn't moving and he had some kind of curved blade sticking out of his head.”

:objection:

Wright roared. He slammed his hands on the table and stared at Ema, his eyes flashing. “A 'Curved Blade”, you say?”

“Ah, yes, that's correct.” Ema replied. “It was some kind of sword or something.”

“Please don't lie to me, Ema.” Wright replied as he presented the Kunai. “Does THIS look like a curved blade to you?”

“OH!” she exclaimed in surprise.

“Now, you and I know each other from that other case.” Wright began. “As a Scientific Investigator in training, I'd expect you to not make such a crucial mistake!”

“My apologies!” Ema exclaimed. “It seems I've made a grievous error here.”

“Seems?!” Edgeworth retorted in surprise.

“Ms. Skye, do you have an explanation for this?” Kratos demanded.

“Well, from where I saw the victim I'm sure I saw some kind of curved weapon.” she replied. Is that even possible? Wright thought to himself. Only the Kunai was recovered from the scene...

“It seems there's more to this case than we originally thought.” Mia remarked, apparently reading his mind.

“Explain yourself!” Edgeworth demanded. “You're telling me the weapon Zelos Wilder was stabbed with was NOT a Kunai?”

“Yes.” she replied. “If you'd like, I can tell you more about the state of the body when I found it.”

“Yes, please do.” Kratos replied.

“When I found the victim, he was lying face down.” she began. “He was wearing a white shirt and black baggy pants. At his side was an empty sheath—it looked as if he'd been killed with his own weapon. That's all.”

“...” was the reaction of everyone in the courtroom.

“Hmm...that's certainly something...” Mia remarked.

“If what she's saying is true...!” Wright exclaimed. “Like the case last year--”

“Zelos was killed twice in the same night?!” Edgeworth exclaimed.

“Sorry but no.” a new voice said. “Close enough, though.” Everyone turned to see Detective Dick Gumshoe and another man approach the witness stand.

White shirt. Black pant. No... Wright thought to himself.

“Zelos Wilder?!” Kratos exclaimed. “You're alive! But your DEAD body was found last night in the forest. Explain yourself!”

“Yeah, sorry about all this.” He replied with a strange smile. “But as everyone can see, I'm alive and well. I came here just in time to hear that last bit, though. I hate to say it but two people who look remarkably like me were killed last night. One of them was killed with his own sword and the other was killed after taking a Kunai to the head. I don't know why my name was put on the Death Certificate but when I say my name in the obituaries this morning, I thought it a good idea to haul ass down here and get everything cleared up.”

“Hmm....under the current circumstances it would seem we have no trial.” Kratos remarked. “True, someone resembling Zelos was murdered last night but another person was also murdered last night as well. Considering there is also the possibility of a separate suspect, I'm going to declare a mistrial. In the meantime, I want the events of what happened last night to be thoroughly investigated. Is that Understood, Mr. Edgeworth?”

“Yes, your honor.” Edgeworth replied. “I'll also make sure whomever misidentified the bodies is properly punished.”

“Mr. Wright, I'm going to release the defendant to your custody in the meantime.” Kratos continued. “There is a possibility she may be acquitted of all charges depending on what turns up in the investigation. Until the new trial, Suzu is not to leave the state. Is that clear?”

“Yes, your honor.” Wright replied.

“Seriously, Mr. Wright.” said Kratos as he stared at him. “You don't want to know what happens to people who defy me.” Phoenix could almost feel Kratos entering his mind. “But something tells me that won't be a problem with you.” With a bang of the gavel, the mistrial was made official.

---

“That has got to be one of the strangest twists I've ever seen in court...” Phoenix trailed as he, the Feys, Suzu and Sheena gathered in the Defendant Lobby. “I wonder what's going on?”

“You do know what this means, don't you?” Mia asked him. “Thanks to Ema's testimony and the deceased showing up alive today, Suzu was cleared of murder. True, there's now two bodies to think about but because of how one of them died, that made it impossible for Suzu to be tried for it.”

“Still, something about all this is strange, don't you think?” asked Maya. “Both of the people who were killed last night look like Zelos. It could be possibly the murders are connected.”

“No doubt they are.” everyone heard a familiar voice say. “Not only that, both of the victims are, too.” Everyone turned to see Edgeworth, Zelos and Gumshoe approach them.

“Did you find out anything?” Wright asked him.

“A suspect was just arrested a short time ago.” Edgeworth replied. “You'll be interested in knowing she, too is a little girl. It seems someone has a thing for killing guys with red hair.”

“Hey, what's that supposed to mean?!” Zelos exclaimed. “Still, it's kinda strange about the two guys who were killed. According to what we just learned, they both have the same name.”

“Come again?” Phoenix asked in surprise. Edgeworth presented him a pair or Autopsy Reports:

Victim 1: Luke Fon Fabre

Victim 2: Luke Fon Fabre

“It seems the two were twins.” Edgeworth explained as Phoenix stared in shock.

“That's---that's---?!” Phoenix stuttered. :wtf:

“Impossible, I know.” Edgeworth finished for him. “Unfortunately, there's a pair of bodies at the morgue that say otherwise.”

---

That's the end of this trial. I'm going continue this under the same name but obviously, the suspect and victims are different now. Franziska and a few other Tales Characters make an appearance next chapter so sit tight!
