Title: Exegesis
Author: Me.
Rating: PG-13
Genre: AU, General
Summary: In a world were the heteromorphic Genos are persecuted for their differences, there is little sanctuary for those who wish to live in peace. Phoenix Wright is one such Geon, whether he knows it or not.

A/N: This smells strongly of X-Men. I KNOW.

---

Phoenix shifted slightly on his perch, on his lap rested a small book, his hands leafing through it idly, his cobalt eyes not quite reaching the paper. Instead, his orbs were more situated on the window close by to him, his mind on the clouds as they floated above and formed all sorts of bizarre silhouettes, watching each one with such intent that was barely given away by his unperturbed state.

Phoenix Wright was a young boy of ten years, and for all the world looked just like a normal boy of ten years. He was still a scrawny little thing; his clothes hung to him like bags although they were probably the smallest size available. There was nothing obviously unusual about him, other than his incredibly spiky jet-black hair.

His expression quickly changed from his previously tranquil state as his eyes turned to his earthly location, their almost dreamy appearance lost to a more rooted and focused one. He shifted again on his wooden roost, so that he was no longer facing the world outside. This room was like as not to serve as his new lodgings, and although it was certainly larger and more accommodating than his bedroom back home, it missed the warmth of his old room.

He had not yet fully examined his new surroundings, as when he first arrived it had been nearly the dead of night and he had gone right to sleep, leaving little time for him to look around.

Now he saw that the room was much bigger than he had originally thought, although it was not spacious the ceiling did go up fairly high, even from his perch, which was already several feet off the ground. The ceiling in question was bleach white, as were all of the walls. The floor on the other hand was probably some form of metal, although some kind person had been thoughtful enough to put a carpet in. A single bed, the one he had slept in of course, was placed almost obscurely in a corner. The only other piece of furniture present in the room was a medium sized dresser, several photographs resting in their frames on the dresser’s mantle.

His observations were cut short as he heard conversation from beyond his door. Even though his hearing was particularly fine, years of doing more listening than talking tends to do that to a child, he could not make out the muffled noises coming from outside his room. Curious, the boy lowered himself to the floor, and pressed his ear against the door.

“…Yes, he’s the new one, Mr. Gant.” It sounded like a woman speaking, polite and very matter-of-fact. There was a laugh too, someone else Phoenix judged to be an older man, followed by brief but loud clapping.

“Good, good, I trust everything’s in order?”

The boy had no time to listen further. Almost immediately after the man spoke, the door swung wide-open, catching Phoenix completely off guard. He had managed to almost completely avoid the door being slammed into his face, but had accidentally fallen down in his surprise.

Instead of a door there was now a man standing in front of him, a large and grandiose fellow who just seemed to breathe joviality. Phoenix was awestruck by this odd man, decked in a vibrant orange suit, his graying hairstyle in an almost mohawk. Emerald-green eyes stared down at him from the man’s purple shaded glasses, hard and almost accusatory.

But as surprised as Phoenix might have been, just as so was Damon Gant. When they had taken this boy in, he was almost half-dead, and yet here the spiky haired boy stood, or better said, sat, looking as though he had just woken up from a light nap. Such a thing was not unusual at all for this facility, but for someone so young and undeveloped, especially one who had barely yet begun to show the signs of a Genos, such an event was rare.

Kneeling down, so that he was almost level with the boy on the floor, Gant smiled widely, his eyes crinkling until almost shut. The two of them just stayed like that, almost for a minute, the strange man just smiling and the spiky boy just staring.

And then Gant laughed.

He had the most peculiar laugh that Phoenix had ever heard, like something out of a Christmas special but much warmer and much more natural. His shoulders loosened from their previous tenseness, and the boy let out a breath he didn’t know he was holding.

“Let this be a lesson then, Wrighto my boy! Never stand next to doors to closely!”

Phoenix cocked his head to the side. “Umm… shouldn’t that be something like…” the boy cupped his hand under his chin as he sought for the right thing to say. “Don’t listen to other people’s conversations, or something?”

The man only laughed harder, clapping his hands, and Phoenix couldn’t help but join in a little. “Yes, yes, you are quite right my boy! Quite right indeed!” He winked at the boy broadly. “Although, where you are, such things are encouraged!”

Turning, Gant waved to the woman he was talking to before, dismissing her. “You may go now, Mrs. Skye. Do say hi to Little-Lana for me?” The woman nodded, leaving before Phoenix could get a good look at her.

“Now, Wrighto.” Gant pulled a box from where it was nestled in between his armpit and his chest. “You’re mother sent this to you, she said you love puzzles.”

“My mother?” Phoenix tentatively accepted the box from the man, looking at it curiously. “My mother sent this?”

Sensing confliction in the boy, Gant nodded, speaking gently as he spread the pieces out on the floor, “Yes, I believe your mother loves you very much, Phoenix.”

The boy flinched, almost unnoticeably. Gant stood, up, studying the boy for one last moment before turning to leave.

“Umm... Mister Gant?”

The man turned at the boy’s voice, the young child looked confused as he sorted through the pieces of the puzzle. “Yes, Wrighto, my boy?”

Phoenix turned his gaze from the jigsaw. “I think there’s a piece missing.” Gant stood for a long moment, a pause hanging in the air as he examined the boy more intently.

“You think so? How do you know?” The man’s voice was slow and hard, a complete 180 from before.

Phoenix shook his head. “I -I just… feel it.” He shook his head more vigorously. “I just… I just know.”

Gant paused again, for the second time in the past few minutes. “Well, the only way to be sure is to try and finish what you have then, would it not?” With that, Damon Gant closed the door of Phoenix’s room, but not before he saw the boy begin to put the puzzle together.

Leaning against the entrance’s metal frame, Gant smiled at nothing in particular and everything in particular, opening his leather-gloved hand, a single puzzle piece resting flat on his palm.
