Detective Work
<show picture of PW watching a television set>
Television (news broadcast): "The body of lieutenant Vincent Hethrel was found in the central
military building. He was apparently impaled by a spear of metal erupting from the floor.
Edward Elric is being suspected of using alchemy to kill him; his trial is on Monday."
Phoenix: "Alchemy...are we supposed to believe in such a thing?"
Maya: "Hey Nick, whatcha watching?"
Phoenix: "A news broadcast. Apparently a short boy killed a man using...alchemy...?"
Maya: "Does he have a defense attorney?"
Phoenix: "Probably not, they only just arrested him. Are you saying I should take his case?"
Maya: "Sure! I myself can't believe a little kid would commit a crime like that."
Phoenix: "Well it does sound interesting. I guess I'll take it."
<location fades and switches to the detention center>
Edward: "Sir! Thanks for taking my case!"
Phoenix: "So, you're the defendant, Edward Elric?"
Edward: "Yup! State alchemist, and semi-loyal to the state!"
Phoenix: "..."
Edward: "...what is it?"
Phoenix: "It's just, I don't even know what alchemy is."
Edward: "Oh, it's simple. You really only need to know the basics to figure out this case. Basically,
you draw a circle with different markings on it. It then transfers substances into a different
shape or mixture."
Phoenix: "Whoa! So, you actually transform matter?!"
Edward: "Yup!"
Phoenix: "So, explain to me why you're being suspected."
Edward: "Okay. You see, they found the circle that impaled Vincent pretty quickly. It was drawn on a
window curtain in the same hallwa-"
Phoenix: "-but anyone could have drawn it! Even me!"
Edward: "Let me finish. Anyway, they found that it was drawn by an orange marker. They searched, and
they found the marker in a vacant room nearby. It...had my fingerprints on it..."
Phoenix: "I see how everything points to you..." "..."
Edward: "...?"
Phoenix: "Why do you know so much about the police investigation?"
Edward: "Oh that! I was just talking to Detective Gumshoe. He's pretty nice, but I still don't know what
side he's on..."
Phoenix: (I guess I should do my investigation for the time being)
<player gets choice to move to location "Central Military Building">
<Player moves there and meets Dick Gumshoe>
Phoenix: (so this is the building that the crime was in...wait a second, where's Maya?)
(come to think of it, she wasn't with me when I was talking to that blonde kid...)
Maya: "Oh hey Nick!"
Phoenix: "Maya? Where've you been?"
Maya: "Oh...I met up with Gumshoe as he was leaving the detention center. He offered for me
to help him with the investigation!"
Phoenix: "Maya! You're supposed to help ME with the investigation!"
Maya: "...oh right..."
Gumshoe: "Hey, Wright!"
Phoenix: "Oh, hey Gumshoe. Are you here to throw some evidence in my face?"
Gumshoe: "Sure am! ...wait, you meant that negatively. Anyway, I have some that may help..."
Phoenix: "Really?"
Gumshoe: "Well, only one piece. This is a map of the hallway section in which the crime occured."
<Hallway Map obtained> (image looks like this) D represents the crime scene

Phoenix: "Umm...how does this help?"
Gumshoe: "...but Wright! You're good with maps!"
Phoenix: "...but so is Edgeworth."
Gumshoe: "Oh right, sorry."
<you now get to move inside, to the location "Crime Scene"
<player moves there>
<Crime scene depicts a sprouting, metal coil hitting the ceiling. There is blood all over the impact
area. The man has been removed. If you press the left arrow at the bottom of the screen, you move further
down the hallway (downwards from D on the map) to a window that has the circle drawn on it.)
Phoenix: "Whoa. This is ugly. Before now, I had no idea people could just manipulate the environment like this."
Maya: "Th-th-this is freaking me out, Nick. I feel like someone will jump out at any second."
Phoenix: "Oh come on, Maya. This place isn't haunted, it's the scene of a murder. There aren't any ghos-"
<Alphonse (suit of armor) jumps out in front of them>
Alphonse: "Hey there!"
Maya: "EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEKKKKKK!"
Phoenix: "AHH! It's a talking suit of armor!"
Alphonse: "No! No! I'm not a ghost! I'm the brother of the suspect! I'm Alphonse Elric!"
Maya: "Still..."
Phoenix: "Don't worry Maya, it's just his brother wearing a suit of armor."
Alphonse: "..."
Phoenix: "What is it?"
Alphonse: "...nothing."
<psyche lock appears - 5 locks>
Phoenix: (a psyche lock!)
Maya: "Phoenix, did you see that?"
Phoenix: "Yeah! Although, I don't think I can break it. I have nothing on this guy."
Maya: "I guess."
Phoenix: "So what are you doing here?"
Alphonse: "Oh, I'm trying to find evidence for my brother's case."
Phoenix: "Same here."
Alphonse: "Wait, so YOU'RE Miles Edgeworth? If you're prosecuting my brother, you're definitely confus-"
Phoenix: "No, no, I'm defending him."
Alphonse: "Ah! I knew you were a good person!"
Phoenix: (Is he calling Edgeworth evil?)
Alphonse: "Still, I know my brother is innocent! He would never kill anyone unless they were someone
who deserved to die!"
Phoenix: "Well, that is his job, working for the military."
Alphonse: "So, have you found anything? Any 'case breakers'?"
Phoenix: "No, we only just got on this investigation."
Alphonse: "...ah! GET A MOVE ON! BROTHER'S IN TROUBLE!"
Maya: "Hey! Hey! Stop hitting us!"
<hitting stops>
Phoenix: "Okay, let's take a look around."
<EXAMINING OPTIONS>
---------------------
---------------------
Metal Mass (weapon of murder)
-----------------------------
Maya: "This is incredible! Bending metal with your mind! All you have to do is draw a funky circle!"
Phoenix: "I know. It seems sort-of...dangerous. Well, at least after seeing this."
Maya: "Wait, if this is a work of TRANSFORMING metal, then where did the killer take the metal from?"
Alphonse: "Oh! I can help you there. There's a boiler room in the basement below us. It helps heat the building."
Phoenix: (Well, if metal was taken from there, it must have left a mark down there. We should probably take a look.)
<player obtains location of boiler room>
Blood
-------
Maya: "This...is gruesome."
Phoenix: "Well, if you feel that way, then be glad you didn't see the crime happen."
Maya: "Yeah...wait! Nick! We would be MUCH better off if we had seen the crime happen!"
Phoenix: "Haha."
Caution Stripes (on the floor, hallway blocked off)
--------------------------------------------------
Maya: "Is this it?"
Phoenix: "...?"
Maya: "You'd think there'd be more than these stupid markings!"
Phoenix: "What do you mean?"
Maya: "Anyone could just come in here and tamper with the crime scene!"
Phoenix: "Wh-wha-WHAAA! You're right!"
<caution stripes added to court record (recorded fact that anyone could just walk over them)
Transmutation Circle
---------------------
Maya: "So this is all that did it? Some drawing?"
Phoenix: "It seems so, since everyone takes this so seriously."
Maya: "Wow...!"
Phoenix: "We should probably put this in the court record."
<Suspect Circle added to the court record>
-------------------------------------------------------------------
<BOILER ROOM>
<the room depicts several boilers with steam coming out of them, one boiler is blocked off, however,
as it has been bent to break through the ceiling>
Maya: "People still use these to heat buildings?"
Phoenix: "I guess so. I guess old practices never really leave us."
Maya: "Hmm...is anyone here?"
Phoenix: "Well, it's still steaming, so there might be-"
Maya: "HEEELLLLLLLOOOOOOOOO?!"
Phoenix: "Quiet down, Maya!"
Maya: "Sorry."
Phoenix: "And don't touch any of these boilers. They're really hot."
<EXAMINING OPTIONS>
--------------------
--------------------
Any Regular Boiler
------------------
Phoenix: "This room is up and running, isn't it?"
Maya: "I guess so. When that guy said 'boiler room' I thought he meant an abandoned one."
Phoenix: "Let me feel the metal on this..."
Maya: "Nick! And right after you told me not to touch anything!"
The Deformed Boiler
-------------------
Phoenix: "So the alchemist in question took the metal from this, and stabbed the victim, right?"
Maya: "I guess so."
Phoenix: "...!"
Maya: "Huh?"
Phoenix: "This must mean that the criminal had been in the boiler room before commiting the crime!"
Maya: "Hey! You're right! They must need to know where the substance is, before they use it right?"
<"Deformed Boiler" added to the court record>
Phoenix: "I'm going to feel around it for a bit. Maybe some small detail could reveal something."
???: "I seriously doubt that."
Maya: "...? Hey!"
Edgeworth: "Long time no see, Wright."
Phoenix: "YOU'RE prosecuting this case?"
Edgeworth: "Of course! As soon as I saw the details, I knew it would be an easy win."
Phoenix: (That's all? An easy win?)
<you can now talk to Miles Edgeworth>
<TALK OPTIONS>
---------------
---------------
The Murder
----------
Phoenix: "So, you're the prosecutor. You must know something about this."
Edgeworth: "I can't believe I'm saying this, but I really don't know much about this."
Phoenix: "But you're always an expert on the case before you even get to the scene of the crime!"
Edgeworth: "It's just, I don't know about alchemy, except for what Gumshoe told me."
Phoenix: (It sounds like Edgeworth is as confused as I am)
Edgeworth: "Still, I do know something."
Phoenix: "What's that?"
Edgeworth: "The killer vanished right after the crime."
Phoenix: "...!"
Maya: "WHAT?!"
Edgeworth: "Indeed. You see, the murderer-
Phoenix: *glare*
Edgeworth: *sigh* "-suspect walked down the hallway from left to right at the top of the map."
Edgeworth: "He then went down the hallway on the left going down."
Edgeworth: "He then commenced with killing the man, and then just disappeared."
Phoenix: "Why couldn't you find him?"
Edgeworth: "There were several men talking in the horizontal hallway at the bottom. There were also several at the top."
Edgeworth: "Everyone heard the victim scream when he was killed, so they would have been on the lookout, it's military instinct."
Phoenix: "So, what happened?"
Edgeworth: "The suspect vanished, so no one saw him run away or even commit the crime."
Phoenix: "That sounds like an advantage to me."
Edgeworth: "Hardly. We suspect that he used alchemy to make his escape. Possibly by transmuting the floor or wall to let himself out,
Edgeowrth: "- and transmuting it back the way it was once he was through."
Phoenix: "Grrrrrr...this is frustrating. I miss normal murders without super powers like this."
The Court Trial
---------------
Phoenix: "So, what are the procedings going to be for this...special case?"
Edgeworth: "Well, first we're going to call Lieutenant Hawkeye to the stand."
Phoenix: "What's her importance?"
Edgeworth: "Since the jury and judge are not familiar with alchemy, she's going to explain it as a non-alchemist."
Phoenix: "That makes sense, but she has to have a coorelation with the case, right?"
Edgeworth: "She does. She was in the horizontal hallway at the top of the map. She was talking to a couple lower class soldiers."
Phoenix: "Is she here in the building?"
Edgeworth: "I'm afraid not, Wright. She left after I talked to her about the case."
Phoenix: "Gaah..." (This is so unfair.)
<Lieutenant Hawkeye added to talk options>
Lieutenant Hawkeye
----------------
Phoenix: "So, what kind of person is this lieutenant?"
Edgeworth: "The best. There's finally an honest person in our case. I love working with the military. If they're unhonest, they're obviously part of the crime."
Phoenix: (gosh I hope this Edward kid is honest in his testimony)
Edgeworth: "...plus she doesn't side with anyone. Thank god."
Phoenix: "She sounds like your type."
Edgeworth: "Shut up, Wright."
