"I felt like destroying something beautiful."
-FIGHT CLUB

In his dark cell, Daryan stirred in his sleep. Dimly, he heard someone calling, a voice so familiar he hears it and hates it even in his sleep. It was just like they were back to the way they were…everything came back in a rush, the laughter, the music…

…but it can be no more.

He unwillingly opened his eyes and adjusted to the darkness, he had heard his name. and even before he knew it, he had called out the name which the voice was dimly associated with.

“…Gavin?”

“…You’re half correct.” The voice echoed in the empty hallways. “Only half, young Daryan.”

“You are…?” Daryan sat up slowly, now that his senses are coming back, he could tell that the voice had its distinct differences.

“I’m the other Gavin.” There was a slight tone of bitter sarcasm mixed in with the genuine-sounding laugh.

“I have heard Klavier talk about you…Kr…Kristoph, is it?”

“I see he did not completely forget to mention his only remaining family to his friends.”

There was so many questions going through Daryan’s head, one of them being how did the famous defense lawyer end up in a hopeless place like this. And the other… “…Why did you suddenly start talking to me? You have been here next to me for seven months now, and…”

“…Ah, I see you have gotten to an important point.” Back in his cell, Kristoph took a book off the shelf, fingered through its pages for a while, the placed it back. “…And why, even though I do have a brother, am I just as alone as you are?”

“…so…?”

“Did it ever occur to you that should my brother have nothing to do with putting me in here, Daryan, that he’d come to visit?”

“You don’t mean…?!” Daryan sat up straight, listening intently. There had never been much love between him and Klavier, though he had always held, for Klavier, the respect a musician deserved. When the trial came to a point where he became the defendant, Daryan did not expect Klavier to stand up for him, nor did he expect what Klavier did, which resembled nothing short of cold-blooded betrayal. But… “…he…put you…I mean, he would betray his own brother…?”

Maybe it was fortunate that their cells were right next to each other so Daryan could not have seen Kristoph’s face, for as sad as Kristoph sounded, his faced held a slight smile. “Ah, betrayed, such a strong word. But I ask you, how can there be betrayal, when there was not much love to begin with?”

Daryan was startled. Kristoph had addressed the one thing that was on his mind…How can this be considered a betrayal of trust if the trust wasn’t there in the first place? Sometimes Daryan doesn’t know what to make of Klavier anymore, it was beyond confusing, what was going on inside that young musician’s mind.

Kristoph took the silence to be confirmation and continued. “But you felt as if it was a betrayal, even though there was never much trust from Klavier to you…maybe you can explain to me why that is.”

“…I…”

“…don’t hesitate, Daryan, you know it. Maybe it’s because…even though he had never trusted you much, you had always held a deep place for him within your heart…?”

Daryan didn’t reply.

Kristoph felt like laughing. He knew his way with the younger generation by being around Klavier for too long. What happened in court was beyond his control because it was in broad daylight and he wasn’t expecting that kind of a situation to occur, however, in here, it’s different.

“I feel your pain, Daryan, and to think, I am his brother…”

“…that bastard…” Daryan swayed to Kristoph’s words like snake to its charmer, hanging onto every note in search of an excuse for his crime. Yes…it was all Klavier’s fault. Klavier hurt him, Klavier betrayed HIS trust.

“…if only he had held silent, if only he had acted as a friend…see, if it was only with you, then he might have made one mistake, or even was standing on justice’s side, but I am his brother…and yet…”

“…it’s all because of him!”

Kristoph silently unscrewed his own bottle of nail polish, and twisted the thumb of the glass hand on top of the bottle. Without a sound, a secret compartment popped open by the palm, revealing a tiny bottle of liquid swirling in the blue light filtered through the glass hand. Kristoph admired its beautiful colors for a second, then stood back, and sighed. “Daryan, do you happen to have any interesting books? I ran out of things to read. My brother used to tell me you have a habit of licking your fingers to flip pages when the pages are difficult to move…which means you do read, don’t you?”

“I only have some magazines.”

“Any you’d be willing to share?”

Daryan randomly selected a book and stuck it out from the left side of the bars of his jail, which Krissi took, while wearing gloves. “Had Klavier ever come to visit you while you were in jail?” Kristoph asked casually as he opened to a page, and gently dabbed some nail polish to its left corner. Then, he flipped it over to the right, and dabbed some of the strange liquid in the right cornet.

“…No.” Came Daryan’s disgruntled voice.

“I’m terribly sorry my brother can be such an ass…I must have done something wrong.”

“No it’s not your fault, Mr.Gavin…it’s…god, Klavier’s just so…”

Kristoph slipped the magazine back and took off his gloves. “It seems that pop culture is just not my area anymore, this is so confusing. Listen, Daryan…how would you like to…leave this place?”

“…Mr.Gavin, is that possible?! I have life without parole, also I…”

“I didn’t say by proper means. I am aging, already 32…but you are still young, your life is still ahead of you. I must say, there is a personal gain for me…I have a favor to ask of you, I happen to have with me a metal file which can get you out by the window, and the rest is up to you.”

“…But Mr.Gavin…”

“…I must ask, is there anything to lose, Daryan?”

“…no, but the chances are…”

“I will bribe the security to be lax around the windows…the rest is up to you.”

“Why are you doing this, Mr.Ga…Kristoph?” Daryan sat onto his bed and looked at the wall suspiciously, as if he could see Kristoph’s face. Maybe it was a good thing he couldn’t.

“I feel as if I must somewhat pay for my brother’s damage to you, young Daryan. You were a talented musician, you have such a life in front of you…so be free. I have come to regret my ways, but it is too late for me…but not for you.”

“…and what would the favor be, Kristoph?”

“There is a reward for you too. Take the magazine I just took, and one day I will reveal to you a great reward hidden within it. Now, listen to me carefully…” Kristoph sank into his soft armchair and began to do his nails. It just occurred to him how many nights it had been since he last took care of his hands.

His hands, which could once again, took back everything he had lost.

And destroy everything that made him lose.

Do not forgive…and definitely, do not forget. Kristoph murmurred to himself silently.
