Chapter One.As the aeroplane touched down, Ema was filled with excitement. She was, for once, completely sure about her future. Almost all her life she had wanted to be a forensics scientist, but she had never been sure she would make it... Wasn't sure she had the skills her sister did. But today... She had a good feeling about today. She stepped out of the plane, welcomed eagerly by... no-one at all. Ema's heart squelched a little. She had told her sister the plane would be back today... But after coming out of prison, Lana had become a prosecutor again. But with her record, the force were reluctant to let her back... And when they finally did, she started at the bottom. Perhaps she had a trial today. That's what Ema told herself. She waited at the luggage area, keeping an eye out for her pink suitcases... the same shade as her glasses. Propping them onto her head, the world tinted pink for her, a problem became aparent. Putting the glasses on top of her head and frowning, she made out the security man heading slowly towards her... Slowly, because he was lugging Ema's many, many, suitcases behind him.
"Excuse me, ma'am..." he said. "Are you a Ms, uh, Ema Skye?"
Yes, you dork. "Yes, you- um, ahem. Yes, I am Ema Skye. Is there a problem?"
"Well, there seems to be a certain amount of - shall we say - illegal substances of a chemical and biological nature in your, um, luggage. Substances that could be disadvantegeous to human health. Come through here, miss... The manager wants to speak to you."
"W-What? But I'm a scientist, I
need those..." her voice trailed away as she followed the security guard into the manager's office.
"Why, hello there. Are you the person who's been causing so much panic down at security? I was expecting someone a little more... Um, never mind."
Ema's glare was drilling holes into his head.
"Well, anyway, we can't let you back into the country with this stuff... But if you agree to leave it behind, maybe we can cut you a deal. But first we need to know some details. Where is your place of residence, for example?"
"Um..." Ema hadn't thought of that. She'd been hoping to live with Lana until she could organize a home of her own. "I was planning on staying with a relative... Lana Skye."
"Okay... So you don't officially live in this country. Do you have a visa?"
"No, I'm an American citizen... I've been out of the country for nine years."
"Do you have any proof of that?"
"No, but I can tell you my details."
"Hmm... that's not very secure. You'll have to stay here for a while... Til we sort things out."
He motioned to the security guard who stood up, and escorted Ema out of the room. "You'll have to stay in the departure area, miss." he said. "We don't have any accomodation here at the airport... But feel free to use the facilities."
After the security guard left, Ema sat down on a seat. She'd had such a good feeling about today... But her rotten luck had got the better of her. Still, there were some things worth waiting for. But at that moment, Ema couldn't wait, and she sat on the seat, in the empty departure area... And she cried.
