Pretty sure I've seen threads for less, so I'll shamelessly make it.

I've recently tried to learn how to make minor edits.
I started with simple recolouring (which I still messed up for reasons I'll explain later). Then proceeded to very minor editing. Extra button here, extra cuff there.
Finally, how do I actually animate it? You can see my initial endeavour here, but I've since learnt a way to do it thanks to a charitable member.
http://www.forums.court-records.net/vie ... 3#p1316093

Spoiler: Hard Learnt Lessons
Lesson 1 - MS Paint Cannot Save in .gif Format
My first ever edit/recolour. I actually spent a bit of time on it. Imagine my surprise when after I had finally saved it, feeling proud of myself, I noticed that it became of horrendous quality. A quick search showed me why, and I swore to never again commit the same mistake. Saved the images in .png instead.

Lesson 2 - MS Paint can do Bad Things to Your Colours
Having saved my first edit in .png format, I started copying and pasting it all over the place in order to maintain the same style/colour on the following poses. I made what I believe amounts to 7 or 8 edits, when I noticed something was slightly off...
The colours! They changed from the originals!
Turns out, copying and pasting things in Paint can go wrong, since Paint tries to keep the colour scheme, or whatever it's called, to 256 colours, meaning that when I copy the completely recoloured Pose A into the separate page for Pose B, which I plan to edit next, the colours in the copy&pasted Pose A are changed to their most approximate ones within the 256 colour scheme, assuming there's colours outside of it. I coloured things incorrectly 7 times before I noticed, which means I had to redo 7 sprites...

I researched the problem. Turns out the only way to copy and paste without messing up the colours is to save in .bmp format, and it has to be "24 bit" something.

Lesson 3 - Sprite Making Requires Patience
I cannot count the number of mistakes I've made in the colouring or stuff I missed as I hurried along. Everytime I thought I was nearly done, something went wrong. Either I finished my hard, hard work of animating a sprite only to notice one of the frames was off, or maybe I suddenly noticed that the colouring I thought I had fixed from Lesson 2's effects is actually still wrong, and Edgeworth's hair has lost its sparkle and become more faded (veracity of this statement cannot be confirm- who am I kidding. I just noticed the hair on all my sprites is wrong and I can't be bothered to fix it).

Lesson 4 - Breaks are Useful
In other words, every time I came back from ragequitting I things seemed to go much smoother than when I quit. I can only imagine my exausted/saturated self failed to spot simple solutions to the problems I was facing. A clear mind is always best.

First two days spriting. Goshdarn, there's only so much punishment I can take.

Actual "Sprites"

Updated 04/08/2015
Spoiler: AAI Edgeworth dressed as DD Edgeworth
Confident:ImageImageImage

This sprite taught me that the silky smooth shading of the sprites in AAI comes from actual work. After cursing at it repeatedly, I pretty much destroyed half the existing shading in my version.
Simply put, shading with more than 3 colours is far, far too much for me.

It took me 3 gifs to get the talking sprite right, but it should be fine now.

Determined:Image

My perceptive eye believes that the cuffs should not be visible in this image. Awaiting feedback. Additionally, how the bloody hell is one supposed to draw glasses? It's fine if it's a couple of black pixels, but this?

Disclaimer: The idea of animating Edgeworth in his DD clothes came from Sligneris (They can be found here, in the Miles Edgeworth section - DD styled prosecutor sprites). I have been unable to contact him and until then I'll keep all the sprites directly based on his in private. I have chosen to share this one since I didn't copy anything from his original sprites beyond the idea, which I hope would not be considered theft in this situation.
Apologies if I take anyone else's work as my own, that is, by no means my intention.

You might wonder... For whatever reason would I come upon the idea of making this sprite (with an uncanny resemblance to Viola, no less!)?
Well, that has an explanation too.
Yesterday I watched The Incredibles™, and I really wanted to do a character who would have one of her eyes covered.
My initial undertaking was attempting to modify Adrian Andrews to fit the bill.
That, I dare say, did not go well. Somehow, two aberrations appeared instead, lord knows how:

I thought to myself... I need someone whose hair is simple, so I can edit it easily. And so I opted for Viola OC nº1 (Violini Cadavera).
(Note: The removed bandages were done by me. I am aware there already exists some made by another member, but I didn't base myself on those.)

:sparkly-maggey: DD Edgey in AAI! Nice work!
Also those lessons you mentioned. No.3 is something I'm surprised not many people realise from the get-go. Nothing can ever be better rushed than if you're patient :basil:
Good luck with your future spriting endeavours! :butzthumbs:

Since a pair of blinking eyes don't make for a very interesting sprite, here's a pair of blinking eyes and a moving mouth!
Spoiler:
Image Original/Simplified version
Image Truer to the AAI sprite

Making it talk showed me the complexion of the originals. There's a ridiculous amount of frames just to make him talk in the AAI one, but I think my simplified version does the job well enough :maya-thought:
(Except one of the frames breaks his jaw and there's a couple of pixels which change on his hair. It's painful just looking at it.).

Oh yes, my abilities to load up MS Paint and spam the "Fill with colour" option are beyond belief.
Allow me to bestow upon you my knowledge:
Spoiler: Totally Serious and Comprehensive Tutorial
Step 1:
Pick up the original image.
http://i.imgur.com/2RTRZOP.png
Step 2:
Open it in MS Paint and select a colour. Preferably a rational one, though it's up to you. Then recolour the various parts of his suit with this in mind.
Step 3:
Ragequit when you notice the shading in his sprite and how it'd take ages to replace it all. Not that you know what to replace it with.
http://i.imgur.com/WcpEpzu.png
Step 4:
Prevail and just replace everything with a darker tone of the lighter part, or maybe a lighter tone of the darker part.
Of course, by hand. Every single pixel.
Yeah you're not going to do them all. Neither am I.
Step 5:
Replace nearly all of them with different tones of your chosen colours basing yourself off the shading already existing made by professionals. Finally, look at your completed sprite and choose an incredibly obnoxious colour for the buttons, just to ruin your work.
Voilà: http://i.imgur.com/f5b2QxS.png

Step 6 (Optional):
Realize you've spent over and hour spriting that thing for no reason other than to make a practical joke.

That's it for colouring. Now for edits.
Spoiler: A look inside an artist's mind
Image

EDIT:
And here's the thing you've all been waiting for!
When someone thinks about Edgeworth's confident pose, the first thing that comes to mind, is, THAT shrug. Pretty much Edgeworth's trademark, it is perfection. And here, in an effort to ruin said perfection, I've remade the shrug in his DD Clothing.
Spoiler: Warning - Perfection Nowhere to be Found

It's probably just a rectangle-drawn trick or something drawn on Ms. Paint with extreme patience and gentleness. Tiagof, you should probably want to start using advanced photo-editing programs like, Paint.Net, Adobe Illustrator, etc... They're more great at spriting works! :phoenix:

Those Chief Prosecutor Edgeworth sprites look badass. Just made my day. :basil:

These are nice. Yeah, sprites are a lot of work XD I think it's paid off.

Try setting colour 1 as the colour you want to replace, colour 2 as the one you want to replace it with, then right-click over everything with the eraser tool :) Paint's better than a lot of people give credit lol

If you were wondering the reason why the official sprites have so much anti-aliasing and stuff is because they're painted with a brush tool and that adds the blurry-ness automatically.

I call slander! There were no tricks involved! A lot of stupidity, sure. A lot of wasting time, certainly. A lot of messing up? In spades. But I used no trickery beyond that which I've mentioned in the impeccable tutorial I wrote up there. :shoe:

As for using Sprite.net, maybe one day, when I feel like it. For now MS Paint is easy enough to use, so long as you know how to avoid all the carefully laid out traps.

Good lord! You're a hero! My time. Suddenly this is not as big of a black hole as previously.
Or maybe it's still the same... but more productive!

I can't believe it. I've only just started spriting and I've already enjoyed a lazy Sunday. How unbecoming of me.
This cannot be allowed. As recompense, here's the daily Edgeworth sprite, and a little bonus!

I like those DD Edgeworth AAI sprites, the simplified shading looks really good !
The Viola edits are fine but the expressions are too similar. That's because you only changed the mouth, so you should also try to edit the eye / eyebrow ^^

That's foul play. You're aiming for where it hurts!

I'll try... Maybe I'll manage something. (Like covering both eyes with hair. That one's genius!)
PS: But I'll have you know, I technically changed the eye for the surprised one!

No, I was purposely bickering about bugger all. I didn't actually think you meant anything bad. Pardon the pointless fuss.

As for the mysterious "Sprite.net", it is merely the product of a fleeting brain lapse. I can, thankfully, still read (although god knows how long that will last if I continue working with such minute pixels).

Edit: Here's some still in progress/placeholder material I'm working on, but I need sleep.

I'm not... entirely sure what the double posting rules are on this forum. But given how I've updated the thread, and how the entire world revolves around me, that must be enough, right?
Here's an updated version of Totally Not Viola. This time, after drinking way too much coffee! (Expect lots of head shifting, strange hand movements, and loads of eye blinking.)
Just don't mind the doodles that appear on her face every time I try to draw her a mouth or make her talk.

This does, regrettably, mean I didn't do my daily Edgeworth recolouring... Since I nearly had to sell my soul just for these minor edits.

Also, Viola OC nº1 is not yet over! Expect at least one more pose. And a terribly edited one at that!

Hey they look great bro! By the looks of it on the talking sprites the mouth is going Closed, Part open, Open. When in the official mouth movements for the AA games the mouths go Closed, Open, Part open, Open, Closed.

Nice work! I like the diverse poses and facial expression you could get out of Viola's alone!
One thing I saw in this pose:

Her waist sorta gets cut off.

You wanna know the best part? I knew that. I bloody knew that and still acted stubborn over it.

Her waist?
I'd understand if it were the shoulder? But I don't get the waist.
Since the very first frame has the arm covering it it's normal that the waist looks a wee bit different. (And apparently grew out to the left side as well, but we don't care about that :shoe:)
