Okay, so a while back, I was requested to make L as a detective or somthing like that.
My problem is the hair. I've spent at least a week trying to figure out, copypasting, starting from scratch, and either way I do it, it looks really bad.

So any tips I can use to make somthing like this?

Do you have photoshop? I'm not the best, but I could make a tutorial of sorts for you.

Its easier if you have a graphics program that uses layers, like photoshop or imageready. Heres a quick tutorial:

Spoiler: Tutorial
Step 1: Take the picture you want to use as a guide and resize it to PW proportions.
Image
Step 2: Create a new layer. Using a 1 pixel pencil, trace the outline of the hair (mines not too neat, 5 minute job!!).
Image
Step 3: Create another new layer, under the outline. Take the eyedropper tool and use it on the guide image to select the darkest shade of the hair.
Use this colour to block in the hair.
Image
Step 4: Now create another layer on top of this base colour. Again using the eyedropper, select the next darkest shade and block in those areas on this new layer.
Turn off the base layer so you can see the guide while doing this.
Image
Step 5: Repeat step 4 with the next shade, as many times as you want. The more shades you use, the more detailed it will look. Don't overdo it though. After about 4 or 5 shades you can't really tell the difference on a sprite this size!!

Of course theres all the clean up to do as well, but this should give you the general idea. :will:

EDIT: Oops, didn't see Spork's tutorial while posting this!!

Pro-tip: don't use paint.

You can do just fine with paint. It's less confusing, actually. All you have to worry about is 1 layer.

Layers can make spriting a whole bunch easier sometimes... epsecially if you're a doller.

But yes, there's nothing wrong with MSPaint at all for spriting.

I also only use one layer. Photoshop, etc. has a bunch of tools that make the job easier, and give you a higher quality result.

I still say photoshop really sucks for spriting. I never thought any of photoshops tools usefull, and it made all the basic tools that much more confusing to use.

Paint is the way to go, man. Other than that, do it like bomchu did.

I have a smiley tut here that might also be of use.
