I'm a total newbie when it comes to making costumes. I wanna go as either Normal!Franziska or a more goth/mistressy version of her that I call Dominatrix!Franziska. If I can't make/get help with her original design, I'll just buy the stuff for option two, but option one, to me, seems like the better choice to go with (Since I've never been to this particular con before, and I don't know how many people would recognize me as Franziska if I went with my Dominatrix!Franny idea.)

So, here I am, asking for advice from people who have cosplayed as her before/tutorials to look at/ideas as to where I can actually buy the fabric.... Wow, I fail big time. Also, any tips of finding/making her cuff links/buttons/brooch thing would be awesome. I have the boots and a crop from when I used to go horseback riding, so that shouldn't be a problem... though a whip would be preferred.

For the buttons you could try making them with clay, or some thick kind of paper, then painted and glossed. For the fabric, ask around for place to buy fabrics, or ask a tailor. The whip... dunno, dominatrix shops?? D: wait, maybe horse riding shops? Wait, do you need whips for horse riding? Argh, I fail at helping XP

Re: Dominatrix!Franziska. Do it.

For patterning, you can usually find a jacket somewhat similar to the one you want to make if you search through pattern catalogs (JoAnn's usually has a section dedicated to this), but altering patterns is an advanced technique. Maybe you will luck out and find a pattern for her jacket that is close enough. Her skirt is pretty standard, thankfully.

I'm not a cosplayer. Too much work involved. Especially when those things come to me for ideas.

Just a valid warning: Good luck getting this to work.

√ Good materials (Fit vs comfort)
√ Detail
√ Props
√ Props (Extras)
√ Makeup...?
? Body

That last one is usually what breaks this. I have only seen ONE good cosplay of :franny: and it was because the body matched the character design. If you want to cosplay :whip: then you should be ready to fit the character.

You probably see this as like the designer in Dethklok that starved his models because they wouldn't fit in the costumes. No. Opposite problem. You need to look the part or you just look like an out of place :maya: at best. Take a look at a few cosplayers making an attempt at this character and you'll see the small clues of what I'm saying. Sadly, it's not just luck but a mix of luck and a lot of work. :yuusaku:

Well, maybe people just want to have fun, you forget. You make a good point, but sometimes dressing up isn't about having the best costume. I'm a 5'0 tall stocky-built kid and I'm going as Edgeworth to a con. Does the costume look great? No, it's not convincing at all. Do people get who I am and have fun with it? Yes.

So that is a good note to mention if you're trying for a really convincing costume, but otherwise I think it's better just to be who you want and have fun.

No I'm not forgetting. Half of that fun for people seems to be the ability to be instantly recognized by who they're cosplaying. I tend to hear a lot of complaints as to how horrible the experience turns out because people can't get the costumes right. I don't see a problem with this focus. A lot of the time it isn't really the character that needs attention but the person. The reason I say that is most people don't seem to pay attention to detail when working on a character. Suddenly this switches around in a heartbeat. People pay rediculous attention to detail(like...Inhuman) when trying to ID the cosplayed character. So I bring it down to one idea: If you can make people say wow, you're doing something right.

This is probably the best thing you can do. At least you don't seem to complain.

Voice is like the best part. Picture this: Someone tries cosplaying as Payne(yeah I know, just bear with me). Everyone just sees a nerdy near-sighted bad haircut in a suit. Someone starts bugging him and asking him why he's not in costume. He lets off the most annoying-pitched "Objection!" anyone has ever heard. In an instant, everything that needed to be said had been explained with one simple word. :yuusaku:

I agree with this person. I'd love to cosplay Franny, but I'm fat and have a manly physique. X_X So I cosplay :hobohodo: . (I know, Nick's not fat, lol, but the baggy sweater covers it well. and I REFUSE to cosplay :chef:). Like you, I'm incredibly attentive to detail (I even switched the drawstring on my hood to a navy-blue one to fit the art).

In any case, I do NOT recommend using a riding crop. Franziska's whip is her entire trademark, and taking that away from her... is like beating a dog :larry: . and no one wants to see that, lol.
Believe it or not, my local Six Flags sells whips. XD So if you have a Six Flags in your area that you go to , you may want to look around. Make sure you try to find a light-tan coloured one, but if you can't, a black one would probably work just as well (I'm just picky, lol).

Also, keep in mind that her hair is grey-blue, and NOT just bright blue. I see Franziska cosplayers all the time with BLUE Hair, and it drives me crazy.

But most of all, have fun! Don't stress out too much about wether or not your costume is perfect, and even if you think you don't look like her at all, most people will recognize you instantly, anyway. I believe that a cosplay is always about 40% more accurate than the person wearing it likes to believe =) So just enjoy yourself.

I have to agree here. Still, there are a lot of ways to improvise...lol.

If it's close but won't quite work...Kitty ears and a tail. I think I saw one with a huge collar and bell. :shy:

I'm not really all that great on the middle half of the costume detail because the appearance is way too vague with the weird waistcoat :franny: has. I'll bet anything it's going to fit like a bride's dress. So ribs getting crushed into dust = good. :shy:

This is exactly what I'm talking about. You won't have a good eye for detail with your own work. Everyone else will though.

For the fabric...do you have any sewing stores nearby? I have a nice one not far from where I live that sells TONS of fabric, so a sewing store might be your best bet for that. Not sure about everything else, though I will say that from the pictures I've seen, a riding crop looks WAY shorter than Franziska's whip. Granted, hers is abnormally long, but a riding crop isn't really convincing at all. I believe someone earlier in the thread suggested going to Spencer's Gifts...they have a lot of BDSM-type stuff, so believe it or not, that might actually be the easiest place to go to find a whip (particularly if you don't care about it being the exact color).

I actually plan on cosplaying as Franzy once I learn to sew...the only problem with that is that I'm quite seriously nearsighted, so I have to wear glasses. Though I HAVE cosplayed without glasses before, it's a bit of a problem.

The only place I could find a decent-looking whip was Ebay.
And the one I got was so damaged that I had to spend hours with Mink Oil getting it to move and look like a whip again, so just a heads-up on that.

And I had to custom-dye a wig to get a good shade. The main wig shops (Cosworx and Amphigory) don't carry anything in a good color for Franzy. Personally I'd go with silver-gray over the bright blue that many cosplayers use.

I'm suprised nobody's found this yet. Go to Ebay and put this in the search:

Gyakuten Saiban Mei Karuma Cosplay Costume Custom M :ka-whip:

The price is reasonable and other sizes are avalable, but it's in Hong Kong. They have a few other costumes also :edgeworth: :karma: :minuki: :mia:

Ebay costumes are usually...pretty lack luster. They're made to be mass produced, so you're not getting the quality item that one could make on their own.

Whilst Dominatrix!Franzy sounds very sexy and all, be careful about doing it. A lot of Originally designed outfits are overlooked because people don't know who their cosplaying! I say go for her original outfit first~ But the choiuce is yours! Cosplay is supposed to be for fun.

As far as whips go, don't use a riding crop. It's really just not the same~ Try checking costume shops or even fetish stores for her whip! The internet is a valuable tool. Exploit it <3!

Fabric shouldn't be too hard, get some cotton twill at Joanne's...or even something at walmart! Though beware, if you buy at walmart you may never find the same fabric you bought the first time~

The wig will be the hardest monster to master. I suggest investing in some of Katie Bair's wig dye. A delicate mix of her cloud grey and powder blue should get a good franziska color.

Best of luck to you! I plan on playing Franziska at some point, so this is just the stuff I thought about already!

If you hit Anime Boston like that, you will be stalked by many, many fanboys. And probably lots of fangirls as well. Not like it's a bad thing.

...mmyes. *Alfred-Ashford-esque cackle*

Forgive me if that sounded incredibly creepy.

Edit - And apparently, I'm a medium-in-training now. Go me.

I'm surprised the original name wasn't posted for that long. It's definitely a keyword that helps here. =/

Remember that modifications or complete costume changes will work as long as the base identity of the character stays the same.

Example: Picture Phoenix in the maid outfit....Why are you still able to ID the character as Phoenix? :yuusaku:

How much does the identity change when you change the character? :shy:

For the whip, try Ebay. I got mine from there and it lasted quite the while.

Try looking for craft stores and the like for fabric, it's where I got the materials for my sleeves, plus the ribbon and the other bits and bobs.

Also, second hand shops are GREAT for bits and pieces to edit. :3

Hope I was of help.~

At cosplay.com, the same question about the whip came up. Indiana Jones is a popular costume this year, so any place that sells costumes should have them---even Wal*Mart. If you want a real one, a western wear/gear shop may have them. Real whips are banned from some cons, though, so be careful.

My Franziska cosplay is actually made from inexpensive clothes- a basic black vest, skirt, and white blouse that I am modifying to fit the character. I do not have the time or skill to make them on my own. The wig came from Cosworx.com. It's the "Angie N" style in Silver White. (I agree that silver looks better than the aqua that some cosplayers use.)
