So, I decided to make a topic about wigs.

Mostly because of this:

Cosplay and crossplay fall into the same category for me. It's not so much about who's doing the costume but rather if the costume is well done. Does the costume fit on the person? Did they get the smaller details? Do they have a wig (You'd be surprised how many who don't)?

How do you mean that? What's exactly wrong about not having a wig? Is it correctly that I assume that you mean that for cases when someones hair doesn't look like the character's at all?

I'm not entirely sure a whole new topic was necessary for this, buttttt~

Badfangirl and I are in the same cosplay group, so I can probably safely answer for her until she arrives to answer definitively, but I'm 99.9% certain that yes, she means in cases where a person's hair doesn't look like the character's at all. There's a lot of people out there who don't bother with wigs, even though hair can often make or break a costume, especially for a series like AA, where the outfits are often plain suits but the hair is what makes you stand out.

Good wigs are also really important, because if you only shell out $10 for a Party City wig, it's almost guaranteed to not look that nice. There's only ever been 1 or 2 exceptions to this rule that I've seen, but generally if you want a nice wig, you're going to be shelling out at least $25-30, and that's for a shorter wig. Longer wigs, depending on the length, will often go for more like $30-50. It seems expensive, but for a good quality, Kanekalon or Toyokalon fiber wig, it's well worth the price.

Note that this advice is generally reserved for the more serious cosplayers. I understand that a lot of people are just doing it for fun and aren't as into it or simply don't have the money (let's face it, it's an expensive hobby), but if you're really trying to look like a character, a good wig is important. Real hair can work in some cases (I've seen a lot of Mia cosplayers that look just fine with their real hair, for example), but at least in the case of really strange hairstyles (like say, Gant or Ron), a wig will typically look better, not to mention they save you having to style your hair every day of the con.

Thanks for that informative post.

How can I differ a good wig from a bad one? Only the price?

DarkenedWings knows me so well. What I mean when I say I look at the wigs is if the hair or wig looks like the character's hair. There is nothing wrong about not having a wig. I've heard many people discuss using their own hair for more casual characters like Mia, Gumshoe, Phoenix, etc. Hell I'd used my hair for Larry if it was the right length and color. I don't mind styling it every single time. Wigs are there to make life simpler. You don't have to style them as often and they come in so many lengths and colors.

You can tell a good wig from a bad one not only by price but what they are made of. Like DW mentioned earlier Kanekalon or Toyokalon fiber wig are good overall and well worth the money.

Good wigs will generally be more expensive. Price is a decent indicator, but the best indicator is what the wig is made from. As I said above, you'll want to look for wigs made from Kanekalon or Toyokalon fiber, which are high-quality wig fibers. Higher quality wigs won't be as "fuzzy", and won't tangle nearly as easily if you take good care of them. Not to mention they just look better than a $10 wig from Party City.

Some sellers I use fairly often are cosplaywig on eBay (though you have to watch out, their wigs tend to be thinner and so the wefts show if you have a big head or lots of hair) as well as Cosworx.com or Amphigory.com. Cosworx tends to ship faster, but both places are excellent.

*nod* I pretty much agree to this, although I've been surprised at some of the good wigs at the Halloween store for 20 bucks. But in general, sticking with a better wig is the way to go. Especially when you have to do a heavy amount of styling.

I also agree that wigs are amazing things. My hair is extremely straight and thin, and I really don't like it short. So I have the ability to cosplay near anyone I want with the right wig. :phoenix:

the ONLY time i have had a halloween store wig be ok for a character, Is when the characters hair was spiked and wasn't going to be moveing at all, thus making it imposable to tangle.
But then again they can be skimpy on hair and unusable for spiking
it all really depends on the wig.
Make damn sure you look over the wig you get. Make sure
1. It feels smooth and is made of a good fiber
2. it has enough hair to do what you want
3. if it has bangs or not ( that can make or brake a wig )

I think i have only ever used a halloween wig once for a spiked style
and i have a few laying around for extra hair
old and unused wigs are grate for cutting hair off and putting it in another wig

and always save your cut off hair
that can also be reused
some people say wigs don't grow back
i say they do if you have the time to sew in more hair

also when sewing in halloween store wig hair make sureyou use it on a wig your going to spike
or you might end up with a half fuzzy wig
