Hello, everyone. As you all know, I plan on going to Portcon Maine as Damon Gant. However, I am having problems with the wig.

First off, I do have both bobbypins and aquanet on hand, but I'm not sure how exactly to style it to match Gant's look. Can anyone help me out here?

Here's a picture of it on my mother's mannequin head named "Miss Kim":

I don't think hair gel is enough. you need lots of hairspray and hair wax..

I read it on a cosplay magazine that you can also use wire for support. It's usually used to create antenna effect, but I think you can also use it for the thunder effect.

How do you plan on doing Gant's gray streaks? Are you going to sew in some gray wefts or try to dye certain sections of the wig?

@yamineco: Hair... wax...? Also, I didn't think of the wire idea, but how would that work, exactly?

@Gwiffen: I did have worries about the streaks of gray and I have no clue about how I'm going to do it. Which do you prefer?

I'd say go with some gray wefts. The wig may start showing if you pull it back depending on how thick it is, so adding in some extra hair would help with that. It's also not as messy and less permanent than dyes so if you mess up you can try again. As for where to get them... um... I don't really know. You'd need something like an extension but in smaller sizes. I don't know if it's possible to cut up an extension and preserve its individual integrity. Probably depends on the extension.

Oh, I already know how it would work. I have hair extensions that I was going to use (in part) for the beard. I was told that those hair extensions can be dyed, so I can just dye some of them grey and weave them in the wig somehow. That should be alright for that.

The hair extensions are enough to give anyone a gavin drill, so I would have plenty for the beard and to weave into the wig.

Sharpies work wonders for dyeing wigs :godot:

I second the hairspray and hair dryer. Hair gel will not work because it uses the oils in real hair. Just take your time and constantly check a reference pic

Good luck :P

I didn't even think of using sharpies! We have a million of them at my house, so that'll definitely work.

Another reason I do not regret opening your fan club, KaZzu!

There's a sharpie-dye tutorial in this cosplay.com thread. It's the second post and quite thorough.

IMO, the easiest way to do sharpie-coloring is to just color it using the pen w/out breaking it open or anything weird like that. It's easy to do just while you're sitting there doing nothing or watching TV or whatever. Also, you just need streaks, so dying will probably be overkill. Just color in the spots you'd like.

Also, the tutorial says you need 5 sharpies - depends on the wig. I needed less than 2 for my Franziska wig. For Gant, you really will only need 1, probably.

Sharpies are great...they're just really time consuming and smelly if you're hand coloring xD
But yeah. I dyed a wig about that size with sharpie ink and rubbing alcohol and ONE regular sharpie. It's possible.
Er, but the rubbing alcohol is only if you're lazy and want to just drench the whole wig in the homemade dye XD
Just make sure you have lots and lots of newspaper, rubber gloves, clothes you don't want stained and what not, 'cause it's messy if you're a total klutz like meh... oh and XD I was going to post that one Gant cosplay on Cosplay.com...but I see you've already seen it :D
andywho. I'll shut up now, I don't think I'm helping very much D;

Yeah, that's why I want this Gant Wig to be a little more... perfect than those other Gant cosplayers. The one on cosplay.com, the spikes of the hair are supposed to be less spiky and more feathery. Also the lightning bolt-shaped curl was way too stretched out, which is why I will be using Bobbypins for that portion.

I second the hair wax idea. It seems good for a Gant.

As one who's seen several freaky Kakashi wigs, which is amusing similar to Gant's style, I would advise you to avoid using hair glue/wax until you've tried to style it with only hairspray first. Reason being that hair glue/gel has a tendency to make things look very stiff/greasy/fake. Hairspray holds everything while allowing it to still look like, well, hair. If you hair glue at all it should be for keeping tips of the spikes together, but I'd avoid that too as real pear don't have pointy clumps of hair.

Here's an example of what I mean, here's an Edgeworth wig I did for a friend

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v58/Mindela/eWig.jpg

It looks great on the form but looks really awkward on him (wish I had a pic from before it got dowsed) since

Good luck with the hairline/sideburns. If you're going to attempt those I recommend getting fake white mustaches/short beards from a costume store and cutting them to the right shape and then sewing them into the wig with clear thread

Sharpies really aren't that bad when compaired to working around bleach and hair color. My mannequin head is named Galinda while the topic is up. XD

Anyways my thought on the Gant wig was (since I am also planning it to do it at some point) to slick back the hair and make the lightning bolt bang from separate wefts/tracks. I figure it would be easier to style that way without having to worry about the fibers already on the wig being pulled in weird directions and exposing the lining beneath.
