I plan on going to Anime Expo '08 as Gumshoe. But I need a costume.

I need to know:

Where I can find a good trench coat.

I can pretty much figure out the rest on my own. Except for maybe the tie (is it red? or green? or brown? DARN MY COLORBLINDNESS)

The tie? I think it's reddish-brown... Sorry but I have no idea where to find the trenchcoat.

This is going to sound like a stupid idea and I am saying right now that I don't think it will work, but grab a brown trench coat (possibly a slightly lighter brown than normal, but not too bright) and get yourself some green dye. It might come out okay theoretically, but I am not sure of it myself. What should happen is that it should give the brown color of the coat a slight greenish tint which Gumshoe has.

Again, I have no idea if this will work, so you're better off getting a second opinion, but this is just my theory.

I might go with that, if all else fails. I'll look around for a trenchcoat. Big & Tall, hmm?

Or maybe a thrift store. Seriously, it'd be worth looking around.

Yeyup. Thrift stores are a cosplayer's best friend. Hit a few of them and you're bound to find a green trenchcoat eventually. You probably don't want to dye another trenchcoat though unless it's your last resort. Dyes are a messy business (especially on big clothes like a trenchcoat), and trying to dye brown to green may be tricky. If you do find a tan coat, you could go as GS3 Gumshoe perhaps.

Ebay?
Dunno if this trench coat is good enough/close enough, though.

That eBay is nice, IDK yet, though. I'll have to look around, first. (I remember that my brother had a trenchcoat that my mom dyed green, maybe he still has it?)

You could always get an olive tone trench coat. On the plus side, I live in one of those "Downtown Historical Fredericksburg" where they have a Corky's. Corkys is beast, maybe you have something like that near you? They always have that dead give away purple neon sign in the window:

From what I know, dyeing something that's not white is going to be pretty hard...

order it? or have it tailored?

As for the hair, I'm going to style it with my own hair. However, I have long hair right now. Like, to the bottom of my neck. I'm going to cut it, though. How short should I cut it? Also, how should I style it? Like the sprite, or a bit more realistic?

Like the sprite. Also, don't forget the bandage on his face, or the pencil in his ear.

For spiking stuff, you'll probably want the Got2B products. They work almost instantly and hold Final Fantasy-style spikes up indefinitely so I'm told but they'll leave your hands quite sticky too.

I recommend trying to style it before getting your hair cut, so you know whether it's too long. Better too long than too short; trust me, short hair is harder to style... in my opinion... I suck at styling hair, though! :gregory:

But for Gumshoe you could probably get away with normal spiking gel since his aren't that dramatic.

for the tie, a definate answer would be any department store in the mens section with all the shirts and ties.
get a ref pic for someone to help you find the correct color.

it might be expensive, but if all else fails?
