Does anyone here at CR take martial arts? I, for one, take karate (goju-ryu style if you're curious). Right now I'm an orange belt, and I'm going to test next month for a blue belt.

So, yeah. Who takes martial arts, and what kind? Also, what belt are you?

(P.S. I haven't seen a thread like this, so I made one. Sorry if this is a repeat!)

Jujutsu (if you were to break it down, I guess that would actually be considered Jujutsu, Kenjutsu, and Iaijutsu), and have taken in the long-run... Karate (kicked ass), capoeira (always loved dancing), and got a bit of a lesson in Muay Thai once.

I could of learnt Judo, but I chose not to. Besides, a good old slap & punch is how we Southerners handle ourselves if we ever needed to XD

I do have a friend who knows Kung Fu though.

My dad does that! XD

It looks hard. And you have to wear the face mask, boxing gloves, and other crap. And Dad is all punch, punch, kick, punch, kick, kick. Awesomeness!

No, I meant that Kung-fu is a blanket term. What does he specifically practice?

I'm afraid I'm not sure :s
He told me he knew Kung Fu, he showed me a couple of punches & kicks.
I don't know what he specifically does, he didn't tell me that.

I remember when my friends used to do martial arts I was so jealous of them...

But then again I wish I could've joined but I'm lazy so I wouldn't have done good.

And I can never do anything that requires physical strength right so yeah...

we (that being the girls, the guys didn't) actually got self-defense at school...it was utterly useless but very funny ^^' in the end the teacher was so desperate she went over to the guys and asked them to PLEASE attack us because every time we attacked each other it was more like a pathetic glomp and in stead of fighting it off, everyone just started laughing ^^' plus over half of the group wouldn't even be able to hold down a knocked out person, honestly ^^'

I got to practice on my brother at home though >.> <.<

I've tried to mimic video game character combat styles using a pool stick.

Does that count as martial arts?

Because I was always doing the same moves. And I always ended up sparring with a guy twice my size? XD Not-so-fun. I do miss it at times though. My mother just refuses to let me go because she knows how quickly I flit through things. Same reason I can't take music lessons.

Brazilian martial art, created by the African slaves to confront their masters.

Evolved over time to become a fighting style/game/dance, that is fought/played with music :3

Wikipedia can probably say it better than I can XD

I took Taekwondo back in high school since it was the hip thing at the time and I was getting into alot of fights with people. It really helped me alot both physically and mentally and I got my black belt in my senior year of high school.

I still remember how to do alot of the moves, but I get cramps and can't perform them with accurate precision anymore :P

I was pretty sure the "disguise the martial art as a dance" thing was just an urban legend, but yeah... Capoeira's cool. I tend not to think of it as a martial art much, though. In my head I always just associate it with straight up dancing. Especially since it's pretty give, take, give, take, have fun.

I'm pretty sure it wasn't intentionally disguised as a dance; I'm thinking the fighters never touch each other because the slaves wouldn't want to hurt each other while practicing their moves. But that's my own speculation based on nothing in particular.

I still consider it a martial art, because, well, it is a fighting style. Even if you play recreational Capoeira, if you were stuck in a bad situation and needed to fight, Capoeira moves would be handy to know. But again, that's my own thought.

So the slaves were pussies you mean? Makes sense.

And to be honest, in the few real fights I've been in, I've never actually used anything remotely capoeira. Hell, I've had to bail a friend out of a fight once because he went straight in for a kick. His opponent just spun his footing, caught the leg, flipped my friend, and pummeled the shit out of him. But he also had crappy timing and was an idiot, so I blame that. With well-placed timing and the ability to react, I'm sure it might not have been so pathetic.

... Buuuuut, whatever, next time I'm in a situation where somebody wants to kill me, I'll give capoeira a shot. >__>b
