No, s'true.

I personally think it's adorable and sad.

You can hear the sound of all those Luna/Neville shippers shattering at her other statements, though.

Too bad she didn't make Lupin and Sirius gay, though. That would've been so good.

So which other HP characters are gay, then? Aside from Lockhart, obviously.

I kinda see his point. Sure wouldn't've gone down well with the already-fuming fundie Christians. They held book-burnings without (canonly) gay characters :D

Apparently JKR has also said that she does see something behind the whole Lupin/Sirius thing as well, though I haven't actaully seen this interview so I can't say for sure if it's true.

Other than that... I figured it would be something she had thought about, but I didn't think she'd confirm it as explicitly canon. Awesome. I won't complain about the lack of a gay couple being included anymore, then (it always bothered me that seemingly out of all these people noone was gay/bi, kinda stretched my imagination...)

Really though, I almost like that it wasn't made a huge thing of... I mean, kid of gets across the message that it doesn't change you, to me =)

And from what I can tell it's not something she saw when looking back on the series as an accidental possibility or anything, cause she talked about that ref in OotP... so that's cool too.

I officially now HATE JK Rowling.

I mean, I didn't like her writing style, and I never really thought that Harry Potter was that nice a story anyway. It is a mystery to me why it has become so populair.

But now... making Dumbledore gay? Wow. That's not cool.

Excuse me for saying this, but... I don't mind having a character in a fantasy novel being gay, or anything. But.... Remember, the original Dumbledore in the movies have already died. What image will that leave of him? Playing a gay character, unknowningly, and whenever someone says "he was the one who played the original dumbledore!" it will bound to be replied with "oh, that gay guy?"

She can go rot in hell. This is not even any interesting. It's pathetic - and as mentioned above, it's just another gimmick to earn more money out of a long-dead horse. Harry Potter officially died after the 4th book was released. Anything after that has been... stupid, pathetic, and not worth reading. She has now decided to finally rip apart whatever good was in that as well. She has ruined the entire universe in the face of money and fame, and she does so without remorse.

I hope she will never write another book. And even if she does, I'll actively encourage people not to buy it out of protest of her sickening methods of salestactics.

Then you're the ignorant one, not Richard Harris. Christ, I imagine he'll be laughing his arse off in his grave at the thought that he might need to defend his reputation as either an actor or a man! He nearly didn't GET the part of Dumbledore because of his lifestyle and history.

Richard Harris, Peter O'Toole, Richard Burton. A triumvirate of great actors and insipirational men with NOTHING TO PROVE, dead or alive. Shame on you for using him as a weapon to complain about a character in a bloody novel being gay.

I'm not even going to go into the veiled homophobia on display here as I am sure that CFTF will be along shortly with a more concise response than I could attempt.

That's crap and (hopefully) you know it. Like KingMobUK already said, a teeny-tiny minority of people will remember Richard Harris simply as Dumbledore, given his huge awesome movie history, and what you said is blatant homophobia.
Say that JKR had done a massive turnabout in DH and it turned out that Dumbledore was evil. Would you - or anyone else- be saying "Oh my god; it's sick that poor Richard Harris played an evil person without knowing it!"?
Of course not.
Would it be an insult to his memory that a character he was payed absurdly huge amounts of money to perform as turned out to be evil? No; it's silly to suggest it.

So do you honestly think that anyone is going to spinning in thier grave because a character they played turned out to be gay?
I don't think so.

You do realize she only told people he was gay because someone asked if he had ever found love, right? She didn't just randomly say it, she was answering a question. Again, nobody's all "OHMYGOD, Neville married Hannah! She's only out to get more money! What a gimmick!". If you're not against gay characters in literature, why just focus on that?

Tell that to the 11 million people who bought it in its first 24 hours. Your opinion =/= fact.

Waitwaitwait. JKR has, through the medium of literature, ruined the entire universe? Duuuude.
And, of course, the very concept of gays rip apart the good in everything.

from internet tho but still.

Plus the character being gay doesn't change anything to the books. If you buy another copy it won't be any different. and thats really the point of all this i think, it doesn't matter if Dumbledore is gay or not, it doesn't change him as a character.
Same goes for anyone who comes out as gay, doesn't make them any different than before.
plus this whole thing is a good way to see how far society has moved on from the old small minded days. So far its too early to tell, but if the books start getting banned for this, i will be horrified.

Mikker, HP may be the Naruto or Final Fantasy 7 in the literature industry but that still doesn't change the fact that people still like it.Even I enjoy the occasional episode of Naruto.

Hell even if Dumbledore wasn't gay fans would still pair him what that other guy.. Fans still pair Harry and Draco together despite the fact that they're obviously aren't gay.

I might've overreacted on that a bit, yeah. Sorry -.-

I'm not annoyed about the gay-aspect, and more on the fact that JK is contuing to focus so continue to ruin the universe as she appears to be. As I said, I don't think it matters if someone is gay or not, but revealing this after the books have been out for quite a time, and that there really isn't any indication in it what-so-ever until the last book (an indication I find to be a grave mistake, personally). I just don't like the plot-twists, etc. that she brings, and just about every single thing in the last three books have been disapointments. The only real twist I liked was that harry took up side-lectoring in book 5. Just about everything else were a let-down to me: either too predicatable, too stupid... or both. There were quite a few things that could've saved it, but she didn't grasp any or think up any better, so... Nope.

And of course her book sells, I bought them too. Even if I didn't exactly like the books at the end, that doesn't mean I wouldn't need to finish them. I originally wanted to borrow it from the library, but it had too long a list -.-. And yes, of course it's my opinion. Who elses would it be? It officially died (for me!) when the quality of the books lowered so drastically at the 5th book and onwards. I mean, when the only real positive critique on book 6 was "ehm, well... it explains alot", then you really got a problem as an author.

The Harry Potter universe isn't build up the same as the LotR universe in that it's quite open. That means that JK could say all kind of crap, and it'll still fit perfectly in cannon because "it's a magic world". That means that she can add up small little details on later as a small token for her fans. Well, that's alright, but then make some good stuff up! Don't just rattle on about what happens to each character after the story (that's what fanfiction is for, I never got why she did this), or as here, tell that one or more characters from the books are actually gay. It brings unneccecery attention. Look! It was on the front page on the news page I view. It's just for puplicity, that's all there is to it. She shouldn't have agreed to tell what happens after the story in the first place.

:zap: The fact that you're angry over JK giving fans interedting trivia, amuses me, and infuriates me, to no end. JK went to answer fan questions and one of them was "Did Dumbledore ever fall in love?" JK answered the question honostly and said that he was gay. So what if he is? She wasn't doing it for publicity she was answering a fan. And people WANT to know what happened after the story, it's not rambling. She was asked. So stop rambling about stuff you don't get because it makes it look like you have your head so far up your ass you can see your throat.

She did answer with...

Quote:
She then explained that Dumbledore was smitten with rival Gellert Grindelwald, whom he defeated long ago in a battle between good and bad wizards. "Falling in love can blind us to an extent," Rowling said of Dumbledore's feelings, adding that Dumbledore was "horribly, terribly let down."

And that doesn't sound made up on the spot either. Plus the book isn't about dumbledore it's about Harry. It would kind of be pointless if she put in hints that he was gay.

Well this is kind of irritating.

I don't like it when things are declared canon by the creator despite not appearing in the actual material.

Others have said it already - this just seems like a publicity stunt.

Mikker, even if you didn't mean to imply that Dumbledore being gay is horrible thing or something, it's still kind of offensive to say, "OH NO, THAT POOR ACTOR. NOW HE'LL BE REMEMBERED AS HAVING PLAYED A GAY GUY!!" So? Plenty of straight actors play homosexual characters. Most sensible people don't care. Please try to be a bit more considerate when you post on a topic like this.

Besides, it's JKR's book. She has every right to decide anything about her characters. Technically the books and movies are separate canon anyway, so....in short, it really doesn't matter.

To be honest, this feels like a somewhat pointless addition, particularly considering the books are finished and the addition of Dumbledore's sexuality doesn't really add much. It's her own series, and really, she's allowed to do whatever she wishes... but it still feels pointless regardless.

Well she really couldn't have just added this into the book.

"Anything else you want to know Harry?"
"Yeah um are you gay?"
"Yes very much so."
"Right I'm leaving now... bye..."

She couldn't fit in Dumbledore's epic love twist of win because it wasn't really important enough for her to have to point out in the books. It's a side note, like Neville living over The Leaky Cauldron with Hannah Abbott. Which I also find made out of epic win!

It also didn't really feel important enough to make as a random addendum, not that it makes anything worse by stating it.

It doesn't change the story or Dumbledore's character at all. It's pretty pointless to give Dumbledore a sexuality either way, because it does not matter.

Not like it's going to make any difference, other than piss off some chickenshit parent with her saying "OMFG, THIS BOOK PROMOTES FAGGOTRY! I WILL NOT HAVE MY CHILDREN READ ABOUT GAY PEOPLE!" It's going to be talked about for one day and fangirls are going to draw (and write) more yaoi with him.

That's about it.

Actually, I think it makes Dumbledore's character more complex. Not only is it confirmes he has known love (for lots of people he was this kinda asexual guy), but what I adore is all the psychological stuff that must've happened to the poor guy when Grindy went evil. That adds a major dimension to Dumbledore's already good character, I think.

As for all these "publicity stunts" people, I doubt it. Apparently, there was supposed to be a line in one of the movies where Dumbledore mentions loving this blonde woman and JKR was all "...No. You can't do that."

And it's not like she called together all the fans to say it, anyway. It was a signing conference and people were asking her questions. Objecting to her honest reply to Dumbledore's sexuality is like asking a guy if he has a girlfriend, having him reply "No, I'm gay" and then screaming "Oh my God, that's so irrelevant! Too much information! You're sick!".

Exactly.

It seems that people are ignoring the fact that her reply doesn't sound made up on the spot. I would understand if she just said "lol he's gay" and didn't elaborate on it.
