You can order a new battery from Nintendo if the DS itself is still good.
You ever go to the store and have one of those screens where you try to sign when using a card and it just shoots squiggles all over the place?
My old DS did that, and it won't recalibrate. I like my lite. But the old DS is still around for my extra AC:WW game.
Yes, I got two copies of Animal Crossing: Wild World.

You could try to leave it so they find it and don't know anything, but I think it would probably be best to tell them when you give it back. I may be hard, and they may lose some trust in you, but in the end you'll feel better and they should respect you for telling them.
