Want to kick Philo Vance in the pance already? :D

I've only read until The Bishop Murder Case. Benson and Canary are okay, but Greene and Bishop are really required reading for any fan of the genre, because of the tropes they introduced to the world. Greene's influence is probably not felt that strongly in the English-language world, but it has found an almost strange home in Japanese detective fiction. And Bishop, well, Bishop is just really important (My thoughts on the two books in relation to Japanese detective fiction)

I finished reading Ellery Queen's There Was An Old Woman, which actually borrow heavily from both Greene and Bishop. A mad family which loses its members rapidly, a Mother Goose theme... Add in a bit of Queen magic, and you have a surprisingly fun novel (surprisingly, I say, because I'm not a big fan of the Queen novels of that particular period). And the last page has a nice surprise for the true Queen fans!

I'm reading the Kuroshitsuji/Black Butler manga.
It's interesting, I like the art style and Sebastian is hilarious. Right now I'm up to chapter 43...

Why does it seem to suddenly turn into a Detective Conan manga at that point?

There had better be a good explanation for this...

Finally got off my lazy arse and decided to read the xxxHolic manga.

And so far I can say it's better than the anime. Yuuko has more expression, Himawari seems like more of a useful character, Sakura and Syaoran show up, and I get a better explanation of what is going on in general.

I don't understand why Doumeki hasn't made an appearance yet though. :/

Isn't it so that you have to read both Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle and xxxHolic to understand what is going on in both manga?

That wouldn't been fair to be honest. :/ I read Tsubasa in the past, I got bored, even if it had Sakura and Syaoran.

Well, it's how I understood it and keep reading when encountering talks about Tsubasa. Things that don't make sense in Tsubasa are explained in xxxHolic and vice versa. To be honest, I started reading Tsubasa and gave up after the first volume. The art was nice, even if it was very far from the shoujo-ish style that CLAMP did before, but it just couldn't grab me too much.

Reading the Thrawn trilogy again. Sure the Star Wars Expanded Universe can be hit or miss, but with Timothy Zahn writing you're guaranteed a good book. I'd honestly forgotten how good this trilogy is, and there's still a lot of tension despite the fact I already know the eventual outcome from having read it before. That's good writing.

I'm on Dark Force Rising, to be specific.

Shimada Souji's Suishou no Pyramid (The Crystal Pyramid). It's a locked room mystery, but.... I'm about 300 pages (of 750) into the book and there's still no murder. Well, technically, the murder was mentioned in the prologue, but it has still not happened in the proper narrative, almost halfway through the book. 750 is quite long, so I get why the 'set-up' might take a bit longer, but this is ridiculous!

Just finished Chibi Vamp- :snackood: Karin.

Decent story I guess, terrible ending.

Spoiler: Ranting about said ending
Okay, I'll accept the whole thing with Karin's condition being cured by Love's First Kiss since the manga ended up being a fairly clichéd romance anyway, but Karin having all of her memories of her family wiped just because said family decided she would be better off not knowing they exist?

What.
The.
Fuck.

There was absolutely NO reason to do that! All of her problems had been resolved! Never once, while reading that, did I get the feeling "Boy, Karin would be a lot better off without her vampire family holding her back." The only downside I saw was her having to live in a dark, spooky mansion, but she was moving in with Kenta anyway! Hell, I guess I shouldn't be so surprised, though; her family spent the entire story discussing her various situations behind her back and making decisions about her without her input, despite none of those instances working out or making her even slightly happier, so why should they do things differently at the end, right? Removing the family she loved so much from the picture just means she can focus her whole life on being a good waifu for Kenta, I suppose. ugh

Re-reading the Black Butler manga chapters released up to now by the scanlation. I'm currently at the Noah's Arc Circus story arc where Sebastian... has sex with a woman, I think? Or is devouring (part of) her soul? It's a bit ambiguous... I think.

Finished the Thrawn Trilogy again, so good I immediately dug out the Hand of Thrawn duology, because even though there's ten years of canon in between them, they may as well be a five part series. nd Timothy Zahn's one of the absolute best Star Wars writers.

I know pretty much nothing about the Harhui Suzumiya series, so I decided to start it off from the very beginning: with the light novels. It's pretty good so far. The madness begins!

I never read the light novels, but I did attempt to read the manga once... I gave up after a few chapters, because it was boring me and somehow everything seemed to appear at once. Robot! Alien! Time Traveller! Whatever!

That's because you started in the wrong place. The manga is said to be the worst adaption of the series. Start with either the light novels or the anime.

Ugh no thanks... I read up on Haruhi afterwards and realized it's not my thing. The Hare Hare Yukai was neat, God Bless is a neat song, but the story of it just doesn't interest me. And one giant time-space-continuum destroying thing with Mikuru's chestmole.

I'm reading Les Miserables again. The unabridged copy this time. I read an 'unabridged' copy months back but.. lies. It left a ton of details. I'm trying to make my fanfic which will probably never reach the internet o.O as accurate as possible for an AU. So contradicting. :payne:
Oh and Noli Me Tangere: the English translation at the same time. I must say it shares a lot of similarities/parallels to Les Miserables. :udgy: I have a deep-seated love for it none the less. :garyuu:

Wait.... if the story is gonna be an AU - Alternate Universe - why bother putting tons of canon details into it? I'm not saying spit into the face of it and change too many things. But an AU would mean that things have worked out differently, changed even a tiny bit, which would have a huge impact on how their later life would have gone on.

How can it be AU if you basically follow the canon rules?

I'm reading a Swedish book, The Emigrants by Vilhelm Moberg, about Swedish farmers immigrating to America around 1850. Very different from my usual taste I must say, very different, but I love it even so.

Reading the Japanese version of Even a Monkey Can Draw Manga. Seemingly an instructional manual manga about two men who in their quest to produce the perfect manga, discuss various genres and practices of the industry. It takes the form of parody (nothing is safe; everything is discussed from shonen to shojo, from erotic manga to mahjong manga, from 'sleep' manga to manga aimed at older people), but it is also a very informative manga: there are some really sharp observations about development of tropes, about storytelling techniques and the industry (which are then parodied).

There is an English version available by the way, but it is a partial translation (Viz didn't bother with chapters that discussed genres not known at the moment in the US (the manga industry was very small at the time of publication)).

Yep. It's a genre not very much known outside of Japan AFAIK, but it's popular enough to justify the existence of a weekly anthology of just mahjong manga (Kindai Mahjong).

Well I have learned quite quickly that taking science in university does not allow time for reading for fun ( :sadshoe: ), but the books I currently have on the go are The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch and As Meat Loves Salt by Maria McCann. The latter of which I started...oh, summer 2012 but never continued because my e-reader fucked it up. However, I found it in paperback and couldn't pass it up.

Finished The Vanishing Hitchhiker: American Urban Legends and Their Meanings (Jan Harold Brunvand). The first major work on urban legends/contemporary folklore at the time. It's easy to read volume introducing a series of urban legends that have been known to have been passed on in the US. Brunvand traces variations of urban legends, showing where possible how urban legends made their way across the country, how they evolved and sometimes coming close to the original stories. An entertaining book, but I had hoped that this volume would have discussed urban legends more in terms of function / how they are used in society. He does discuss such elements (morals, etc), but only briefly, and I'd loved to see more of the mechanics of urban legends (like the function of FOAF, the way 'rules' and 'details' are created and added to urban legends), and less of the evolution/variation of urban legends.

My AP US History teacher personally met Randy Pausch before his death in 2008. I haven't read any of his books, but he does seem like a genuine and wholesome man. He taught at CMU in Pittsburgh, which is where I'm living now. I'll have to check out his stuff some time.

Reading the first of the Gaunt's Ghost omnibuses, The Founding. On to Ghostmaker now.

Seems the Tanith could prety much eradicate Chaos if they had more than a steadily depleting regiment. Gaunt's pretty badass in his own right, too.

I'm a guy so I can't really understand this but, what exactly is the appeal of those stories? In my opinion, there's little point of in straight hentai either unless you just want to look at it like regular porn. IDK.

I like H manga (Hetero or Yaoi) or even animated porn better than regular one because... it looks prettier. It does. XD
Although I noticed a difference in Hetero and Yaoi porn, animated kind. Hetero - and even Yuri I've seen - is mostly just really just plain fucking. But the Yaoi I watched was actually focusing more on feelings between the guys, not just fucking, heck... even the genitalia were not strangely off-color from the rest of the body or somehow over sized. It looked pretty realistic.

I just don't see the appeal to it. Maybe it's because I'm a straight male, but I have zero interest in yaoi. But to be fair, it's not meant for my demographic anyways. IDK, if you enjoy that kind of stuff than more power to you.

Trying to finish Lord of The Rings the Two Towers but the Frodo and Sam part is soooooooooo boring. Loved the first book and the first half of two towers. But I'm soon done with it. I also started reading the bible even thought I'm not religous at all but I want to read it to see for myself what it's all about. The english is killing me thought. I understand most of it but I'm exhausted after reading a while of it.
