That's what I do before sending some applications. I go outside, see what place may be hiring, usually grab food on my way home and then send applications to them when I'm home. Other times, I look via internet for places.

At least you're doing something. She shouldn't be all over you as if you're sitting on your ass not doing anything. Hopefully one day you'll get lucky. Just keep trying. :yogi:

It really sounds like you're trying really hard but it's still a struggle, that's too bad. :sadshoe: Would you ever consider going back to school?

I would, but I am getting close to the age of 24 and I do want to get out of the idea of going to school and earn some proper money. I mean, I am applying to some stores for a training position for Einzelhandelskauffrau (trained in the position of sales) but up to now I have got nothing.

my friend is 26 and he is still going to college and working to help pay for it and help out at home. So being 24 shouldn't really be a excuse not to go to school. A good job requires a good degree. Plus When I was going for my associate degree I had a 40+ year old students still going to school and working.

I dunno about where you live, but in Germany, it's generally not seen as THAT normal for a middle-20-year old to start a training position. Especially not if one requires three years. (Even if I can shorten it to 2 years due to already having a finished training position) A one-year one, like my cosmetician one, that is understandable.
We did have a few 30-40 year olds there.

Hopefully you can find work, then! But I do agree with Fool Bright, a lot of good jobs require a fair bit of time spent in school. I know a lot of people who have been out of high school for 10+ years and even into middle age that return to do more post-secondary work in either university or college (in Canada we generally refer to 'university' to places that grant degrees and are theory based [ie like Physics, English, or Medicine] and 'college' would be more like technical schools where you would learn to be a medical secretary, hairdresser, chef, etc. I know the terminology tends to be way different in the states so that's why I clarify). It's definitely something to keep in mind because education really opens doors.

I know this sounds incredibly conceited, but... I am the type of worker who can go without education. If somebody explains or shows something to me at work, I can replicate it and do it overall without supervision after a while. But then, there are parts that confuse...

Like, why do I need to have a training position (or, in your canadian term a 'university' degree) and degree in sales to be a salesperson manning the cash register or stocking items in a clothes store? I mean, I can do that for a minijob, which has a limit of giving me 450€ a month. But if I want a part-time (ie. hours that result in more than 450€ a month) or full-time job there, I require that degree?

It's silly. A piece of paper doesn't say anything about how I work, after all.

Why didn't you say this before! Now I wasted 4 years of my life for my degree in Management Economics and Law, when all I needed was the right attitude!

And the Computer Science course I'm about to complete is definitely a massive waste. Debugging low-latency fault-tolerant distributed systems? Child's play. Just give me a chance.

Sarcasm dear Fool Bright!!

I wish I'd gone to uni, I like my job but I'd love to have an actual career. I thought about doing some sort of IT Open University course but I'm so lazy and bad at studying. I'm lucky I have a job at all, my only qualification is an NVQ level 2 Business Admin which means nothing. Lucky me that the department was so desperate they were willing to hire and train a typist.

I knew that :nick-sweat:

You could still go to Uni. Its never too late for anyone especially if your young. Trust me I admit i'm lazy and bad at studying as well but I still continue to make sure I receive that degree. At the moment I have a associate's degree in computer networking, which I got a restudy it again to make sure I remember everything.

Yeah Louise, what Fool Bright said. There are many really cool people in my University year who're 25-30 years old (probably around 20% of the course, actually!). One of them's a 33-year-old ex-marine with a wife and kids, and he knows a lot more about, say, Linux than I do (luckily he was in my group for our 2nd year project :basil: ).

Also, I plan to study for a PhD after a couple of years in the workplace (will be 25-ish then).

I love how the world's getting to the point where it's almost literally never too late for anything. We're really fortunate to be living in this day and age. <3

Ah you guyssss

You make it sound great and I know deep down that I could do it, but I think I have this problem where I just can't do anything that makes me happy in case it all turns to shit and I'm even worse off at the other end XD

I've made excuses for years about it being too late for whatever. When I was 17 I was saying that it was too late to retake my GCSE's :yogi:

I love that there's a 33 year old with kids on one of these courses, I really don't have a decent excuse do I. I'm going to have a proper look into these OU courses I think, and see what I need before I can start one. That can be my thing to do after I've passed my driving test.

Well, I'm probably older than most of you, but while I was going for my two year degree, toward the end, the age range of the classes was something like 22 through 72. Yeah, imagine that. Grandpa wants to do something with his time and get his college degree.

Okay, to be fair, there were a lot of thirty-and-forty-somethings who were serious about landing a job in the IT field. Grandpa, maybe not so much. Many had their reasons for going for the degree later in their lives... some were veterans, some were changing career direction, and others just had to put off school because life got in the way. In the end, your reasons for going back don't really matter, just as long as you're serious now.

The biting sarcasm after your post may have been a little harsh, but they've all got a point. It sounds to me like you're very dedicated when you work and that's excellent! But as enthusiastic and professional as you are, when getting a job it's sometimes it's less about that and more about what qualifications you have. A piece of paper may not say anything about how you work, but it says that you've got knowledge and skills in a particular area and you had the discipline to follow through with a degree/diploma. I'm not saying you don't, because I'm sure you do have discipline from the way you talk, but that 'piece of paper' is hard proof. It may not be fair, but post-secondary education has high values placed on it from employers. Sometimes going back to school becomes necessary-- and the age range in university/college is quite vast. :phoenix:

Louise, my family always says that even though it may seem like going to school is a waste and it takes too long, at the end of the day, the years are going to go by anyway and you might as well have something you're proud of and can use once they've gone by. I'm not saying that going to uni is the only path for you, because you seem to have a job you like and it isn't necessarily the only path for everyone, but if you can find a program you like then I'm sure you can stick with it. It's definitely not too late if you ever decided to go and trust me, you'll be damn proud of yourself on the other end.

I suppose it might be better for you going back Looby, either way there's always problems. I went straight to uni from school, got my degree and I'm now floundering because everyone is looking for experience over degrees.

I mean yeah I'm damn proud and I worked real hard to get that degree but knowing that it's overlooked and not enough to land a serious position really hurts. :ron:

It's good to get a degree to show you took the time to learn the knowledge for that specific career, but it's also true jobs look for experience which is why it's best to start as what they all it here in the US "internship" in order to gain the experience necessary to get the job you studied for but you don't get paid in a internship.

We call them internships as well Fool Bright. They're not all necessarily unpaid and gopher-like, however - mine last summer involved a decent amount of money (enough to cover my rent! in London! PLUS food and other expenses!) and a shedload of experience (benefit of working at a smaller company - they make you do eeeverything).

Welp, after reading all this I was on the OU website all morning looking at courses, it's all quite confusing, learning the difference between the types of course was my first big lesson XD

I've enrolled on a free course which is just a taster type of thing. Then if I'm any good I'll apply for the real thing, at least I won't have to save up money for too long if at all! It'll be part time because I'm not willing to quit my job and take a massive risk like that, so it'll take a long time but it'll be worth it.

It's so daunting but if a 72 year old can do it, I should be able to dammit!

Thank you all for your comments, it's helped to push me into making a decision :D (I'm risking turning the vent topic into the happy topic).

Yeah you hear a lot about this happening now, it's crap because everyone wants people with experience, but you have to gain experience through being given the opportunity to gain experience and it's a vicious circle.

Lundun prices! £1,000 a month is probably a good liveable wage for pretty much anywhere outside of London XD

A thousand pounds per month is a lot of money for an internship! I mean, here in the Netherlands the standard fee for University students is 250 - 350 euro's per month, I had to work an additional Saturday to cover for my expenses so I had a 50 hour work week. plus 25 hours of total travelling weekly.
Which was pretty hard for a student like myself.

At face value, a thousand pounds a month might seem like a lot of money. However, it's worth noting a couple of things:

- I was earning what was effectively minimum wage (I worked 9-5:30 everyday plus unpaid overtime, equating to about 6 or 7 pounds an hour)
- I functioned as the Android developer of a multi-platform enterprise app (so a shedload of money involved in terms of revenue for the company I worked for), i.e. I built the Android version of the app from scratch, alongside the BlackBerry and iOS developers who were paid much more than I was simply because they weren't 'interns'...so in reality I should have have been paid at least £1500 a month.
- London is E.X.P.E.N.S.I.V.E. I was only able to cope because I shared a flat with three others - and one of the bedrooms was a converted living room!

I'm not complaining too much because I appreciated, even enjoyed the experience, but honestly, I can't deny that I was exploited to a certain extent.

Yeah, I experienced the same thing and heard similar stories from friends. You often fill a full time position for less than minimum wage and the only benefit you get is the experience and it looks good on your resume. I'm glad you enjoyed your internship though, that makes up for a lot of things.

I don't have to worry about a job, as I have a disability, and hence get a fixed income of $1,400 a month. I'm not sure how much that would be in pounds or Euros, but it's enough to get me by.

*sigh* Part of me wishes to have a disability... then again, I have to admit, I was surprised when I heard that Depressions is a legally seen disability, for which you qualify for... um... Arbeitsunfähigkeit. Inability to work due to said disability. Although part of me wonders if I should attempt to work on publishing a book...

Here my vent: I got this PC only 2 years ago, something like that, and recently learned that - while it is capable of playing Sims 3, which I am glad about - it is not strong enough to be able to record gameplay footage at decent quality without it lagging a ton.
What the HELL kind of SUPER COMPUTER do I need to be able to record something in 480p without lagging or even 720p?!

I feel your pain. I bought a brand new computer a few months ago, and it takes nearly 2 whole @##!ing days to upload a 30 minute video to Youtube. The computer is powerful enough to play both Portal games without any slow down, it should be powerful enough to upload a simple Let's Play video.

I'm color blind, I have a certain type where I can't discern colors from one-another, meaning it's down right impossible for me to actually tell apart certain colors.

And EVERY TIME, people ALWAYS ask me "What Color is this? What Color is this?
It gets so. Fucking. Annoying to listen too. People just don't understand that I can't tell them apart, so they ALWAYS need to ask about something they're wearing, or they'll pull out a pen or something from their bag and ask.

One time in Sophmore English class I had a really embarrassing moment where I was with a group and doing a group picture of a scene from a book. I accidentally grabbed Pink instead of Blue or Purple for the water. It took about 5 minutes for someone to catch my mistake, and they had the NERVE to treat me like I was a little kid who didn't know any better.

It pisses me off to no end that some people can't just accept my explanation and just HAVE to ask 'what color is this'.

I don't know about Dimentio, but I know that I do not have slow Internet. When I uploaded my Route Monica battles, which I recorded via FRAPS and did no editing on, the videos took between 10 - 30 minutes to upload, and those were generally between 2 to 5 minutes long. Except the final boss one.
Now, when I record my Let's Play videos with OBS Project, and doesn't matter if I edit them later in Videopad, they upload and process within a minute or two. And those videos are generally 20+ minutes long. So I'm pretty sure it depends on what file type the video is saved as.

My internet isn't really slow, it takes no more than 3-5 seconds for it to load a web page, so I don't get why it takes so long to upload. Maybe it's because there's 2 other computers in my household hogging up all the bandwidth or something, I dunno.

Nah, I think it depends on the file type. I forget what FRAPS saved the videos as, I think AVI, and my current videos are generally MP4, which... I guess is more compressed...?

How fast your browser loads is different from how your download speed is. Your connection has a upload speed and a download speed. If your download speed is slow then it will take a while for downloading or if your upload speed is slow then it will go slow on things that upload.
