I love the Drizzt series by R.A. Salvatore, so I decided to read The Cleric Quintet since it's written by the same author. I love the way he choreographs his fight scenes; the first book of the quintet ended with the main protagonist killing an evil priest by shooting an explosive dart into his chest after dropping a wooden support on him. The best part of the battle was the mummy that the evil priest controlled because it's a fucking mummy.

The most outrageous character, though, is a green-bearded dwarf who wants to become a druid (or a "doo-dad" he calls himself). In fact, he's more druid than he is dward. That's not all; his weapon of choice is a tree trunk with a grip for maximum combat efficiency.

We had to study Lord of the Flies for English and in spite of analysing it half to death, I thought it was a fantastic book- a little sad and a little scary in places, but nonetheless great.

For an average person, it's actually quite good.

But, considering your reading level, no...it isn't

English did this to me too. It made me hate poetry for such a long time but only because the other people's views were all wrong and one fluffy haired tit in my class would always answer with his view, almost jumping out his seat wanting to be picked, tardtastic.

I am going to throw out anything by Germaine Greer, it WILL get some emotions and feelings flowing.

We had to read Frankenstien and Shakespear for our school. Though I remember in Year 7 our English made us carry an egg for two weeks and treat it like a baby. It was based on a book called Flour Babies by Anne Fine.

We are currently reading "Der zerbrochne Krug" (eng.= "The Broken Jug") by Heinrich von Kleist in our German lessons. It's written in old German, so sometimes you have no clue what they are talking about. It's still kinda fun though...

Oh and I bought "Pet Sematary" by Stephen King for 3€ at a little sale at the university in Kassel two days ago. Didn't start to read it yet but I'll start on Monday.
My sister might buy "The Graveyard Book" by Neil Gaiman for me as a birthday present. I know that it is just a children's book but I quite like the other stuff Gaiman has written, so why not give it a try.

Hunting down books from the Legend of Drizzt Series, pretty good if you're looking for a fantasy. It's kind of long. But I'll definitely recommend the Highwayman by Salvatore.

I'm reading McCarthy's Bar by Pete McCarthy at the moment. It's really funny. I was also going to buy The Twishite Saga: New Moan (a Twilight parody) today, but bought something else instead. xD

"The Great Gatsby", after seeing it second on "Top 100 novels of all time" and after suggestions in this thread.
And "To Kill a Mockingbird" simply because I like this genre.

I'm mad into reading, so I've loads of books I love, but at the moment I'm re-reading 'Shamanka' by Jeanne Willis. I bet nobody's heard of it XD but it's really good, it's about magicians and stuff, and I love the style of writing.

I started writing a response in your Grisham thread, but I guess it got closed while I was typing. :(
I wanted to recommend The Client, as it was my favorite from a whole Grisham binge I just got through.

Right now, I'm crazy about Jodi Picoult. I finished "Vanishing Acts" a little while ago, and just got started on "Plain Truth." She seems to write a lot of lawyers, too, but they seem less pulpy than Grisham.

My recs:

Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman!, by Richard Feynman: Non-fiction. The adventures of a man who, besides reinventing the way we think about particle physics, also cracked safes at the test site of the first atomic bomb, gambled with card sharks, and helped expose the cause of the Challenger space shuttle disaster.

Freeman Dyson described him as "half-genius and half-buffoon"; years later, he corrected himself. "[Feynman] is all genius and all buffoon."

The Thirteen Clocks, by James Thurber: My favorite children's book, and, like the best children's books, it's smart, wise, and a little sad. Easily the greatest fantasy I've ever read, and extremely quotable:

Quote:
"We all have flaws," he said, "and mine is being wicked."

Dorian Gray?

Quote:

I disagree. If you find a piece of tough vocab, look it up. Otherwise, the sentence structure isn't too convoluted, Wilde is wonderfully readable, and the book is just delightful. I think this idea of 'reading levels' is one of the many ways in which modern schools have lowered the standard of literacy to a bare minimum.

The way to become a better reader is to read stuff above your reading level, not at it.

Hey, it's FerdieLance! I remember you from Livejournal. Nice to see that you post here. :godot:

My favorite book series is Dragonriders of Pern by Anne McCaffrey; it has its flaws, I'm aware, but McCaffrey's worldbuilding skills are incredible. She managed to create a fascinating and believable world with Pern, and I especially love how her dragons have their own distinct personalities. I also started reading Ursula LeGuin's Earthsea Cycle last summer, and I really need to get back to it. It's a great story with something that I think most high fantasies lack: realistic, "human" characters. In that genre most characters fall into either the "black" or "white" morality, but in Earthsea everyone is a shade of gray. This is a lesser known series, but I also love Catherynne Valente's The Orphan's Tales. It's a very well-written lyrical fantasy.

Right now, books for class aside, I'm rereading Battle Royale. It's a classic. :karma:

I got Animal Farm, Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency and The Great Gatsby.

Finished AF for the third time on Old Year's night, and I'm just finishing off Dirk Gently. I'll read Gatsby after I buy and read:
Who on Earth is Tom Baker?, The Salmon of Doubt, possibly Last Chance to See and The Long, Dark Tea-Time of Soul.

The reason I'm delaying Gatsby so much is because a friend of mine wanted me to read it months ago. And I feel like being spiteful to annoy him.

Oh, and Dirk Gently's really, really good, like The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series. And yes, I like Douglas Adams books, ok? (Though TB's autobiography Who On Earth? seems really cool, and he's my fave actor.)

I've heard some good things about Gatsby though I've never read the book. I couldn't see it in the college liabrary. I'm pretty shocked about the lack of Stephen King they have at the college liabrary.

I rarely read 'cause I rarely find a book that I like, so my favorites list is kinda short. XD

The Host by Stephanie Meyer was and is still one of my favorites. And if you haven't read it, don't bash it because it's made by the same person who wrote Twilight. I (mostly) hated Twilight's guts, yet even though The Host is sci-fi (I hate sci-fi stuff) and a cheesy romance novel (hate those too), I still loved the storyline, the characters, and the whole idea behind it. And it's really well written, considering that it kinda looks at the point of view of two characters at once.

The Mysterious Benedict Society is MY ALL TIME FAVORITE BOOK EVER IN THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD. Despite having a Gary Stu-ish main character and a slow pace, it is very hard to put the book down. I had to read it in class, but I kept reading FAAAR ahead of the class, and even took it home with me to read it again. It was such a good book, I read as much as the class did in two months in only an hour or two. XD It's basically about 4 children who are either orphans or have ran away from home, including a bald-headed brainiac who can memorize anything, a natural leader and puzzle-solving master, a girl who carries around her bucket of tools and can do practically anything with or without them, and a short, growchy, annoying girl who seems practically useless, yet is the most important and astounding character in the entire book, joining this society to try to stop secret messages being transmitted through TVs, radios, cellphones, etc. from an institution on Nomansen Island [or something like that] which are being used to manipulate people's thoughts. It's hard to describe. Just... READ IT.

I can't think of any more at the moment... XP I'll probably post some more when I remember them.
