What started with Megaupload is now spreading to other sites. In most cases the sites are taking themselves offline.
Here's a current list:
Megaupload - Closed

Fileserve - Stopped filesharing. You can only download your own files.
Deleting multiple files. Banning Premium accounts. Closed Affiliate Program.

Filesonic - Stopped filesharing. You can only download your own files.
Closed Affiliate Program. Changed server location Jan 22, 2012. Taken down it's Facebook page
Now using Digital fingerprinting. Files are being deleted as soon as uploaded (as Hotfile did).

VideoBB - Closed Affiliate Program.

Filepost - Started suspending accounts with infringing material (as Hotfile did)

Uploaded.t... - Blocked U.S. access.

Videozer - Closed Affiliate Program.

Filejungle - Owned by Fileserve (same as above). Testing USA IP addresses blocking.

Uploadstation - Owned by Fileserve (same as above). Testing USA IP addresses blocking.

4Shared - Deleting multiple files

EnterUpload - Down (Redirect)

If you have anything on these sites that you don't have backed up to your computer you better get them now before they close down completely.

Yeah my pal noticed this when he tried to stream some DBZ Kai from them but why the sudden wave of shutdowns?

I'd had suspicions it was because of SOPA but then again that never went through I thought.

Mmm. Videogame OSTs are particularly hard to get. Especially since most don't exist commercially in the first place.

Yeah, I know...

There used to be Final Fantasy and The World Ends With You soundtracks in the iTunes store, but for some reason they're not there anymore. It seems they're still on the Japanese iTunes store, but...

I usually wait until I've finished a game before I download the OST. If I can never get the FF6 soundtrack, I'm going to be really disappointed :larry:

(Seriously, what's the point of splitting the store by country like that? Also, why would they stop selling certain albums? I mean, it's not like old albums that aren't selling as well take up shelf space like they do in physical stores.)

As for Square, they've got some sort of issue going on back home. I read something that the albums will be back in March.

But yeah, I have no idea why anyone would want to lock out the albums from the international market.

Some think they were already planning on doing this, and were going to launch it when SOPA passed. When it didn't they were able to do it anyway thanks to a law that was passed in 2008: http://bostonglobe.com/business/2012/01 ... story.html

In related news: the CEO of the MPAA is now under fire for a comment he made:

Quote:
The public has started a petition asking the White House to investigate comments made by MPAA CEO Chris Dodd a few days ago on Fox News. Closing a tumultuous week of wide protest against PIPA and SOPA - two MPAA backed anti-piracy bills - Dodd threatened to stop the cash-flow to politicians who dare to take a stand against pro-Hollywood legislation. Clear bribery, the petition claims, and already thousands agree.

Responding to the mass protests against the PIPA and SOPA bills on Wednesday, the MPAA has revealed its true nature.

First, MPAA CEO Chris Dodd described the blackouts of Wikipedia, Reddit and others as corporate PR stunts which manipulated and exploited the sites' users.

"Some technology business interests are resorting to stunts that punish their users or turn them into their corporate pawns," Dodd said.

Then, a few days later when many lawmakers had already dropped their support for the anti-piracy bills, the MPAA's comments turned even more grim. Talking to Fox News, the MPAA's boss threatened to stop contributing to politicians who don't back legislation designed to protect Hollywood.

"Those who count on quote 'Hollywood' for support need to understand that this industry is watching very carefully who's going to stand up for them when their job is at stake. Don't ask me to write a check for you when you think your job is at risk and then don't pay any attention to me when my job is at stake," Dodd said.

Although it's no secret that the movie industry has a powerful lobby in Washington, explicitly admitting that bribery is one of the tactics the MPAA uses to have their way wasn't well received by the public. A few hours ago a White house petition was started to investigate Chris Dodd and the MPAA for alleged bribery.

"This is an open admission of bribery and a threat designed to provoke a specific policy goal. This is a brazen flouting of the 'above the law' status people of Dodd's position and wealth enjoy," the petition reads.

"We demand justice. Investigate this blatant bribery and indict every person, especially government officials and lawmakers, who is involved."

In just a few hours the petition amassed more than 5,000 votes and this number is increasing rapidly. As a former Senator, Chris Dodd has many friends in Washington so it's unclear whether the petition will accomplish anything, but if the numbers grow big enough the White House won't be able to ignore it either.

The MPAA's response to the PIPA and SOPA opposition this week is a sign that they might be losing control in Washington. At the very least, they are starting to lose their patience and become frustrated, which may not help their cause at this point."

On a slightly unrelated note in response to someone's question: The best place to find Video Game Soundtracks is FFShrine, where they have a booming community of rippers.

Exactly. This is a real catastrophe for finding game music, since there's now an inundation of dead links, and it can be difficult finding someone who can reupload them.

Wouldn't they have had to warn people before they pull down all their material?
At least give them a chance to save their files.

Though I have confidence things will spring up again in time folks will find other places to store them.

I'm sure people will find/make new ways to share files in a relatively reasonable span of time. However, the bigger problem is going to be getting people to reupload the stuff, and also sifting through all the dead links.

(I might have to make an account on a manga raws site, and post threads asking for people to reupload specific mangas...)

Really, I hope the sites aren't actually deleting the files, and are just stopping downloads for now. I mean, if they're deleting the files, they'd better be preparing to close down for good >_>

For the most part, the original posters of the files have access. It's those that are not logged in, and further did not upload the files in question, that do not.

Wupload still works, which I'm pretty pleased about. But this severely limits my resources.

I don't think they realise the impact this will have on the entertainment industry. Speaking about TV in particular: people who live overseas cannot watch episodes live, therefore they have to download them to see if they like series X. If they like series X, they'll buy series X (which is the whole point of this thing, eh?), but how will they buy series X if they've never been given the opportunity to download the pilot and check it out?

It's a bit of a catch-22 they've got going on here.

True, but for that particular argument, as Sven alluded to in my interview about imports, what's saying if they import (download) the first title, that they won't the next as well?

I actually use a Youtube downloader to get all my video game music from Youtube. I also don't really use any of those filesharing websites either but I can see why this would be a problem.

I heard somewhere that Megaupload had been taken down due to the DMCA, a bill that was already passed in 1998 that says something about individual rights or something. What's weird is if they could have done this before, why bother with SOPA and the likes anyway?...

Because it's not good enough for them. They're a bunch of old farts who are scared at the fact people are relying less and less on TV and radio for entertainment. Really it all comes down to greed.

If I need an audio clip or video game song I use a FF addon called Freecorder, which is pretty much a tape recorder for your computer (you can even record sounds from your computer with it).

The music and movie industry need to stop trying to destroy the internet. They're losing more money because they suck than because of piracy. Hell, youtube singers are a million times better than Lady Gaga and LAMO. Music now is just trashy hip hop, rap, or techno about sex. Fanfiction writers are better than the movie writers unless they're basing it off a book. They're just using the internet as a scapegoat for their failures and it's pissing me off. Make better stuff and maybe I'll give you my money. And give us our filesharing websites back. I use them for legal means, you *censored for the good of humanity*.

This. Though sadly it's gotten a huge amount of data traffic as well.

I also recently heard that Mangastream, though it technically didn't shut down, has stopped translating Naruto, Bleach, One Piece, etc. because of Viz Media. I have a feeling it'll end up going the same road as OneManga, though.

I don't know if it said anything about Court, all I've heard is that ISPs will cut off your internet access as a result...really it's kinda a feeble punishment but it's still out of line.

It does. There's one part in the article that mentions the accused having only 10 days to prepare a case and defend themselves in court for "piracy".

The AA fan in me is saying "Challenge Accepted" but yeah it's pretty serious that. Is this just legislation or is this already law in America?

I always thought the authorities avoided prosecuting individual pirates because it was a waste of time and a fruitless venture.

US copyright law is completely idiotic. We've managed to overextend our jurisdiction into other countries with it too! Now people that aren't even US citizens can be charged with US copyright crimes? This is unacceptable. The internet is a tool to share information, and I classify media as information. I don't give a damn about the RIAA. Those bastards are swimming in cash and they have the nerve to pull stunts like these. We need to have a free exchange of information, not letting lobbyist companies pay their way into having all these overpowered piracy bills passed. Long live megaupload. When dotcom is cleared, I hope it can return. If he's not cleared, President obama can pardon him. Anything to show these jerks that we're not going to idly sit by and watch them to steal our internet from us.
