It's basically an arms race. We implemented safeguards against spambots a while back that kept them from registering, let alone posting. The new horde of them proves that people have found a way to program spambots to get past those safeguards. Unfortunately, I don't know of any new way to block them, so my only option at the moment is to smash them when they show up. I've started using mass IP bans to make it harder for them to return (it seems to be common for a single spambot to use several closely-related IP addresses), but that carries with it the risk of IP-banning a human who has the misfortune of having a similar IP address (to my knowledge, no humans have been caught in the net thus far, but it remains a risk). Of course, as luck would have it, this latest horde showed up at a time when I'm distracted by a new video game, so I'm not on as frequently as usual.

We've got multiple layers of anti-spambot defenses, but a few broke through today, as you noticed. It's a neverending arms race.

Well, at OUR site, we got almost nothing. Just a registration code that you have to enter when creating an account. We had HEAPS of adbot attacks as a result. HEAPS of posts to delete and HEAPS of bots to ~~ban~~ report to my higher-up so he can ban them. Us mods can't ban anything (possibly due to previous abuse of power). And it's an easy job for me because I check the forums at least once every day.

Maybe, maybe not. I recall reading that one of the purposes of spambots is to boost the search rankings of whatever product/service they advertise. Less active forums are less likely to be actively moderated, meaning the posts will likely be up for longer.
