No I hated 13 and 13-2, though 13-2 made improvements it also mis-stepped horribly making other mistakes to cover the old one. Hate Lightning she's basically pre-coma Cloud in female form sure she gets better at the end of 13 but (again like Cloud) she sure regresses for the sequel. Why would I want my RPG's to be less RPG-y? Playing as one character can work in RPG's (Crisis Core did it alright) but in general I like party members and if not I don't want my only character to be the most hated character from the previous games (followed closely by Hope who I also understand has a larger-than-most role). Furthermore after the negative backlash to 13-2 they promised they wouldn't make a 13-3 after people got mad about the "to be continued" in the ending which we were told alluded to multiple endings and DLC.
Well...it's NOT 13-3 they dodge that by calling it "Lightning Returns" and everyone just sighs

That kinda stuff doesn't fly with me. Though if you like bland rehashed characters who are just mash ups of the worst elements of other bland characters and RPG's that aren't RPG-like then sure I imagine you'll enjoy 13-3.
Though I didn't know they were making more Star Trek movies (presumably of the modern-style kind) so that should be interesting...though whether it just turns into a cover-based shooter remains to be seen.
I never played FFVII so the rehash thing doesn't really bother me. And actually I'm surprised so many people think Lightning is bland considering how bland the other characters in FF13 are. Snow is forgettable about 5 seconds after he leaves the screen and that priest/fal'cie guy...I don't even remember his name. I think it was a mistake to use the flashback devices in the game as they didn't help describe the characters at all. I think if they would have made Lightning a little less wooden in the first part of the game then she wouldn't be so hated. (Vanille and Snow seem much more annoying to me, personally, but that might be the voice acting) I've heard a lot of people compare her to Cloud and another character from another FF game but since I have never played those it doesn't bother me. I really like the story and premise of XIII the only thing I didn't like was the voice acting/wooden lines which seem to be prevalent in the other FF's I've played (X and XII). I think it's more the script-writer's fault than the story creator or whoever came up with the concepts. I also don't like how characters will have big dramatic monologues in the middle of a level which in the end don't end up doing anything (usually when a dramatic cutscene happens it means you've finished the chapter/level/etc. and it kind of hurts the flow of the story. I look at FF13 as a good game with a lot of potential that just needed a lot of re-writes in the story department.
I'm not a big fan of RPGs. I like ones that don't use Active Time Battles because there I can think and plan some strategy, but I'm not crazy about the kind of battles in more recent RPGs because I always feel like I'm pressing X for 20 minutes again and again and again. And the fact that I can't dodge or move when an enemy is attacking me. RPGs also usually take way too long for me. I usually like a game I can beat withing 30 hours.
So, yeah, I can totally see why people don't like the FFXIII series for a lot of the same reasons a non-rpg fan like me might like them. And I'm aware most FF fans agree with you, which means Square Enix really isn't listening to its fan base.
As for Star Trek, I'm sure it will be a generic shooter. Like I said the appeal for me is just more Canon Star Trek story. And yeah, Star Trek Into Darkness is coming into theaters this may. It looks like its going to be really good and it might be J.J. Abrams' last ST film considering he's now doing the new Star Wars Episode.
I like Snow, he's got a drive and energy in his life more emotional than Lightning is for sure. Though for the record the character designers were told by the director he wanted a 'female cloud' for 13 so Lightning is more than a little inspired.
I remember a lot of your comments from the Zelda section. I agree FFXIII did not explain anything, hell I only learned the name of....that woman...when the dude killed her and Cid apparently had a whole lot of story that never got explained in game. I hear this is down to FFXIII being made for 360 as well and a mass amount of content got cut out. Though XIII's plot is dumb and nonsensical anyway. As for mashing X for 20 minutes, that is basically FFXIII the game except there is L1 occasionally but for most of the five-star ranks you just want the right paradigm to start (normally relentless assault) then you just mash X and win. Already said I thought the cutscenes were fine, and the dialogue in X I liked, I guess FF dialogue just isn't for you.
Though FFXIII is basically the ATB system you hate, I don't mind ATB but I liked the standard slow paced battles of X but eh.
I guess FF is just getting more mainstream.
Still shame, if Star Trek is going to be a standard shooter, which strikes me as odd as the plots of Star Trek episodes don't typically involve THAT much on-ground shooting scenes all the time. At least not enough to justify a game I'd think.
Yeah I read about that 360 thing. I liked XIII's plot and like I said before I think it would have a lot more potential if it was re-written in a way which explained a little more. I like the idea of the fal'cie control/"rise up against the gods" kinda plotline, but the way the characters talked about it didn't really make sense. One minute they were like "Screw the fal'cie, let's take control of our lives again!" and then the next second they were like "Well, the fal'cie say pulse l'cie are evil, so does that mean we have to destroy cocoon?". I think that's what bothered me about the dialogue scenes out of nowhere - it felt like they were trying to stretch the characters' revelations over too long of a time.
I would bet that if you got a good writer to do a movie script based on the lore of FFXIII but restructure it with better narrative and characterization it could be really good, but what was in the game was kind of all over the place.
And yeah, I was speaking directly about XIII when talking about the X button for 20 minutes. If it wasn't for the other things in the game I liked I would have stopped because while it is my favorite battle system in a FF game short of X, it is still nowhere near "really fun" for me. I like it better than XII because it's at least a little more like the old-school RPGs and I like that you don't have magic points. But if an enemy is killing me with an attack every 5 seconds, I'd rather just start hitting him Zelda-style than waiting for my charge bar to load. (That's why Lightning Returns sounds appealing, because you can assign specific attacks to the buttons and can control lightning's movements in the actual battle, meaning dodging is more based on your movements rather than random chance.) Versus any other RPG, I really like the XIII system, but in terms of overall games it's kind of annoying and long. That might go back to why I'm not a big RPG fan. In an action game, running through a hallway and fighting enemies near you will probably take about 5 minutes. In an RPG it might take 30 minutes. I used to be really into RPGs when I was younger, but now adays I don't have the time.
I really liked X, because that wasn't ATB. You could take an hour deciding what to do. I also think the dialogue in X was better than in XIII, but it still wasn't my thing, as you say. The voice actors were a lot better in X as well.
Well, in the last new star trek they used the phasers a lot more like Star Wars blasters and had a couple of shootouts, so i assume they'll use that. Like I said, I'm not really going into with any expectations so that whatever it is I'll get some enjoyment out of it.
I used to have Sam Waterston as my avatar but photobucket added a watermark and also Law & Order has been cancelled for 10 years so it's time for me to move on.
