I think it was me seeing a Pokemon in the darkness that made me think (and dream) that it was Mewtwo. Too bad it wasn't, but Greninja seems pretty cool too.

But seriously, people thought that looked like Mewtwo? How? The second I saw him I was like "oh wow, Greninja!".

It seems ridiculous in hindsight, but in the moment quite a few people were seemingly fooled into thinking it would be Mewtwo. Almost every reaction video I've seen online, much like this one, is almost exactly the same. "OMG it's Mewtwo! Mewtwo Mewtwo Mew-oh my God Greninja!"

I wasn't quite as easily fooled, as I'm always rather skeptical until I see the name flash on the screen for confirmation. Pierre is right though, people did have their expectations shaped by X and Y, much like the Monolith Soft retweet and the Rayman trophy did the same for many this time around.

Well how's this then?

People might not known of what Greninja was, perhaps they hadn't played Pokemon in a long time or had only played with pokemon in Melee.

They see it's a pokemon-themed announcement as Charizard returns to the fight. They see a mysterious figure charging a mysterious energy attack in the shadows.

They know Mewtwo had a chargeable energy attack in Melee and from what they recount Mewtwo could be regarded as *mysterious*. The figure is also vaguely human shaped with defined digits and arms much like Mewtwo.

They'd assume it's Mewtwo even without much knowledge of the pokemon world.

And I give a loud, resounding "meh" at today's reveal.

Considering how visually pretty the character page is now, I doubt we'll get any more reveals pre-release.

Spoiler: Today's reveal
So is Chrom an assist trophy?

Based on the Drama of that I'd say it's fairer to say Robin's Final Smash summons him.

Indeed, it's based on the team up mechanic you can do in Awakening for powerful combo moves. In this case, Robin summons Chrom to attack with his sword while he glides around and fires magical bolts at the trapped opponent. I haven't played Awakening myself (I own it, just haven't gotten to it yet), but I've read that they do a move very similar to this in the game proper.

Also, I didn't think of this at the time, but could the fact that Chrom was shown as already having been taken out of the battle before the trailer even starts have been a Take That moment from Sakurai to the Gematsu leak? It seems almost too coincidental that he apparently lost to Captain Falcon and it was almost entirely one-sided. He spends most of the trailer in pain on the ground, after all... maybe he failed the Smash Bros. entrance exam? :godot:

I Think that the whole "Chrom is down!" thing was Sakurai disproving the Gematsu leak, and I thought he did it so cleverly!

I'd love it if there was a BS stage, with some commentary running in the background, kinda like those titles. That, and if they can find a way to get Ayumi or the protagonist in there, I'd be extremely happy!

Yeah, having a reference to Detective club would be pretty cool.

I still think the Gematsu leak is true to be honest, only Chrom has been wrong, everyone else on the list has been true.

I imagine it would be too much to ask for me to expect Robin's Final Smash (assuming that's what Chrom was there for) could use other characters from Awakening. Then my character and his wife could knock some heads together in the new Smash Bros.

If others could appear instead of Chrom, that'd be a really nice touch! I mean, they did model various Mega Man variants for a split second final smash, so why not some of the popular Awakening characters to take Chrom's place?

Sadly, I think that "TV Game 15" is the only real obscure game they'll add... Here's hoping Ayumi or even Utsugi gets a trophy!

I'm hoping that it's true in that Shulk and Chorusmen get in, but also false in that they're not the last 2 newcomers appearing in the game.

Sakurai made some pretty clear points tonight, so I'm just going to copy/paste his post for good measure, highlighting the important stuff:

Sakurai wrote:

Pic of the day. Along with Robin, Lucina joins the battle!! Her physical ablilites are identical to Marth's--it must be in her D.N.A. However, where Marth's power is concentrated in the tip of the sword, Lucina's attack strength is balanced throughout the weapon, which might make her easier to control. She's also a little bit shorter than Marth.

Image

With the Wii Fit Trainers, the male and female Robins, the Villagers, and Little Mac, varying their appearances and voices works just like selecting alternate color variations. However, whenever there is even a small difference in abilities, that character gets an actual roster slot. That is why you can select Lucina individually.

Image

By the way…there's probably no chance you'll be able to see this in the game, but Lucina has the mark of Naga in her left eye.

While I suppose this makes Lucina a clone, at least Sakurai cleared up his reasons for making her a separate character. It also helps flesh out what he considers when designating a separate character slot and an alternate skin.

Nnnnnngh well it's disappointing if her abilities are identical. Makes it hard to be excited for her.

Always found Marth boring to play, perhaps Lucina will change that.

It's a little upsetting she's the same as Marth in terms of her attacks, but she is a popular and unique enough character that some would prefer over Marth. Seriously, with all the characters in this game, more variety is good variety. Also good to know how Sakurai distinguishes between alternate skin and new character.

If there's one character that should appear, it's Krystal from Star Fox. As a fan of the franchise, I think Krystal would be a great choice (as well as bringing back Falco)

• As for Falco, I think his Final Smash should be changed. Here's what it is:

Arwing Attack: He gets into an Arwing, then flies into the screen, shoots the target opponent. After that, he flies in and does a barrel roll, knocking his target off the stage.

Falco was also one of the clones yes, his down B reflector was more aggressive in that you kicked it at the for so it doubles as a projectile and his blaster actually flinches the foe like a regular hit unlike Fox's rapid fire blaster so he was somewhat different.

I agree he should probably be given an Arwing or something to differentiate his special from Fox's.

I don't have a huge problem with clones. For now, I like the addition of Lucina, but they should have given her a few unique abilities... maybe like a unique final smash... hint hint.

Toon Link is also a clone, but he plays and feels different, which I'm perfectly fine with. The only type that bother me are with Fox/Falco/Wolf and Melee's Mario/Luigi/Dr. Mario. All of them played very close to the others. Oh, and Pichu was awful too.

They differentiated Luigi a fair bit now though, he's got two unique specials a unique final smash and his normal moves are different as well.

Falco's "Phantasm" attack is also more quicker than Fox's "Illusion" attack. Also, his Landmaster is weaker than Fox's, but faster. Also, I'd really like him to change his moveset. (specials)

Special: Twin Lasers. This time, he gets dual blasters, and they have the same fire rate as Fox's blaster. However, these can only fire three at a time when held down (Just like the laser in Star Fox 64/3D)
Up+Special: Flying Falco. Almost like Meta Knight's attack. Can also be used for recovery.
Side+Special: Same as SSBM and SSBB.
Down+Special: Reflector Kick.

Final Smash: Arwing Attack

I wouldn't say it's out of the realm of possibility considering Capcom has a representative, but at the same time, I'd probably expect to throw out some Street Fighter trophies over AA first if they went down that route as SF is immensely more popular. I think it'd be a cool nod, and while I think it's possible, I do think the chances are very, very slim.
On April 3, 2016, Court Records Forums experienced a miracle upon that day.

Someone on NeoGAF was nice enough to translate Sakurai's most recent weekly Famitsu column, where he expands a bit more on the info he spoke about on Miiverse. The important parts are highlighted, but it's overall a pretty interesting read.

Masahiro Sakurai wrote:
We've just announced two new characters who will be joining the fray in the upcoming Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Wii U. One is Robin, the avatar from Fire Emblem: Awakening, and the other is Lucina, a swordswoman who plays an important role in the same title. I'll skip over the details.

"What? Not Chrom!?" I suspect a lot of you will ask. Of course, Chrom is quite popular, being the protagonist of FE:A and all. However, I chose Robin and Lucina, and I will elaborate on my reasoning.

Robin appears in the game as a Tactician and functions much like a Mystic Knight (note: FF terminology, but equivalent to magic swordsman). I thought to utilize his all-around nature by assigning swordplay to his Smash attacks and magic tomes to his special attacks--that is, allow him to use magic.

His neutral special is thunder magic that grows stronger the larger you charge it. He uses fire magic for his side special, and wind magic for recovery as his up special. Although Robin doesn't use dark magic in FE:A, I decided to assign it as his down special. It isn't the first time I've given moves to a character that they don't use in their respective game in order to capture certain aspects of the original title.

I also implemented the system used in FE:A, in which tomes break after overuse. Likewise, I included a similar system for the Levin Sword, which breaks after a certain number of uses. However, both the tomes and the Levin Sword will quickly regenerate after a set period of time.
Lucina uses the same techniques as Marth, a fighter with whom I'm sure most of you are already familiar. I even went so far as to make their strength, speed, and special attacks almost identical.

However, what sets Lucina apart is the fact that the strength of her attacks is uniform along the blade. Marth's playstyle emulates the elegant swordplay of a fencer by dealing more damage when he strikes with the tip of his blade, but the damage Lucina deals is evened out. Thus, I think that Lucina will be much easier than Marth for novice players to play with.

I played all the way through FE:A and really wanted to include a character from that rich cast in Smash Bros. Naturally, I considered adding Chrom to the roster, but the decision wasn't easy by any means.
At the end of the day, Chrom would just end up being another plain-old sword-wielder like Marth and Ike. Compared with other characters, he lacks any unique characteristics.

Conversely, when the idea of including Robin came to mind, conceiving the character was so easy that I immediately saw how it would work. From standards to specials, grabs to throws, all aspects of his moveset just fell into place. Not only did he possess characteristics unlike other fighters, but he also captured the essence of the Fire Emblem series. It was perfect!

In the end, if a game isn't fun, then there's no point. Of course, it would be really easy to make a game by churning out a ton of similar characters, but that's not how I produce games.

Initially, I had considered including Lucina as one of Marth's alternate costumes. After all, she has a close relationship with him in FE:A. In such cases, even if two characters' names and voices differ, as long as they function the same way, I assign them as alternate costumes. The Wii Fit Trainers, Villagers, and Robin are examples of this setup.

However, even though Lucina shares her physical stats and techniques with Marth, the characteristics of their attacks differ. When two such similar characters function in an even slightly different manner, I give them a separate spot on the roster since that will affect battle records and whatnot. In that sense, you could say she was very lucky to join the fray!

I was wondering about Robin's sword and tomes, since the trailer specified the tomes wore out and needed to regenerate while the Miiverse post from last night only mentioned the sword need to regenerate. Turns out it was both. I would surmise that means for someone to use Robin effectively, they'd have to balance using magical attacks while the sword regenerates and vice-versa, rather than just going all out on their opponents.

It also seems that Sakurai pretty much chose Robin right away to represent FE:Awakening, given how easily he was able to come up with a moveset for the character.

And finally, I find the part about Chrom being "another plain-old sword-wielder" particularly amusing, considering what was discussed here just a couple days ago.

Weren't there some third party trophies in Brawl pertaining to Sonic and Snake? I don't recall in particular, but there might have been a few more Sega/Konami ones other than the Sonic/Snake rep trophies. Or maybe they were stickers, as I said I forget the specifics.

Thank you for the translated message, Orca, it was very interesting to read!

I'm glad there will be differences between Lucina and Marth, but I sort of worry about Lucina being more novice friendly. Does that mean she doesn't have as much potential as Marth to be an efficient fighter, or does it simply mean she will require less time getting used to? I hope it's the latter.

Pictures like these on the official super smash website bother me to no end. The inclusion of female characters shouldn't increase the amount of sexualizing pictures; the internet usually does a good job of that on its own.

It's true SF is much a more popular series and has much more chances of getting some of its characters as trophies but we can still have a little hope (not too much) since Nintendo often throw nearly unknown characters in SSB's cast just to advertize them (Kid Icarus, Little Mac, Rob and many others...).

I wouldn't say it's really sexualizing, I see this as nothing more than a good laugh.

We got a fairly interesting change in gameplay today, concerning K.O.s;

Image

Screen K.O.s and Star K.O.s are back, the difference this time is that as the match timer reaches closer to the limit, these K.O.s will not occur anymore. This explains why we've seen top-side defeats that result in an explosion instead of an aforementioned animation.

While Sakurai didn't mention why this change was made, I would guess it may have had to do with people feeling cheated if the extended animation cost them a last-second win in previous games. It did save me from having to go into sudden death a few times, though I admit I'm going to miss seeing slow motion screen K.O.s during the time out at the end of a match.

I feel it's always important to pass along information that can help us understand where the designers are coming from regarding their decisions about things like this. Glad you enjoyed it! :godot:

Stuff like that never really bothered me. I see it more like Sakurai making fun of people that like to put female characters in intentionally awkward situations. Kind of like how he's put Peach and Link/Marth together in previous images to poke fun at the shippers out there.
