I dunno....less cross dressing villains and less womanising would've made it better, just couldn't take Kuja seriously while he dressed like a girl.

Plus Trancing was a bit of pain since you had no control over it really.

FFIX was my favorite game in the series. I loved the main cast because they were all balanced characters, each with his or her own strengths and flaws. You could see them all develop as the story moved on, especially Steiner and Freya (in my opinion). Steiner had the best character development, in my opinion; he started off as the stereotypical knight who only wanted to protect Garnet and had little free thought of his own outside of his charge, but as the game went on he opened his mind to the world while realizing that there's more to being a protector than sheer servitude. By the end of disc three, he was one of my favorite characters.

...I also love Steiner because it's so easy to set up hilarious name gags with him because he's a captain. I named him American in my last playthrough, so he became Captain America! :keiko:

I agree that the Trance system could have been a lot better, though. I hate it when you end up going into Trance during a random battle with easy monsters.

Or worse before a boss battle

Yeah Steiner kicked ass XD
I fear he gets overlooked too much in place of....well Vivi really but I was never a major Vivi fan. Still I love Steiner's devotion and servitude, plus his standard skills when advanced are amazing you know? XD Though you've made me want to name him something incredible next time I play the game.

I dunno....after the incident in Cleyra, which I was sure wasn't her fault until a friend recently reminded me, I'm not sure whether to hate her or not.

Freya was actually my favorite character from that game, and maybe one of my top favorite characters in Final Fantasy. She was given a personality that seems so non-typical for female characters in JRPGs. She was strong and eloquent because she was trained as a knight/dragoon, but at the same time she had a touch of spunk and wasn't afraid to give lip to Zidane and Amarant on a few occasions. Usually spunky girls in JRPGs are complete tomboys and the only way you'd know they were girls were by looking at their chests, but Freya showed a more feminine side when it came to conversing with royalty, or to her relationship with Fratley. On top of that, she can hold her own in battle and doesn't get kidnapped or fall in love with the main character, which often happens with female party members. Her dragoon skills were also very useful in battle. I don't think she ever left my party after I got her, unless something story-related kept me from doing so. :edgy:

Beatrix is awesome too, of course, but I don't think we were given as much time to empathize with her story as much as Freya's, at least for me. If she joined the party too, that would've kicked so much ass. And her relationship with Steiner is quite adorable.

It's hard not to love all the main character from the game. They all get some screentime to develop their characters... well other than Amarant... but even he changes a bit towards the end. Quina also didn't get much to it's character but everyone loves Quina anyways.

I think when I finally settled with my favorite party it was Zidane, Eiko, Quina, and Amarant. Zidane for the obvious coolness was well as being a surprisingly good physical attacker, Eiko for the white mage support and healing, Quina for the awesome blue magic spells and status abuse, and Amarant for another good physical attacker and infinite MP code (Seriously, just have him spam Chakra on people <3).

Kuja, I love. Even despite the man-thong.

Spoiler:
What other villain destroyed an entire planet in a bitch fit? Kuja also manages to outright destroy the party on his way out with an Ultima.

Spoiler:
Yeah but Beatrix manages to do it several times with standard sword abilities.

Kuja was a pain for me, it didn't help that Dissidia made him such a camp pansy....ok I kinda figured he was a pansy being a mage, gimme a musclebound mage anyday just to break the stigma but Dissidia made him camp whereas before I could pretend he was just a normal psychotic monkey who crossdresses.

Zidane was actually the biggest playable pain for me....I mean sure he's FINE but nothing outstanding outside his Trance form in which case his magical potential is incredible for destruction. Though being stuck with someone who's main trick is 'steal' just....it's not great I'll say that.

It's heavily implied that Kuja actually kills/severely maims the party on his exit. The most Beatrix ever does is knock them off their feet and weaken them a ton with her attacks.

Ever notice how when Beatrix ends a battle everyone is reduced to 1 HP but when Kuja exits everyone just falls flat?

My dream team

Cloud_(yup.)
Yuna (for anima, and in my game I gave her Doublecast and flare. And with Nirvana, that's about 500 casts a battle. Ouch. :uramidn: )

Kain.(With the Phoenix Augment, he's a life saver.)
and...

Steiner deserves a lot more love, for sure. He's a great character with a realistic personality, but he gets overlooked. :< And yes, he's awesome in battle! I love spamming Shock later in the game, and he's great once you get some of his best weapons. Hell, he's great throughout the entire game.

Do it! XD Make him Captain Planet or something. In my last playthrough (where he was Captain America), I ended up naming every character after a country. The script became downright hilarious with lines like "We're the newlyweds, Germany and England!" and "Some call me the Flaming Canada."

Spoiler: Captain America!

Heh that reminds me of a certain anime I once seen
Also Rarikou certain attacks aren't unique to everyone, Grand Cross for me will always be reminiscent of Necron's ultimate move yet ExDeath used it long before him. You can't just hate someone because they use an attack that belongs to the Final Fantasy Universe in general besides Cloud is overrated anyway.

Speaking of Cloud, I'm curious about finding him in FFT:War of the Lions....that said I'm sure that's a long way off as this game is EVIL.
It's like throwing you into every battle where there are more enemies and they are all stronger with more abilities than you.
God it makes me sick, Gaffgarion beat me at Golganna Gallows by spamming Shadowblade so he could kill all my characters with the power to revive.

I loved the character of Steiner, definitely provided comedy moments, and good development throughout the game. I also loved Vivi due to sheer cuteness, but as much as I looove FF9, the characters on a whole are weaker then characters from other Final Fantasy games. :/

Grind. Focus is your best friend when it comes to learning abilities. Enter a random battle, kill all but one enemy, weaken and immobilize it, then just keep using Focus to gain a ton of Job Points (make sure you equip the JP Up ability, of course.)
You can master pretty much any job in 20-30 minutes tops that way.

Once you know the Focus trick, Tactics is a very, very easy game.

Grinding is what I do now but I didn't know the Focus trick still I thought Focus was a Ramza only ability....maybe I'm wrong.

That said the random battles are hard themselves, everytime someone dies I feel I should restart because it would take too long to train someone of equal level.

Last time I got thrown in again 8 Chocobo's EIGHT! Including a Black and Red one and boy were they annoying.

Anyone who can become a Squire can learn Focus. That is, Ramza and any of the 'generic' human characters (not counting people like Delita and Algus who don't stay with you anyway.)

I just save before every battle and restart if one of my characters turns to crystal. The hassle of having to play a battle over far outweighs the cost of permanently losing a character into whom I've invested so much experience and equipment.

I find it amusing how they allow you to name the character despite the fact his actual name is voiced in cutscenes but ok.
Also is there anyway to preview the battlefield beforehand? Like in FFTA you can view the battlefield beforehand and choose the correct units, with this one I feel like I'm throwing random units at powerful foes.

Do they actually call him by his name in cutscenes? I wouldn't know, I didn't play the PSP version very long since the ridiculous load time for special attacks drove me nuts.

Nope. Just try to have a well-balanced team and you should be fine.

The load times are a problem but the cutscenes are beautifully handled and yes he get's called Ramza.

Could you answer this other question for me?
Is the level of enemies pre-set or is it determined by the strength of the units you throw into battle? Would explain why you can't view the battlefield before hand as it was still generating enemies.

Enemy levels are set in required battles and vary according to your character levels in random battles.

I'm sure the game doesn't let you preview the battlefield because Square just didn't think to add that function when Tactics first came out. It's not nearly as much a problem as in the Advance games anyway.

I just beat Umaru (the weird octopus thing in Lethe River) in FFVI, and I gotta say I'm already in love with the soundtrack.

Of course, the guy also did Chrono Trigger, so I guess it's no real surprise. (Although I didn't really like FFIV's soundtrack... but it seems that FFVI's is of better quality, so maybe that's it...)

Oh yeah VI has some great music, people especially seem to love Dancing Mad...but you'll uncover that in time as for me I'm quite a fan of the Decisive Battle....especially the cover by the Black Mages.

I thought his name was Ultros. =/

And yeah, he did do a few soundtracks on CT when Mitsuda fell ill. I don't really know which ones he did per se, but I'm sure he did the Tyrano Lair theme.

And as for dissing the FFIV soundtrack, you make me sad. =( Battle of the Four Fiends is one of my favorite boss themes.

Yeah the giant tentacle monster pervert is probably ultros....was called that in Dissidia too to my knowledge....god he's such a joke a little bit of humour.

Oh and make sure you examine clocks in cities and towns....I'm not sure why but I normally find Elixirs in at least one grandfather clock per town.

And Battle with the Four Fiends is an IMMENSE piece of music.
It makes me sad one of my friends only thinks FF's music really took off at FFVIII with Man with the Machine Gun.

Oooh, I liked Tyranno Lair ^_^ The major/minor/weird-ish-thing opening is great, and I love how it transitions from that into rock xD But I like the entire CT soundtrack (...okay, Silent Light is kinda meh) so it doesn't really matter which part he did ^_^

I really like stuff like the battle and victory themes in FFVI... which are the exact same as in FFIV, but with more quality, but I thought those songs were pretty meh in FFIV, so I think it might have to do with the quality, and not as much with the actual music (sad but true) Anyway, I hate to make you sadder, but I don't really like Battle of the Four Fiends too much. (In terms of boss music, I think I've been spoiled by World Revolution and Battle with Magus)

Why would I be sad? I like what's good. And I will give you some cred, Mitsuda made some pretty good boss themes.
On April 3, 2016, Court Records Forums experienced a miracle upon that day.

And yeah, he did do a few soundtracks on CT when Mitsuda fell ill. I don't really know which ones he did per se, but I'm sure he did the Tyrano Lair theme.

"The Dark Messenger" from Final Fantasy IX actually borrows part of the melody from Tyranno Lair. Give both a listen and you'll hear it.

The first time I heard Tyranno Lair I thought it sounded REALLY familiar but I could never place my finger on it. I was replaying the game soon after playing FFIX and when I heard it again I was like "HOLY SHIT THAT'S WHAT IT IS!". It made me really happy to see that really awesome connection there.

Vivi and Steiner are both awesome characters. XD I also like Beatrix, she should have stayed in the party though. D:

I practically played that game just for Beatrix and Freya. Beatrix had some sweet character depth, she would have made an awesome addition to the team. If you ask me the FF series needs to break the mold a bit and have a female as the physically powerful type with the strength and hp (Celes was good but more of a mage than pure fighter, Tifa kind of lacked on the power front, sadly).
If this happens in FFXIII I may weep tears of yuri joy.

Well then get a bucket ready because Cloud LIGHTNING (REAL LIGHTNING!) is ready to dish out physical feminine justice for you. Though I felt Tifa did fine physically I think LIGHTNING! (REAL LIGHTNING!) is going to be your typical awesome warrior/mage that's unbalanced kinda like Cloud was plus I THINK she has a gunblade. Sword wielding main-heroes are generally good warriors, Terra being an exception but she was always more of a mage.

Booyeah. lol Cloud. Oooh I didn't like Terra, she was so whiny. :sadshoe: Okay, she did have her reasons, but it really encroached into Mary Sue territory at times, especially when
Spoiler:
she ended up looking after poor orphan kiddies zomg
.
God, I'm going to have to buy a 360 now. Oh well, at least there's always Fallout 3 and Skate 2 to go buy for it, anyhow.

I don't think she can really be called a Mary Sue when...

Spoiler:
She can go from Coward to WORLD TOUR OF SUPER SAIYAN DESTRUCTION!

At the drop of a hat.

I lol'd IRL. You make a good case there, Pierre. :P
Speaking of FF characters I dislike, there will forever be an obsessed fantard patch of hell in my heart for Rinoa, lulz generated by giving her limit breaks highly mature filthy names notwithstanding.

She wasn't so bad.....but maybe that's because I named her Mutt Gaylord....and never used her.....and let her drift off into space a few times.

Oh and to back up my Cloud LIGHTNING! (REAL LIGHTNING!) claims from earlier...I present proof.

Spoiler: GET THE PROOF!

Well... regarding Terra one of them isn't such a massive spoiler.

The other is common knowledge kinda. You played Dissidia Bad Player?
