I don't understand why anyone would think Tales of Symphonia is underrated. It is a good game, I will give you that, but it sold very well in North America (giving the type of game it is), in the hight 600 000 if memory serves. Now, if you want an underrated Tales of game, it have to be Tales of the Abyss, one of the best Tales of and which horible sales in North America basiquely jeopardize the localisation of any future Tales of games in North America (including Tales of the Tempest for DS, Tales of Destiny for PS2 and Swords of Legendia for Wii).

Gee, I don't know, maybe the MASSIVE BUGS~, the total disinterst of Namco/Bandai to properly finance the voice acting and the extremely generic feel of the Tales series, in addition to their extremely dumb decision to not port the remake of Tales of Destiny over here, might have something to do with the lack of sales, AND the screwing over the franchise in NA?

And Baten Kaitos? It's rated correctly. Good RPG for the Gamecube... but there's better.

Maybe lots of people liked them because they're... good? XD

Very few (as in two) of my gamer friends have ever even heard of the series.

I've played 1, 2 and 3.

Found them particularly boring... especially 3. I wouldn't mind trying to get through 2 again, but I just don't really see the whole point.

I don't like them. The one that has the most merit is III, as it has the best gameplay, but even that's no great shakes.

Out of the lot I've played, 3 was the least fun, and that's gameplay wise.

Agreeing that of the first three, three was the least entertaining. Two was quite good, and honestly, I'd skip over four completely. Five, though, was very good as well.

Gave up on the series when 3 was found to be awful, honestly. Kinda like I gave up on Final Fantasy after 8. Not that 7 was good, mind you.

Okay, this might sound off topic, but it's kind of not.

Has anyone ever played "Virtual-On" or heard of it?

I guess that means it's sort of underrated if not many people knows about it.

Hmm...

Well, Fire Emblem: Sacred Stones. It did well critically, but it didn't catch on with a lot of fans because it was fairly easy and the quality of the story and gameplay weren't up to par with the game preceding it, or the games that came after it. I guess that's more like "underrated by series fans". I liked the game a lot and it's the game that got me into Fire Emblem in the first place!

Another one is Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories. Critics and fans alike hated the card-based battle system, and there were a few strange elements like having a choice in the layout of a room you're about to enter and what kind of enemies would appear, and many also disliked Riku mode. However, I enjoyed the game immensely, even if hunting for the right cards to get into the next room got annoying. The game had a few FMV sequences and, although simplistic, they were pretty darn impressive for a GBA. Also, I actually kind of liked the battle system. And though the stories in the Disney worlds seemed even more rushed than they were in the main games, I thought the central storyline was good and perhaps the most dramatic of the three games, which is expressed more clearly in the PS2 remake Re: Chain of Memories. Re:CoM is going to be released in the U.S. later this year.

I also think Pokemon Snap, Pokemon Puzzle League, and Trace Memory are a bit underrated... and the Paper Mario series, Professor Layton, and Elite Beat Agents too to a lesser extent...

Super Mario Bros. 2 - mainly because it is so different from both the original and SMB3 (and is considered the 'black sheep' of the series.

Final fantasy Crystal chronicles, it got a lot of hate due to being the first FF game on a nintendo console for a long time but not having the same kind of story and gameplay as the others. I personally really liked this game, the graphics and music were excellent, and the multiplayer was without par (despite being hard to set up), I enjoyed it as a single player experience as well.

I'd probably say Billy Hatcher as well. Despite the often fairly irritating gameplay (ie. your egg getting stuck on a platform) the game was well designed, and showed more potential than any other of sonic team's more recent works. But due to being a failure in sales terms, possibly due to being seen as a "kiddy" game, the game was doomed to not have another sequel.

Yeah I was like that, I got PW:JFA 2 years ago and I only got PW:AA in July this year and then it still wasn't a new game it was preowned. But of course as soon as I found the game I found them all over the place! :chinami:.

For me... well... yeah, you know... ahem.. >_> I've said it so many times, you all know which one... Power Instinct.

...and Waku Waku 7.

I love the Power Instinct series because of it's wackiness, and the music is awesome, particularly in PI2 and Matrimelee. People bash it, though, simply because they think it's not as good as Street Fighter or is just weird in general.

Also, I have to agree on the earlier mention of Ar tonelico. I played it myself, and although I didn't mind the generic storyline, I found the gameplay boring and the sex jokes were dumb.

(P.S., sorry if I keep talking about Power Instinct! >_>)

Beyond Good & Evil
Damn it, I played this game like three or four times now and it's made of unbelievable win!
It has a very unique setting, atmosphere and outfit, cool characters, a suspenseful storyline and an entertaining gameplay. The only bad side is that it's pretty short, but the game was always intended to be the first part of a trilogy, so this was "just" the intro part.

I freakin LOVE Ubisoft for finally deciding on making the sequel. LOVE. I just hope that there will be a PC version again since I don't own any of the next gen consoles.

And the Phoenix Wright series. At least here in Germany.
Seriously, why has nobody even HEARD of it here?!

An SRPG that literally Breaks the mold of Strategy RPGS. You play your standard FE like game play in a grid with elements such as the Weapons Triangle, Geography tiles & Medieval music.
We all know that an SRPG also includes battles. Once you start your first battle, this is where the similarities end.

Spoiler: OMG BATTLE IMAGES
Image Image Image Image
You're then taken to this amazing screen before you confirm your selection. The music immediately changes from a simple Medieval theme to heavy rock -- pumping you up for the battle. After confirming your selection, your Unit then attacks the opponent's Unit. This isn't just your friendly fire or simple slash one after another type of battle, these Units REALLY take SRPG battles to the next level. The charging Unit jumps over the boundary between its opponent, killing any members in its way. The opposing retaliates by counterattacking, also killing any members that were charging. You then watch these little sprites kill each other one by one.

Image

If that clever battle animation wasn't enough, you're also given a responsibility over your Unit during battle. You must give them directions as to how they fight with your D-pad. You may choose to increase their attack, decrease their attack, or activate skills that they may be able to use -- all through the power of the gauge in battle. This helps influence the outcome of your match where you can even experience matches where Axe wielders can actually defeat Sword wielders for once. This provides an experience you would not expect from your generic SRPGS.

There are many more features to this game that completely deviates itself from your generic SRPGS. So if this battle system already amazes you, expect many more once you play the game. It's available for both the GBA & PSP and I promise you, you'll enjoy the experience whether you're an SRPG fan or not. It sure got me into the genre. ;)

A vision without action is a dream.
An action without vision is a waste of time.

Fahrenheit: For PS2 was an awesome game with some bloody brilliant FMV's and is fun too. It's so immersive and there's so many subtle things you can do. :godot: I got laid optionally in it go me, but seriously it's got multiple endings and while they ain't that hard to differentiate between achieving them and just how it was set up is brilliantly.

Someone else who likes Killer 7! I have to admit when I heard that the GC version had bad controls I was turned off it and I didn't even see the videos of the gameplay! It wasn't until I played No More Heros that I decided to pick up the PS2 version and loved the game ever since. :keiko:

Dot Hack is another game that has beautiful graphics and a decent story it is unfortunate that Dot Hack GU doesn't have the same style all the graphics look a lot bleak. The message board on GU is another story! It feels like a real one you even have an deviant art like site and a news section that has videos that you can play on certain stories.

Well Heart of Darkness is a pretty good game though the story is basic your dog gets kidnapped and you have to go rescue him and end up stranded on another planet. The gameplay is like that of Out of This World and the enemies look like the basic black heartless you encounter in Kingdom Hearts but they come at you in a swarm and one hit can kill you.

I would mention Odin Sphere but I think some people know about it already.

Creative and enjoyable games like this one are very rare today, it's a shame.

A lot of people at my school under-rate Spore. I think it's a truely fantastic game, and while it may not be like The Sims, were you can control people's lives and lock them in rooms with no food to watch them die a slow and painful death see how long it takes for them to lure the Grim Reaper so I can verse him to a game of rock paper scissors just to get someone back, only to kill them off again, Spore has this unique feeling (well to me), that the creatures you create act as your children and you have to take care of them. Plus, I get into a lot of arguements with Robert about the game, which is fun.

Also, I think Wii music is under-rated too. I love that game! I had just as much fun with it as I did with Brawl#

EDIT: Also, Portal! I enjoy the 6 hours I wasted on the game...poor companion cube

Sorry for the necro.

Vexx-Camera angles were bad, plus character design left a little to be desired (and some collecting stuff missions), but the gameplay was solid, level design was good, music was great, and it's a third party platformer that you don't feel like a kid for playing.

Surviving High School-Never heard of it. Not surprised. It's a cell phone game (yep, a cell phone game) that I've been playing for the past couple of years. There are four games in the series right now, and basically it's a text based adventure game that has a new episode updated each week. Each episode has multiple endings so there is a good amount of replay value. The characters are funny and I just find it a good game, especially on a cell phone.

Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy-Bad camera angles again, but it was a decent adventure. It had some good levels. The two characters were fun to play as, and there is a good amount of originality in it.

Metal Arms: Glitch in the System-A third person shooter, yes, but this is a great original one. Funny characters are in, so are great upgradeable weapons. The game is challenging and long. Plus with a huge replay value (multiple difficulty levels, hidden items and places, and it just having great levels), this is one of my favorites.
