Yeah. The EX Series was definitely a mixed blessing.

Beyond mixed to the point of wantonly fucked up and pissing itself, IMO.

I played Capcom vs. Marvel at my Uni's underground arcade tonight. OMFG THAT GAME IS RIDICULOUSLY HARD! Even on the easiest setting it rapes you like a ferocious beast. The fact that I was using arcade controls didn't help either. Bison got his ass handed to him buy some slut named Sakura. >_> Best waste of my two tokens EVAR! AND I DIDN'T SEE MEGAMAN ANYWHERE! WTF

First in-game screenshot of SFIV.

It's been confirmed that the gameplay will still be set in a 2D plane. I dunno about you guys, but regardless of gameplay, it's looking pretty neat.

For the love of God, I hope the recent link I've given is fake.
Auto combos? Crap.
Parrying gone? Crap.
Takes place Pre-SF3 w/ no SF3 characters? Crap.
Fireball/Projectile looks similar to EX? Crap.
2 new screenshot especially Ken? Crap.

Guess we'll have to wait and see when the new issue of EGM comes out.

Auto combos = Ryuko Ranbu/Hisshou Buraiken/Final Destruction/etc.

And KoFXI has that feature on PS2. I don't see you bitching and whining that it RUINED THE GAMEZ.

Me "bitching and whining" about games that I've never played? Does not compute.
Anyways, I'm not losing hope if they're true. They just better be implemented well enough.
In other words, I'll wait for the video (in January) and some hands-on impressions.

Considering how SF3 was a HUGE COMMERCIAL SUCCESS~ (hint, it wasn't), it actually makes sense that everything that was SF3 is gone.

Also, considering how they change the core system every time there's a new number, it also makes sense that parrying is gone, too.

I like Third Strike as much as the next guy that's played it, but the character designs sucked for the most part, the music was bad, and other than the extremely solid system, it didn't offer anything to Joe Q. Gamer.

Which is why it bombed commercially. And if you're trying to revive a franchise one last time, you want to reach the most people possible. In a sense, we already have Third Strike - Why would they make an extremely niche-based game when they can make just a niche-based one.

I'm sort of worried that Street Fighter IV could suffer the same wat as how criticized Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (being too similar to the predecessor Ocarina of Time). It's the fear that Street Fighter IV may be trying to emulate Street Fighter II (if they're gonna emulate anything, I'd rather let it be Street Fighter III).

Other than that, I agree with you, I'd want them to try new things but the idea of it being set between II and III doesn't help at all.

Edit: Apparently, Blogeek (who posted the other two screens and rumor/info) was threatened by Ziff Davis (the publisher of EGM, who had those stuff as part of their "13-page world exclusive" January edition) to close down his blog site... >_> Oh God.

Actually, between II and III doesn't mean they're not going to use III characters... it means they want to bring back the characters people are most familiar with for the fourth one. My guess, though, is that if they're using TS characters (which, IIRC, they haven't said they won't use, just that there was none to announce at present), there'll be something like four or five of them, Alex being a shoe-in.

The problem with Steeet Fighter III's cast is that there's too many freaks I guess. Still, the whole Street Fighter EX's cast is just terrible IMO.

For the records, there WERE "auto-combos" in 3S, so to speak. MOST of the cast had them. They weren't nearly as long as the stuff you'd see in UMK3 or whatever, but target chain combos were there(Ibuki arguably had the most).

I'm also upset that parrying is gone too. Parrying was an essential double-edged sword in 3S in which it made the game random, but also made incredibly difficult matchups actually winnable. For example, Chun-Li vs Hugo is already hard enough, but without parries it'd just be downright impossible.

Just read the article, good read but the images does "looks like arse". It's only 2% complete so I'm not worried about it for now.

Ibuki, but that's all I can recall and that's not even "cinematic". I remember someone claiming Street Fighter IV's to be like Naruto/DragonBall Z, so...

Okay, lemme break it down a bit further. Chun-Li has some of the quickest pokes in the game that also carry a lot of almost unfair priority. She can outzone Hugo and also outpoke him. Anything he tries when he gets within poking distance, she can just get him with HP, b.HP, MP, cr.MP, cr.LK, or cr.MK. If he tries to cr.MK her, she can just f.HK over and hit him while ducking, and get a free SA2 link in the process. The most Hugo can do is try and Palm(QCB+P) her pokes, which is hard because if he times it wrong, she can just outpoke THAT with b.HP xx SA2. This would basically be Chun vs Zangief in Super Turbo all over again. The only thing Hugo would have going for him is if he manages to block an SA2, and right before the last kick he can just buffer into 720.

Now, if you include parries, this matchup is still difficult as she still has nearly all advantages over Hugo on paper, but at the very least Hugo can parry for a 360 or 720. Chun takes damage pretty bad, so a good Hugo could easily turn the tables with a parry or three. Here's a shining example, an old match video featuring Umezono's Chun vs Hayao's Hugo:

The way I read the stuff, Ultra combos sound more and more like Ranbus. You can't exactly make ultra camera spins in Dudley's punch chains, as that'd just disorient the player.

The loss of the parry system is bad, too, but we'll have to see what replaces it.

Anyone who says it looks shit is obviously mentally ill. Or blind.

I've seen worse games in my time.

For the record, I'm a fan of retro stuff. Couldn't give a shite if someone is slagging it off to be fair. 'Cause I'll buy it. Like I'm gonna' lose sleep over the opinions of a bunch of randoms. I'll make my own decisions, I-thang-yew.

Kind of reminds me of Garouden Breakblow for PS2. But, uh. Brighter. And more cartoon-like.

The weird, fucked up reaction when Ryu gets hit is proper funny.

It looks German.

She was supposed be in a 3D fighting game before it was canned and she did appear in SFA3 for the PSP....

Ingrid won't be in SF4....though you can still hope if they're gonna put her in the console versions.

I'm starting to enjoy how SF4's been looking, to be honest. I love the new character Seth(I just hope he's playable), and they've definitely been tweaking the characters and graphics as the location tests go on. I can't wait for the arcade release this Summer.

If we had our way, we'd try to stuff every possible character from the Street Fighter universe in this game, but that'd just be too overwhelming for the general public IMO.
SF4 is trying to revive the old fanbase and introduce next-gen gamers to the series.
We all have our personal favorites and, with any luck, SF4's success may bring about future releases....
Here's hoping for SF characters both old and new to appear in future releases....

RIIIIIISE FROM YOUR GRAAAAAVE

I played Street Fighter IV today at the bus station near my school(it's multi-leveled, and the arcade is on the 7th floor or so). Here are my initial thoughts:

- The game looks pretty....I guess....., but the movements feel a lot closer to Super Turbo and the Alpha games, which gives it a weird and unnatural flow to it, especially compared to 3rd Strike.

- The initial presentation doesn't feel as dynamic as the latest games out there, especially compared to Tekken and Virtua Fighter. It's just...I dunno, it's just there.

- The gameplay in general feels a bit like the old SF2 games in terms of old tricks, traps, zoning and strategies, but this time with the Focus Attack function. It doesn't exactly make the game super-rushdown friendly or anything, but it does make for some neat juggles and combos via Focus Dash-Cancelling(Dashing during a Focus Attack charge to cancel it). I haven't played through the game enough today, but it's a promising new feature.

Overall, my first impressions is that this game could've been better. It feels a bit rushed, but hopefully they'll patch it up with revisions like Virtua Fighter and whatnot. I'm currently playing Crimson Viper, but I have no clue how to play her, heh. Hopefully I can get better with her.
