All I have to ask: why did it take you so long? Wasn't it so obvious from the beginning? Like, before the trial, even?

Yeah, but imagine remembering dying. That's got to suck. It's just more of the "imagine getting that right before she was killed off" sorta thing. And yeah, that's part of what made me happy: the thought that Ibuki isn't dead, and will come back- precisely for those reasons you mentioned. Actually, that's been something I've been professing myself in conversations about the game.

It'd be easy, since if Souda could build Monobear, he could build an anti-coma device.

Okay, so here's a question for those of you who think that DR1 could have been better. What changes would you make to the existing story? In other words, while trying to stay relatively close to what we already have, how would you go about improving on it? (Try to be specific, as general improvements such as making the mysteries more difficult are already kind of obvious)

Spoiler: First Victim/Killer
One change I would make is having Maizono's dying message not be so blindingly obvious to anyone who speaks English, or at the very least, pull an Ace Attorney and have the message be a red herring.

There are definitely other changes, but I can't think of them at the moment. I'll come back later.

Spoiler: DR1
I never got that gut-punching thing. Why? Well I didn't talk to Chihiro all that often. I got that scene after finishing the LP and doing some more Freetime events. I still think it's dumb that Chihiro asked for help - he can start working out just fine on his own, no need to get anyone else to "help" him.

Make it like the Beta version of the game: Distrust! Did you read about it? The character designs were a bit more subdued, so they were more realistic and relateable and not just obvious cartoons with exaggerated designs because Ha ha, that's funny. The art style was also less poppy-bright colors, giving the game a more mature feeling, too!

Also, the game mechanics! OmG, it was AWESOME! They gave Naegi/The Protagonist some dialogue options that actually mattered. Depending on how he reacted to things or talked to other people, it would've changed how he reacted to the next murder and the next and even WHO died...! The atmosphere in the place was so great, it really felt like a claustrophobic school where something terrible happened. And that mechanic, it would've opened up different paths, probably different endings and give the game the proper reward for replaying it and... YOU HAVE ANY IDEA HOW FUCKING AWESOME THAT GAME WOULD'VE BEEN!?

But no... we get... Haha funny crap... and no sense in replaying the game except for Freetime Events which don't change much...

Spoiler: Regarding that First Victim Spoiler
Aaaaarrrrrrrrrgh! I would've REMOVED that thing! It's so ANNOYING to have that! Didn't ANYONE read Hercule Poirot or Death On The Nile? He flat out MAKES FUN of that STUPID dying message crap. If even a detective, who was written during the first World War, finds it DUMB, WHY KEEP USING IT!?

Yes, I am also fucking annoyed when AA pulls this crap. Stop pulling this crap, NOBODY buys it anymore.

I think if the game wasn't so over the top it would be more enjoyable, at least to me. I have nothing against some of the weird talents - like Chihiro being a great programmer, which can be done and happen. Maybe even Junko being the ultimate model, or at least a very popular one. But Biker Gang leader? Pop Idol? How are those talents? Those are more, like, job titles. Or at the very least sound like them.

There are two things I don't like in talents: One is if it's something that a high schooler just couldn't be. (This applies mostly to fanmade stuff... It doesn't seem to bad in the canon games.) For instance, if you had SHSL Politican, or SHSL Attorney... that's just not going to happen. The other is if the level of their talent extends beyond reality of anyone. The biggest example I can think of is Chihiro. Chihiro is able to make Alter Ego, a fully-functional and self-aware AI that can learn and has its own thoughts and volition, on some dusty old laptop. And it takes a few days. That's beyond the level of programming anyone could ever hope to accomplish... If they have a level of talent that's beyond what a high schooler could ever get, but would still be possible with enough years of experience, that's one thing, but I really don't like it when they just blow reality out of the water...

Well, not to mention, I can't really see how being the Ultimate Biker Gang Leader is supposed to help get someone into school. I wouldn't mind if some of these "ultimate talents" were something that the students happened to have in addition to however they got into the school, but I can't see why a school would choose its students based on some of these titles.

Workable/Semi-Workable
Ultimate Affluent Progeny: I can see this working, if for no other reason than it could mean he bought his way in.
Ultimate Moral Compass: Makes enough sense, especially if the school is concerned with having well behaved students.
Ultimate Lucky Student: By its very nature, it gets a free pass since it's supposed to go to a randomly selected student.
Ultimate Baseball Star: Sports scholarship, anyone?
Ultimate Swimming Pro: Same as above.
Ultimate Martial Artist: Same as above.
Ultimate Programmer: This skill sounds like something a school would want to help nurture, so it works.
Ultimate Writing Prodigy: Again, this sounds like a skill a school would want to help nurture.

Makes no flipping sense
Ultimate Biker Gang Leader: How does this get someone into a school? Not to mention, it kind of contradicts the point of having an Ultimate Moral Compass.
Ultimate Fanfic Creator: Might fall under a similar category as Writing Prodigy, but fanfics aren't exactly a lucrative endeavor. Needs a little bit more justification.
Ultimate Clairvoyant: What. (That's right, this one doesn't even deserve a question mark)
Ultimate Pop Sensation: I can't think of a good justification for this one, although I suppose it's one of the more passable ones for this section. Still doesn't quite work though.
Ultimate Gambler: Are you kidding me? I could maybe see this working if she had bought a lottery ticket to get into the school, but that would overlap with Naegi's "skill."
Ultimate Fashionista: Uhh, I don't see how being fashionable or even being a supermodel is supposed to help a school decide to let you become a student.

Spoiler: Ultimate ???
Ultimate Detective: I'm kind of torn on this one. On the one hand, it can be a pretty useful skill. On the other hand, I'm not sure if it's the kind of skill a high school would be helping with.
Ultimate Soldier: Perhaps it could work if it was like an ROTC program or the like, but it's debatable.

I think it is generally safe to say that it was afterwords, but I can't think of anything to directly contradict the thought process that it had happened beforehand. :adrian:

Even if Alter Ego was created beforehand, it's still leaps and bounds ahead of realistic AI for anyone to make, let alone a high-schooler.

I just realized why Junko bothered preserving the bodies. Well, retroactively, as the case may be given that this could've been originally a standalone game.

I don't mind the outrageous talents at all, in fact, I think it has great potential for murder mysteries (I always love me some fair puzzle plot mysteries with special powers etc). I only wish these talents were of more importance to the mystery plots... In some cases (like DR1-1 for a very obvious example), these talents are of importance in identifying the murderer, but more often it could have been anyone.

Edit: oh, and for how DR1 could have been better: I think the biggest problem with DR1's mysteries is the information flow to the player. All important hints and pieces of evidence are acquired in the investigation mode, which makes it possible to read the complete plot, including twists even before you take a step in the trial. I am not talking about guessing here, because any fool can guess and have hindsight bias help. I mean reading the exact path the script writer wanted you to walk while solving the mystery, based on the information and the evidence presented. The problem was that you already got everything very early, so the trials often felt too slow to get to the point. SDR2 was a great improvement, because a lot of information was withheld from you until in the trial, which meant you couldn't actually build a complete case until in the trial (like in AA). (sure, you could guess, but again, that is not what I'm talking about and definitely not the way I think one should read a detective story)..

I disagree about SDR2. It was an improvement from DR1... but you didn't need to wait until the trial to build your case. I think the difference is that in DR1, the info/solution tended to be obvious/right there, whereas in SDR2 you did actually need to look around and search for it a bit.

Spoiler: DR1 final chapter
Does anyone have any clue why Junko needed sixteen meat lockers? Considering that Jin Kirigiri was a pile of bones being stored in a gift box, he wasn't exactly in need of cold storage. So that leaves sixteen lockers for the sixteen students. But who puts the sixteenth student in a locker? Is there a seventeenth student we don't know about?

Note that if they explain this in SDR2, that's all I need to know. If there is no explanation though, I would like to hear any non-spoiler justifications.

Spoiler: DR IF thoughts
Seeing Mukuro being badass was cool
Seeing Mukuro turn into a simpering mess every time Junko talked to her was very much the opposite of cool

Also kind of disappointed at how short and simple IF was, and how the ending movie was just that clip of the door opening for everyone from the first game
I know it was a novel but still, a few sprites and/or voice clips would have been nice

I know that for DR & SDR2, Spike(-Chunsoft)'s official stance on it is that they only condone LPs up until the first chapter and people on NicoNico stick to that; I can imagine that Spike-Chunsoft might have asked the same for the new game.

I personally dislike the heavy emphasis on Mukuro. I didn't care for her in DR, and I didn't have any feelings of wanting to know more about her - she's Junko's sister and did whatever Junko told her. Done. That's all I need to know, I don't need to know a reason why she does so.

They did! Someone on Twitch has been streaming the game nearly non-stop, though. So best to put those spoiler hats on now. :yogi:

I've played through the prologue and first chapter. It's good so far! But as a holdover from it's roots as a VN(esque), there's a lot of dialogue/cutscenes. Enough that it disrupts the flow of the TPS part of the game a bit, honestly.

Pretty much everything except incidental examination dialogue is voiced, which is nice.
