(Ocarina of time aged fine, at least with that remake the gameplay did)

Franzise is right though, I still had a good time with Persona 3, but like many others I came from 4 to 3 so the mechanical problems were just highlighted to me. Persona 3 made a great beta for Persona 4 which I guess means that hopefully Persona 5 will be an even more refined product.

I really am surprised as to how some people can prefer this game over the fourth.

The voice acting is still just bland, and the characters just drop exposition on you at every turn. Akihiro has basically only mentioned training and once feeling powerless, which probably means someone close to him died, Junpei still looks like a 30-something truck driver and has the most nasal voice ever, and I can't even remember the names of the two women.

Sorry, I don't mean to whine, I'm just incredibly surprised by the difference in overall quality, particularly the writing and pacing.

A~nd that pretty much sums up the problems I had in the LP. (And I was kind enough to cut out all the grinding I did - partly cause I didn't want to bore the viewers with walking around the Tartarus every other freaking day and also cause, at first, my recording lagged during the Tartarus and in-battle moments)

I AM tempted to play P3P again, just to try to max all the Social Links - didn't do it in the LP cause I didn't care and also cause I was busy increasing parameters. But when I think of the bore-fest ahead of me to do that... I think I also just looked up images of Orpheus Thelos.

By the way, are you watching a P3 or P3P version?

But really, don't be too hard on P3, guys; it was fairly revolutionary at the time and helped Atlus learn what didn't work out too well so they could make P4 better.

Ocarina of Time was revolutionary when it originally came out; has it aged well to this date? No. (At least not for me) As dullahan says, the game didn't age well. Even looking at the Tales of Symphonia Unisonant that came out, one reviewer - who didn't play the original release - said the dubbing is pretty old-school and not up to today's standards. Which I agree with, it was a good dub job in 2003 when it originally came out, but they didn't really update the game much. (One reason I'm not getting it, the other is that it contains Knight of Ratatosk and that didn't get changed a lot, either - and that game needed some drastic changes)

It's called Persona 3 FES. Are the stories different?

And I'm afraid I'm going to have to disagree with you on Ocarina of Time. I'm not saying it has aged perfectly, but going into a Zelda game you expect puzzles, great music and some nice action. Going into an RPG you usually expect a tight story and an immersive world which keeps you hooked; the writing is much more vital in an RPG than in practically any other genre. Taking that into account, I can say that while I wish Ocarina of Time had a slightly less cliché story (like Majora's Mask), and that the controls were more up to date, it still delivers high-quality entertainment and a true Zelda experience. Persona 3's writing and pacing make it difficult for me to be interested, and I can even skip the grindfests! Not to mention Ocarina of Time came out eight years earlier than Persona 3.

One of the few games that have aged pretty much flawlessly is Heroes of Might and Magic 3...but that's very off topic.

So Persona 5 comes out next year in the west to the Playstation 3? Let's hope my little brother goes through with his plans to buy that console, then.

No, the story is the same. Difference in P3P is mostly game mechanical things, taking things from P4 into it. For example, you have now the option to directly control your party members, which helps tremendously. Also the Once More was altered to, again, be more like P4. P3P also gives the option to play as a Girl - which, aside from changed Social Links, doesn't alter the story very much... except for one event, but that still doesn't alter it a lot. Barely makes a difference.

That's okay. I'm just saying, for me Ocarina didn't age very well. Quite frankly, I have the same problem with Ocarina nowadays - even with the 3DS remake - as I did with the original N64/GC version. It bores me to play the game. Nothing in Ocarina really gripped me when I was 8 years old and now that I'm almost 24, it still doesn't grip me. Sure it was revolutionary for its time. But when you hold it up to today's Zelda games, I can honestly say that I enjoy those a whole lot more than Ocarina. Even Twilight Princess, made to be practically Ocarina of Time Version 2.0, was more entertaining.

I'm not entirely sure what to think of P5... I mean, all I saw was that "You are Slave. Want emancipation?" thing which... aside from being horrible grammar (I know it's a Japanese company, but couldn't they have tried to get someone who knows English properly to write that short sentence?) it tells me nothing. I might buy it, although I do have my expectations... I want the peppy, memorable music from P4 alongside with the overall likeable characters. Although if we have romantic interest social links... I hope I at least have an option to have a semi-crush on a same-sex social link. It'd be interesting and entertaning. (Especially with Yosuke in P4, by God, that kid's lines seemed to ooze innuendos for Narukami)
And I just have to mention this about P4...

Spoiler: P4 - Naoto and Kanji
Why do people think Kanji is somehow gay cause he was slightly attracted to Naoto before it was known she was a girl? Okay, for one, Naoto being a girl? Not very shocking. It's actually very badly hidden. Her English VA already sounded like a Woman-Trying-To-Sound-Like-A-Man, which is a huge giveaway. Romi Park had it slightly better, she's known to voice young men... but it was still so obvious.
Also, just cause Kanji was attracted to Naoto doesn't make him gay. It was pure, natural instinct that he was attracted to Naoto. Hormones/Pheromones and all, they can't hide gender and such. Then again, maybe people are beating the dead Kanji-is-gay horse because... I dunno, they think gays are funny?

Apparently Persona 5 will deal with the theme of people's discontent with their lives, breaking free from shackles of everyday life and so on. The freedom seems to be on a more personal level than anything else. Hadn't this been a high school setting, I'd have expected salarymen in spades, but I guess the age of the cast means we'll be seeing more people like Yukiko.

It does sound like an interesting theme to explore, but I do want to know how personae are connected to that (aside from having the thrill of your life beating up monsters with your Pokémon), and whether or not this will be connected to Persona 4: Arena.

Spoiler:
As for Kanji, I just assumed he was bisexual but had a hard time accepting that fact. And I agree with you on Naoto's voice being a dead giveaway, too bad they didn't use the English voice actress from the anime; while not perfect, she sounded a lot more like a guy.

Hm, I'd probably have gone for Naoto too, if I were part of that group. Something about the strong, mysterious type with the shy, gooey center is very appealing to me. I wonder if that's some absurd fetish...

More Yukikos, whose ENTIRE PROBLEM could've been solved by opening her damn mouth for FIVE SECONDS to her own mother?! Jeez fuck, No! Please, no! That's the whole reason I dislike Yukiko's Social Link and her reason for having a shadow!

As for Naoto... it really was not a big shock. As for Kanji, I go with what he said after his Shadow was fought. He's not gay. His problem is more that he is afraid of being rejected for his feminine hobbies of sewing and art. Just cause he has a hobby like that doesn't make him gay, it's just a hobby. (It's like a girl whose hobby is... mud-wrestling. Or any other male hobby.)

For the girls... the only one I romantically dated in P4 was Rise. I just like her. Chie is cool, but really just friend material for me. I HATE going the romantic route for Naoto because I have to treat her like a fragile little WHIMP of a girl, which is completely against what she actually is. (Yes she's a girl, but that doesn't mean they have to force me to treat her like one that can't do anything for herself and needs a big, strong man to protect her) Yukiko... *sigh* I already said I dislike her Social Link...
And I only got into a relationship with Ai once, although I went the friend route. And I hate her Social Link, too! Her reason for acting like a bitch is dumb and the options I get during her social link are stupid. Why can't I yell at her for wanting to kill herself cause one guy doesn't like her? Why can't I yell at her for acting like a bitch and thinking it's a good reaction to being bullied. (You don't act like a bitch if you're bullied in the past, you fight back and that's it) And why HELL do I not get an option when she says "Let's break up" for me to answer "Good riddance. Have a nice life."

That's pretty much the theme of....well all Persona so I don't really consider them to have said anything particularly strong regarding the themes of Persona 5.

Spoiler: My Reasoning Spoilers for Persona 3
People are discontent with life and all that ill will harbours and manifests as a god-like being that will end the world and their suffering.

Spoiler: Likewise for Persona 4
People are discontent with their lives as they feel they can't live the way they truly want to and so those repressed feelings manifest as some crazy shadow and try to kill the original owner.

Just how it's always been to me.

Spoiler: Regarding Kanji's sexuality
I'd say he was just more sexually confused at that point, dumb as Naoto's 'boy' disguise is it was generally accepted and believed by most of the cast. The fact it's an incredibly feminine boy may have contributed to Kanji's attraction, as he was certainly interested in her once she stopped shunning her gender.

Regarding his Shadow I don't think it's 'proof' Kanji was gay, like Yosuke (I think) said it's just his emotions running haywire. Kanji had stereotypically feminine hobbies and feared it made him less manly, more womanly in the eyes of everyone. Combine this with his dislike of girls (who teased him about this) and it extrapolated into his fear that he was this 'crazy camp' Shadow creature.

According to this and this, people mostly want a gay character to be an actual well written character outside of simply using gay as a joke. I mostly agree with Pierre's post, I don't think Kanji is gay, but for some people, Kanji not being gay is "less interesting".

Kanji is an okay character, whether I look at him as gay or straight. He's a good friend, kind of a rough guy - and he holds his mother dear. That's very sweet, but not to the extent that I'd make fun of him or call him gay for that. Just means that he likes his mother and respects her. That's wonderful.

And that's part of the problem with equality these days. It's great that minorities are being treated with more respect and handled thoughtfully these days but the needle of equality can swing too far at times. I know a number of friends who will just back anything that is in favour of LGBT issues whether or not the quality of the actual thing is good. The latest Eurovision winner did pretty well and was a drag act, my friends were screaming their heads off in support. The song was ok to me, good voice, nothing legendary. My friends kept making comments about how "I bet that's a record in points!" until another friend with an iphone brought down the brutal truth (Fairytale by Alexander Rybek scored something absurd).

Point is 'gay' 'lesbian' 'bi' 'drag' 'transgender' shouldn't be labels that can be slapped onto something to 'boost' the quality of it. Kanji's character should be just as interesting whether or not he's gay or bi or whatever. It was the dilemma that was the interesting part, whether or not it's given a definite conclusion doesn't make him a better or worse character.

I don't think what made Kanji a good character was the fact that he was homosexual or bisexual or whatever, but the struggles he had and how he faced them, since it was done in a genuinely good and tasteful manner. Well, that and he's also hilarious.

So uh, about Persona 5, what DO you hope it'll be about? Arena left us hanging, but it did show us that former playable characters were still hard at work and that there's still a lot of supernatural stuff going on. Personally, after growing so attached to Persona 4, I wouldn't mind seeing the investigation team at least play some sort of supportive role (and judging by how much Atlus seems to be aware of the game's popularity, that seems like a plausible scenario).

Let's just hope the kids can graduate high school properly.

Hmmm I'm hoping they move off the old cast, and I imagine they will do, I love the Persona 4 crew but I hope they can pull something new without needing them as a crutch, especially since they are all developed characters.

I can't really say what themes will be tackled as Persona pretty much covers such a wide range of them.

While I doubt they will, I think it'd be interesting to see if they took Persona 5 with older protagonists. Perhaps a businessman or something who awakens to his powers and his allies are his colleagues or something and it turns out the company they work for is up to some nefarious things that no one is aware of (kind of like the Kirijo group I suppose).

You are right. I don't want them to be a crutch, but I don't want them to disappear forever. However, I just found out that there's a second Arena game coming, so that particular story will probably be concluded there. And there's another animation coming soon, too. Wow, they're really milking that game, aren't they?

I'm sorry to disappoint you, but I believe that one of the few things that has been confirmed for Persona 5 is that it'll be set in a high school because Japan.

I wouldn't mind having a 20+ year old party of protagonists. I'm a bit sick of high schoolers and how they make some things seem bigger than they actually are. Or maybe a 19 year old who grows older as the game goes on. Just someone who has graduated from school. Although if it has to be someone in high school, I want them to be third-years, 18 years old, and being quieter in school and similar.

Something more mature. Not necessarily dark, but something more serious. Much as I love Persona 4, I want a bit more serious going on when I'm playing. Also, I want good pacing. P3 had terrible pacing throughout. P4 had some pacing problems *coughoctobercough* but improved. I want P5 to have the pacing that gives me excitement, with a short down time before gripping me again.

And as said before, at least an option to maybe have a romance going on with someone of the same sex.
I doubt it's gonna happen, but it'd be nice to have.
As for the P4 crew... eh, maybe give them a background cameo, like seeing someone who looks like Yukiko greeting customers to an inn, but not making them somehow more prominent than they should be.

Yeah Arena 2 will probably wrap up the Investigation Team's story.

Though I doubt they could just include an important Persona-user from a previous game in 5 and reduce them to just a cameo. Chie wants to be a police officer I believe, they might be able to pull off her as fulfilling the same role as the Cop in P3. The one who sells you weapons because Chie knows there really is more going on behind the scenes.

There'd be an outcry if they were just made to be some background NPC or something though.

Yupp, I think pretty much agree. Having the Investigation Team's story end in a fairly strange spin-off doesn't sit well with me, but it's better than them imposing on Persona 5's story (at least too much, I'm fine with a cameo or two).

It's so weird that Naoto seems to have the "main" story arc in Arena, and Yu is sitting on the sidelines. One has to wonder if it's because Naoto joined the team fairly late in Persona 4.

Does she? I never really got that feeling but I never played her story in Arena, everyone seems to go through the same events like most fighting games. I'd say the reason she gets some focus (I think she has a manga dedicated to her) is because she's more 'independent' than the other investigation team being a prodigy detective and all. More for her character to work with solving mysterious cases and the like.

No, she gets the most focus because, supposedly, she has the biggest boobs out of the group.

I hate the fact that same-sex relationships for a game coming out in the west doesn't fly. That is such fucking bullshit. 'course, the only SS relationship I'd ever do would be the girls one. (MinakoXAigis/Mitsuru ftw)

Anyway, how 'bout that Ultimax, huh? HUH? Eh...... :sadshoe:

I didn't like P4 Arena (which seemed to focus more on Persona 3 characters' advancement than the P4 ones) and I don't think I'll like the next one. Except for the hilarity that I can beat the everloving shit out of Yukari.

Also, I don't think the West WOULD mind that much if a same-sex option were available.
I'm more thinking that Japan would heavily frown upon it.

Wow...you REALLY don't like Yukari...I mean, she can be a bitch at times, but I think she's pretty cool most of the time. Also, Michelle Ruff.

Also, I think the west WOULD mind, believe me, I live there.

Some of the West would mind, more would care if it was left out. Take the Tomodachi Life incident recently, a silly little life sim with Mii's had support for heterosexual romances but not homosexual ones and the West was furious about it.

Also no I totally get where Cat is coming from, there is not enough fists in the face that can fix Yukari's evil. Can damned well try though. Would be hilarious if they made her the default 'punching bag' in Practice mode.

No. Even if her voice is nice, which it isn't - I recently learned that even her Japanese voice actress voiced Ran from GALS! (which I like) but also served as the voice for Zelda in Skyward Sword (oh how pointless that character is) so that's even worse - she's a terrible human. She acts cold and oversensitive to stuff that she shouldn't be sensitive about. I help her multiple times throughout her Social Link, in both Male and Female, I even go so far as to save her from being beaten up - if not raped - and do I get a simple Thank You from her? NO! Bitch yells at me for helping her, like I should've just let her get beaten and raped. Considering her reaction, I think I should've. Or even getting her off the damn street when she was about to get run over by a car, I help her and her first reaction is to yell at me to freaking leave her alone.
Upside, at that point, she did give me a Thanks.

Her relationship with her mother is dumb because, even if she lost her father when she was young, she's older now and I think she would've realized by now that, if her father was so freaking great as she thinks he was, he would've been happy knowing that his wife was gonna be happy with another man. She acts like a total child and like she expects her mom to do nothing but grieve and wallow in her tears for the rest of her life because her husband has been dead for 10 years.

And throughout the game, she starts scenes and makes them revolve around her. Finding out that the whole Shadow thing started 10 years ago? Screw that, Yukari is making this about her and her father. Runs off dramatically and I am forced to follow her, when I go along the route of "Let her be alone and calm down, running after her will only make her more angry" in terms of thinking. When the President dies? Instead of properly trying to comfort his daughter, Yukari makes it about how her father died ten years ago. Yeah, honey, even if it may still hurt, you can't approach someone who JUST lost their father compared to your current feelings of what happened TEN YEARS ago.

Not to mention that she's considered the prettiest in school, which she isn't. I think Mitsuru is prettier. Or even Rio, the female route's Chariot Arcana, is prettier than Yukari. Oh my God and Michelle Ruff voiced Sia from Rune Factory 3, this is just getting worse...!

If I ever do decide to get P4AU, I might be willing to give Yukari another chance at not being a horrible person. Unless Atlus tries too hard and pushes her in our faces trying to get us to like her, I'll be open to try to find something about her that I can respect.
Of course, this will all just turn out to be wishful thinking and I'll just end up using her as a punching bag.

Also Builder, Yukari refuses to even talk to you in a social link unless you have max charm (Read: The most popular kid in school) so think about how many other people she must shun.

She's also constantly biting at Mitsuru's heels for being 'better' than her and being especially bitchy and jealous towards her. Then she gets even worse in the answer where she gets horribly selfish and breaks down.

Okay, that's going a little far...

...and I can agree that Mitsuru is pretty...and Rio, too, which leads me to wonder why everyone thinks Yukari is prettier...maybe it's because Mitsuru is a senior? I'unno.

@Pierre:

Yeah, she's a right bitch in The Answer towards Aigis. Of course, that whole section was bullshit, what group of friends decides to beat the shit out of eachother instead of coming to a decision.

Well, regardless of what any of you say, I like Yukari. Not as much as Mitsuru, Rio, Aigis or Elizabeth, though.

Spoiler: we should probably spoiler this
A group of friends that contains Yukari, that's what. She was the only one who actually wanted use the key to see the protagonist again, and Mitsuru decides to side with Yukari simply because of that moment in November, even knowing what her actions will lead to.

Spoiler: The Answer
I'll point out that, THAT problematic part of The Answer is actually initiated BY Yukari. Ken and Akihiko make the smart decision, Junpei and Aigis are uncertain. Koromaru is a dog and doesn't care, Metis just goes along with whatever Aigis says.

Yukari is the first one to say "I'll f*&!ing kill you for that key!"

I thought that's what Persona 4 Arena was about. Then again, I've only played it for fun, not for the story.
On April 3, 2016, Court Records Forums experienced a miracle upon that day.

Spoiler: Spoiler of the story?
Actually they try to talk to each other but Labrys shadow, with her illusionary powers, confuse everyone and change what the characters hears and probably their reactions when they encounter someone, so they end up to fight each other.

Please don't hit me...

What little from the story I played, because that is just too much text for me in a fighting game, everybody's semi-forced taking part in a tournament. They don't want to fight, but the person they meet ends up saying or hearing things that hurt them and they fight. Post-fight, they have the HILARIOUS conversations of what the other actually heard (Hey, I have nothing against Yosuke having a nurse-fetish, I have my butler-fetish stuff) then you move on, to repeat the previous step... Joybunnies.

Basically

Spoiler: Persona 4 Arena
Labrys a shadow-suppression weapon was made to fight other models of herself over and over until she was proven the strongest. Eventually as the scientists who created her hoped, she starts to develop a personality which means she might be able to manifest a Persona making her a more powerful weapon. Eventually along with the other surviving models they start to bond in their downtime but eventually she has to kill her friends and prove herself the strongest. They try and wipe her memory satisfied that she was the strongest and Labrys snaps and bursts free of the lab-prison with her Persona. She's later captured and put in containment.

Later on someone puts Labrys in the TV world where her shadow emerges. Her shadow arranges the tournament to appear on the midnight channel to bait the Investigation Team into...investigating. The game is essentially set in her Shadow Dungeon and friends are made to fight friends in order to re-enact the pain Labrys suffered. She has the power to manipulate the senses so she makes people say strange things that would provoke fights.

Spoiler: Since we're still talking about Labrys
Pointless? Like Marie? I kinda fail to see how. Marie was a nice (opinion pending) little extra in an already complete package. Labrys is the centre of a new plot. She's also not coming from nearly nowhere, it's already established that Aigis is the 7th Generation in Anti-Shadow Suppression Weapons so there's clearly been several models made by the Kirijo group before.

Also yeah...being a super fighting robot amongst a cast of humans does make you special, but hey characters can be 'special' what's important is that they ain't perfect.

I dunno maybe my 'Sue Sensor' is off but I don't think your criticisms are especially fair or accurate.

Spoiler: Persona 4 Arena - Labrys
Point is that she is the center of the plot. They should do a proper spin-off then, not slap the Persona 4 title on it, because if I see Persona 4 in the title, I go in to play it for the Persona 4 story or characters - not for some shadow thing that was never heard of before and will probably never be mentioned again outside of that game. Bad enough that Persona 4 Arena ALREADY seemed to focus more on explaining about the Persona 3 characters and what they are doing now than the Persona 4 cast. What's next, Persona Q is actually gonna be talking about what the P4 cast does while the P3 ones are more there for the sake of fanservice? Gimme a break.

Marie was pointless because she was basically part of a deity, so that's already a giant Mary Sue factor, and as said, she is nothing but filler. So she's pointless to put into the game, since she adds nothing to the story itself. If he did, I might not mind so much. But she doesn't, so I see no point in her existing. Also, becoming the weather lady at the end of the game because she LITERALLY makes the weather. WOW!

You might wanna tag your post for Persona 4 Golden spoilers too if you are going to talk about Marie.

Spoiler: Persona 4 Arena
Yeah...she's arguably the villain of the plot but if I'm not much mistaken outside of her own story she doesn't really do a whole lot. There is plenty of the Persona 4 characters in the game and they do have plenty of interactions. The reason it feels like there's more to say about the Persona 3 people is because there IS more to say. Not a lot happens between one year of high school and another unless you are going into senior times. How much did you really thing would be new in the P4 crews life? On the other hand the P3 members featured had just left school and already worked with an organisation that investigated shadow phenomenon and had 2 years in the gap. There's plenty of room for them to do more interesting things, even then they don't interrupt the Investigation Team's story in most cases until well into the final moments of the game when everyone gets together for the finale.

We've argued about this before but crossover fighters are FANSERVICE games. At least they found a way of incorporating the Persona 3 cast into the plot instead of just leaving them as some kinda pointless inclusion.

Cat how much of Persona 4 Arena did you play/experience?

Also while we're on the subject:Supposedly Ken and Koromaru confirmed as a 'tag team' character.

To be perfectly honest, I forget... I'm on some chapter on Narukami's story. Stopped playing a good.. year ago? (I know I haven't played any P3 character story mode yet cause... I don't care about them. They weren't interesting in P3P, I doubt they are in this game) I might play the game again once I have HDMI cables because, damn it, seems that's the only way I can see the damn circles and not make it look like stupid buttons on my TV.

While I haven't been able to watch that much more of the Persona 3 walkthrough due to a test this friday, I'm still surprised I have yet to be given a reason to care about any of the characters. Sure, there have been some funny moments, but usually the characters are either just angsty or drop exposition, and the only one who doesn't sound bored reading his lines is Junpei. One has to wonder what kind of direction the actos received while recording for this game.

Also, is it just me, or is this game painfully predictable? I mean sure I managed to deduce the killer in Persona 4 pretty fast, but it was a rocky ride; here, pretty much everything happens according to what one would expect, from social links to story events to character development.

If Akihiro mentions training/getting stronger one more time, I'll have to scream into my pillow.

Please tell us your predictions. I am curious to know them.

Also, Persona 3 is about as predictable as Persona 4 was. And Persona 4 was very easy to figure out about the stuff in the background.

I'm not really sure you are entitled to say "This game features too much of X Y and Z" when so far as your experience goes you only gunned through a bit of Narukami's story. You don't even know what it's like to make such aggressive statements.

Aside from social links? Here are a few.

Spoiler:
The chairman being a villain.

Shinjo (or whatever his name was) and Akihiro's past and the former dying.

Killing the 12 shadows wouldn't stop the Dark Hour (well duh), although to be honest I expected it to be some sort of seal...maybe it was, I haven't gotten that far yet.

And to be even more obvious, that emo hippie and his best friend Skrillex are not dead, and they might die protecting the good guys.

I'm not pretending that this is anything special by any means, but so far nothing has really surprised me and things have been painfully predictable. The biggest offense are, as stated earlier, the characters; I simply don't care about anything going on when all they do is either whine or drop exposition. In Persona 4, you and your friends are all in the dark and try finding things out together; here, everyone knows more than you and fills you in when the plot demands it, which, coupled with stale writing and voice acting, makes the characters come across as standoffish.
