Well... that's lovely. I agree that video games are precious...

But come on now... Changing you behavior? Running away? The kid is not mentally sound.

While I object to the video games being the cause of the behaviour, WTF?

I find it funny it just advertises the game though. :lana:

Oi. Running away from home because your Xbox was taken away? Stupid.

I seriously hope once the kid goes back, that the family will TRY and ease him out of letting video games control his life. (Yeah, tiny chance of that.)

Ah yes... This has been big news where I live for a while now...

And how is "Running away from home because their XBOX and games were taken away from them" able to determine that the kid isn't "Mentally Sound"!? For a 13 year old, that actually sounds perfectly reasonable logic!... for a 13 year old, anyways.

You know, kind've like how if you deny an 8-year-old dessert they'll try to hold their breath until they die or something? I forget exactly what train of thought they use for that.

Oh, rest assured, i think the kid is STUPID for having done that... Here's a question though... ALMOST THREE WEEKS!? I'll be honest, If I had considered running from home, I'd probably be gone for 1 day... 3 tops... AND I'd go somewhere familiar... like a friend's house or something.

But 2+ Weeks... Either that kid is a HELL of an expert at hiding, or something happened to them.

It never ceases to amaze me how kids can get so engrossed in things like video games. I mean, come on; you don't even need a LIFE to know that you need to do everything in moderation.

Oh God, is this serious?

I'm 15, and even I'm not stupid enough to run away over something so trivial!

Then again, I also wouldn't undergo a personality change after starting to play a certain video game. In fact, I honestly doubt this kid did. :/

The sick and evil part of my brain says that Microsoft is only doing this so they can continue reaping revenue from this kid (game, accessory, and XBox live sales). The more rational part of me says they are trying to avoid the already bad publicity something like this can generate.

I'm not sure if Nintendo or Sony would do the same. We're talking about companies based in foreign countries. Who knows if the North American branch would consider forking over that kind of money to find a runaway teen.

Like someone pointed out earlier, the kid is probably going through puberty. That is the explanation for the changes, the parents were just looking at the video game as an excuse (reason, scapegoat). My friends got grounded from their games all the time, but they didn't run away. They would just play the system while their parents weren't at home. Of course, you couldn't get away with that on systems these days.

I hope they find the kid unharmed, it would be a shame to lose your child over something so trivial as a video game.

They're trying to avoid bad publicity. if they wanted to make a profit from this, they would've doubled the reward instead of matching it, to show they "Truly Care". Nintendo could probably double it regardless, since they have so much, and Sony... I kinda doubt it.

Man... I can't believe someone named their son "Crisp". (Had 2)

But then again, at least it's not some sort of really horrible name or anything that sounds ridiculous or anything of the like...

I feel sorry for the dad. He was only trying to be a good parent by exercising discipline on a misbehaving kid. I don't think it really mattered if the video game was the cause. If I misbehaved as a child, my parents would take away whatever is more important to me so that I learn my lesson. In Brandon' s case, the XBox makes sense. And the fact that the father had to indirectly apologize to the newscast for "causing his son to run away" like that is just wrong IMO. He did what any responsible parent should've done. The kid just blew things out of proportion, which I suppose is expected at that age, but still.

There's something wrong with the kid, and i think the parents are probably part of the reason.
And if that's the case of course the're gonna find a scapegoat, to turn the spotlight off of them. It was the same thing with all of those school shootings in the 1990's, blame guns, TV, trenchcoats, Goths, Games, and music but not the stupid shit for brains parents, bullies, and the schools who let the bullies do stuff to other kids. :zenitora:

I'm inclined to believe that the kid was less of a moron, if one at all, and more that he really had some serious issues that needed to be remedied that lead to his running away that had little direct involvement with the game console.

I cannot imagine how frustrating and sad this must be for the parents.

yeah, it's all over the local news. probably hypothermia.

I can't even bear to imagine how the father's feeling right now. When the kid announced that he was running away, his father actually helped him pack his bag and let him run, assuming the kid would be back in a few hours...

My family was discussing this a while ago. I pointed out to my mum's boyfriend that there's a huge difference between playing video games as a hobby and being addicted to video games. He told me that he doesn't see the difference -__-

Anyways, it's unfortunate that the boy died. I imagine it must be rather cold in Ontario during nights at this time of year, so it doesn't surprise me that he would've died if he didn't have proper shelter.

Depends on the thirteen-year-old in question. I do not plan to run away from home if somebody took an video game device away from me.

While I did laugh at the original topic; reading down brought my mood down also. I'm not overly surprised at the result; I was hoping he would return home, though. As a side-note; it strikes me as a little ironic that there was a Call of Duty advert right next to the article when I was reading it.

Just to note, it seems he didn't die from hypothermia, but from falling out of a tree. I'm guessing the impact from the fall would be what killed him, otherwise I can't exactly see how falling out of a tree would kill you (barring from landing on your head, of course). They don't know what he was doing in the tree to begin with, though considering he was in the woods, I guess he decided to sleep in the tree to avoid wild animals or people.
