I was searching for "all wireless connections" on my Wii,
and then, it found a connection named "linksys",
is this my computer or a mass-production computer around town?

or could it be a local Wi-Fi connection?

I just dont know...

But if it is okay to connect with it, I would really like to play Brawl/Animal Crossing/Pokemon with all of you!

EDIT: I'm sorry! I accidently posted this in "Wright law offices" when it should be in the "Police station".
EDIT 2: It was actually "linksys" not "syslink"... I made a typo.

I'd recommend checking your computer's router and see if it's under that name. If not, it's likely a nearby connection.

How do I check my computer's router name?

also, if its not my router's name...
how do I connect my Wii to a Wireless Dial-Up modem?

I suggest that you put your connection settings to your Wii manually (PIN-code etc.). When I tried to hook my Wii to the net automatically, it didn't find any connections.

okay. Here's a checklist of things to do in order to connect to the web with Wii.

1. Make sure the router is wireless (XD)
2. Make sure you have the username and password to the router (If you don't, ask the person who set up the router; if they don't know, call the appropriate tech support for the router, and reset the router. When you enter the info, make sure you write down the name of the router, username, password, and WEP key)
3. Once you have the username and password (but not the router's name or WEP key), open IE or Firefox or Safari, and go to http://192.168.1.1. This will bring you to a page that administers your router's settings. In order to reach it, you must input the username and password for the router.
4. Once you have the WEP key, go on your Wii, and search for a wireless connection. It will find the router (unless you're too far away from it (XD), and it will ask you for a password to enter the router. Generally if you have a good router, it will be the WEP key. if not, it will be the password from the username+password combo. Try both, and you'll be able to access the internet. I highly suggest a System Update on the Wii, unless you constantly buy new games (Which come with updates XD)

Hope this helps ^__^

Linksys is a very common wireless router. Its not the name of a computer part, or any program. I use one myself.

I can't believe I'm helping you right now...

The above poster is right.

I believe I use a Linksys too.

So you're fine.

It really doesn't matter if it isn't yours, as whoever owns it obviously doesn't bother to secure it. If you want to make sure it's yours, simply turn off your router and see if you can still connect.

I have turned off my router before, and it was still there.

Well that's pretty conclusive proof then it isn't yours! Maybe your router isn't wireless...? Or maybe it's got its SSID broadcast turned off?

I know my router is not on Nintendo's compatible with Wii wireless list.

Is it okay if I just connected to this not-mine router then?

Even though it's not secured, I believe it is still illegal. In the meantime you could purchase the wired dongle for the Wii and connect it to your router that way. Or get a new router...

OH NO.
I just connected it to that connection. D:

I even downloaded Nintendo Channel, and put settings on the Weather and News channels.

AM I GOING TO BE OKAY?

Technically it is not illegal, it's their fault for not securing their connection. If you were to decode the security and go in then, that would technically be illegal because it's a minor form of 'hacking' without their permission.

All you did was connect. There's nothing illegal about that. Unless they specifically asked you not to.

Though I would suggest talking to the people who own that router and asking if you could use it wirelessly. That would be the right thing to do if you wish to continue using it.

I don't recommend using the Wi-Fi USB Adapters, if that's what Mayhem is referring to. They heat up far too fast, and a few friends had theirs break down after a while.

It would have to be someone pretty close to you, like a house away. The Wii can't stretch too far.

I think the furthest connection my Wii (and laptop) could reach was two houses away, and it was an extremely weak connection.

Well, this connection is 4 bars strong.

I believe that's the strongest connection, so it's most likely one of your direct neighbors (And I mean the houses to your left or right, not across the street), though it COULD be a strong router near.

I can't say for the US but it is here in the UK as people have been arrested and prosecuted for leaching bandwidth even on unsecured connections.

Things get a might muddled when it comes to taking non-existent objects such as digital files and bandwidth. It isn't stealing but in the case of downloading illegal files that is copyright infringement instead.

No, not the WiFi adapter, I mean the Wii LAN adapter so you can connect a cable from the router into the back of the Wii. Or as I said, get yourself a new, better router!

Ah. Then I do recommend that. ESPECIALLY if the router is near the Wii.

Otherwise, if I may make a suggestion, get a Linksys Wireless Router like I've got. They're very reliable. XD

You know, I figured out about how to get the key from the 192.169.1.1 thing a while back, and I never used it on my Wii... (I used it for my 360 and DS... I need to go ahead and connect my Wii too!)

EDIT: And I MAY be wrong on it not being illegal for us, I was making a guess. Though it really shouldn't be illegal if the people are so ignorant not to secure their connections. =\ It's like an open invitation.

It's not a direct analogy, but if I left my car unlocked with the keys in the ignition it would still be illegal for you to enter it and drive it away without my permission. I guess that's how I see unsecured wireless connections. Needless to say I use WPA encryption and SSID broadcast off so most people are unaware of it for starters...

Honestly though, locking your car is something you should know to do.

And most routers (notably, Linksys) recommend you put an encryption key in, while setting it up, so if you choose not to, you KNOW that people will access it from afar, with or without your knowledge or consent.

I do believe that if people purposefully avoid charges by doing so, then they should get prosecuted. But if you're stopping to check e-mail, or check a website for a minute, it shouldn't be a problem.

How is your router not compatable?
I can't remember the error number off the top of my head, but you may be unable to connect to your own router because of a firewall in place on your router. Ask whoever maintains the router if that is the case.

As for your current situation, don't make a habit of using the linksys router. Ask around and see if you can use the wi-fi. Never hurts to ask.
