Obesity experts today slammed Nintendo after its Wii Fit game told a 10-year-old girl she was fat.

They fear the game could damage children's body image and called on the company to warn parents it is not suitable for their offspring.
The £69 game, which sold out within hours when it went on sale in Britain last month, uses an electronic "balance board" to monitor a player's weight.

Once the player has entered their height, the game uses BMI, a measure of body fat based on an adult's height and weight, to calculate their level of obesity, placing them in categories such as "underweight" and "fat".

Players can then be guided through yoga exercises or play games to improve their balance.

However, a father from the South-East spoke today of the embarrassment when his stepdaughter played the game and was labelled fat.
"She is a perfectly healthy, 4ft 9in tall 10-year-old who swims, dances and weighs only six stone," said the father, who did not want to be named for fear of embarrassing the girl further.

"She is solidly built but not fat. She was devastated to be called fat and we had to work hard to convince her she isn't.
"I know it is just a game but we already have to worry about young girls starving themselves to look like magazine models and now we have a game that tells them they're fat. This to me is very worrying."

Tam Fry of the National Obesity Forum called for children to be banned from playing the game, claiming the BMI measurement was misleading.

"I'm absolutely aghast that children are being told they are fat," he said.
"BMI is far from perfect but with children it simply should not be used.

"A child's BMI can change every month and it is perfectly possible for a child to be stocky, yet still very fit.
"I would be very concerned if children were using this game and I believe it should carry a warning for parents."
Nintendo said today it would not be placing a warning on the game.

A spokesman said: "Nintendo would like to apologise to any customers offended by the in-game terminology used to classify a player's current BMI status, as part of the BMI measurement system integrated into Wii Fit.

Wii Fit is still capable of measuring the BMI for people aged between two and 20 but the resulting figures may not be entirely accurate for younger age groups due to varying levels of development."

@Gozu: Whoops, that's what I get for skimming through it too fast. Still, I find it quite funny and it's got me thinking now as to how all the fatty Americans will react once this game gets around everywhere.

Really? I've seen plenty of kids that I'd love to point out are fat. Granted it sounds like that label wasn't very appropriate in this case, but am I the only one that thinks we're getting a bit overprotective when it comes to stuff like this? Was that child's self-esteem so low that she's this distraught over an inaccurate comment made by a piece of Nintendo software? I hope people are growing up with a thicker skin than that (figuratively).

How come this never came up with earlier software? "Brain Age tells 10-year old that she's an idiot"

Should a 10 year old active kid really be phased by a talking box? No. BMI is really only of help to people over the age of 14, since it's really calibrated for adults, not children.

Indeed... and the game doesn't actually use the word "fat" at all so I've been told, it's the parents and newspaper using the word to emphasise the point...

Still given how the UK is starting to creep up on the US in terms of obesity/overweight levels, I wouldn't be surprised if she actually was overweight. I see so many younger kids like that today it's sad...

I'm huge!
But it gave me a Wii Fit age of 20 when I started it up so I at least have that going for me.
I've gotten a half hour of workout time from it. It's not that bad, pushups kill me, I need to work on those.
ImageGRAAAAAAAAA! 1/2! *dies*
Fat Don is fat...

On the topic of the girl there is a little thing in the manual:
On page 13 they wrote:
For players under 20 years of age:
  • BMI is a measurement typically used to asses fitness in adults, but Wii Fit was created so that players from ages 2-19 can get a BMI measurement as well. However, it is important to understand that there are differences in growth rates, it will affect your BMI, so please keep your User Settings (see page 12) up-to-date and make updates in the Edit Profile section regularly.
  • Users who are active bodybuilders or are very muscular will have a higher BMI because muscle weighs more than fat. This may result in inaccurate measurements.

She was an active girl, under the main age area the game was made for, and obviously didn't read that part of the manual.Image
These parents are blowing a simple thing out of the water! It wasn't even made for her age!
They complain that games make people fat, so Nintendo makes a game to help them become fit.
Then the people complain that the game is calling them fat! Make up your minds people!

I know I'm fat, that's why I got Wii Fit in the first place! I plan on getting fit, and this is my first step.
If you can't handle what the "game" tells you don't play it![/rant]

I like it personally. Heres hoping I can stay on top of this!Image

Then again... women do tend be way too self-conscious. They seem to think they should be as skinny as supermodels. Most of them wouldn't even want to be at all muscular, either.

I LOL'D.

Seriously, though. Games aren't real. They're games for a reason. I don't feel sorry for that girl at all - it's like the same thing as losing. But in this game, you have the opportunity to improve. That's the only difference. She's too stupid to realize that, and so are the parents. They just want the attention. What is with these people??

If you actually get past the "you are a fat tub of lard" part (not actually said in the game, my own view of myself) and take time to enjoy the game it's really quite fun!
I'm unlocking the balance games left and right while trying to keep a nice moderate mixing of exercising routines and I can truly see this paying off in the end.
I can feel the burn and my balance is improving greatly! And I had good balance to begin with! XD

Also, when I go to eat I start thinking about my goal and eat less snack type stuff than I normally would.

I love the running! I'm almost thinking about adding some real running at some point!
I tried to do that once but I couldn't stay with it. Add to that the fact that I was practicing for the mile walk/run for the Presidential Fitness Challenge, and I was trying to make a certain time. Not fun stuff...

Hm... I'm always told I'm underweight. Let's say if this game said I was really fat, would I take it's word over logical people? Hm... I'd definitely not take whatever a video game tells me as truth.

Acording to the game (Had it for a week ^_^) I am borderline overweight. I am under 20, 18 to be exact. I Rarely excersise, apart from infrequent walking, and have found the Wii Fit works quite well for me. ^_^

It won't be for every one, but as a house bound, unhealthy, gamer, it does suit my needs.

Anyone who get's offended by a game, seriously needs to reconsider their mindset. ^_^

Well, being offended by a game is understandable if it criticizes your religion or morals. But it saying you're fat or dumb? The game is too dumb to even tell for sure.

Well, yeah, but in my eyes, a game (or other media) that criticizes, or quetions you Views, should be observed and taken account of.
A game that critisizes the person should be taken very lightly. As long as you like who you are, and Others like who you are (the latter is a bit less important), then be fine with life. ^_^

If I remember correctly though, those WERE third-degree burns, so not completely unfounded.
Sues are often done for a chance of some money, as, especially in the US, a lot of systems like the health care aren't regulated nationally, thus costing more money the better you get it.

The girl shouldn't care, though - the BMI isn't that great for kids.

I'ts more like a joke now, since, as Tinker said the BMI doesn't work so good for people under 20, like me.

Well this is the first I've heard it doesn't work 100% for people age 2-19. Not many people "read" manuals and it might have been better to place the information on the box. (if it is, then ignore this sentence).

Maybe Nintendo should have used the 'overweight' instead of 'fat' but then people would still complain. :chinami:

It doesn't use fat. Overweight is the highest one.
I don't remember the others but I'll let you know what they are when I test today.

And I think it's stupid that people don't read the manual.
And the game itself said that it was designed for people 20 and over when I was setting up my profile!
So there was either a change when they released it over here or those people didn't pay attention. And I think it was probably the latter.

Edit:
I goofed, overweight isn't the top one. It goes like this,

Obese
Overweight
Normal
Underweight

First off, I am fat. I know I am fat. I don't need a game to tell me I am fat. I don't care that I am fat.

That out of the way, I need to submit an idea to Nintendo:

-------------------------
COMMON SENSE DS
Train your... oh wait, you CAN'T fix stupid.

Thanks to Ron White for the quote.
