MadWorld is an ultra-violent, over the top beat-'em-up action game for the Wii.

Basically, it's about an ex-marine named Jack who competes in a crazy game show called Death Watch, where you have to fight and kill ranked opponents in order to move up and continue. The standard enemies are mostly a cakewalk, as they usually stand around doing noting, but the game isn't really about the fighting; it's all about getting the most gruesome, complex kills possible, which isn't too hard as they give you a lot of options to do so. For example, you could stab an enemy in the head with a signpost, stuff a garbage can on his head and then throw him into a spiked wall to finish him off. Or, you could simply beat the crap about of him and then use your wrist-mounted chainsaw to chop him to bits. There are also insane minigames, like Man Darts - a game where you have to use a spiked baseball bat to launch enemies into a giant dart board.

Just from seeing the presentation, the game looks amazing; it's in black and white, with the only color being the yellow life bar and the waves of blood that spill out from the enemies. While that sounds like it would be hard to see, it's actually pretty easy on the eyes, and gives the game a unique look that really stands out, even compared to the more high-end consoles. The soundtrack is mostly from unknown hip-hop artists, and while hip-hop isn't usually my thing, it actually sounds pretty good. Oh, and the crazy, raunchy announcers are great to listen to, made better by the fact that they're voiced by two awesome people - Greg Proops (Whose Line is it Anyway?) and John DiMaggio (Bender from Futurama). Their commentary alone is reason enough to play the game.

Having played the game for a few hours, I can certainly recommend it to anyone with a Wii (and old enough to play it, of course). It's an amazing ride, even if it isn't all that long, and definately worth a couple of playthroughs, since you unlock the hard difficulty after playing through it once. Actually, the hard mode really does live up to its name - not only do you only get one life, but the enemies get much smarter and actually dodge and counter your attacks. And besides, how can you go wrong with a german boss named Herr Fredrick von Twirlenkiller? :karma:

Yup. It was released in the U.S. on March 10th. It comes out in Europe on March 20th, and elsewhere on the 26th. Oddly enough, it looks like Japan won't be getting it at all.

More like predictably enough, due to their aversion German-like aversion to violent games.

I tried to pick up a copy but sadly the 4 they had were for pre orders... Which I neglected to get. So I have to wait to get my copy.

It reminds me a bit of No more Heroes...

As I posted (and got likely smacked in the face for it) on the PlatinumGames blog...

"I. Just. Came. Although prematurely because it's way too short."

They've packed a Hideo Kojima amount of bullshit in there and yet it fits. You're not meant to know anything, and Jack doesn't care about knowing anything either. There's some problems (like how on Normal the game feels too easy, the motorcycle levels are... meh to be fair, etc.) but it's still a great game.

However, the last boss is a complete pussy. Compared to Martin, who can kill Jack if he so much as corners you, if you die on the last boss, you simply fail at MadWorld.

I liked the return of the backflip to dodge mechanic lifted straight out of GodHand. It's by the same guys, or at least by the same vision and it shows. It's really more of a side-grade to GodHand (trading difficulty for even more style), but honestly both are fucking awesome, and MadWorld, likely due to the visual style, the incessant gay jokes from the announcers and the ultra-violence, got 2 points more from most publications than GodHand.

EDIT: If someone could find me a torrent of the soundtrack (or a place where I could procure it legally, because they way they're distributing it in North America is complete fucking bullshit), I'd be grateful.

While I haven't played the game, Madworld looks and sounds amazing. Admittingly, I'm a little intimidated all of the gore. But this game is just too good to pass up.

Honestly, don't be. The "gore" is just a whole mess of blood. No hanging guts, no realistic depictions other than a whole mess of blood. It's far more stylized than most would be led to believe.
