I want your opinion, what would YOU say is the Greatest RPG (or RPGs) you have ever played and why?

Me?

Breath of Fire III - Arguably the best in the series, I loved the gameplay, the beautiful locales (for what the PS1 could handle), some pretty fun combat, the soundtrack was OK, but the highlight was the story progression, I loved it! It was perfect, so intuitive, kind of silly at some points but it also had some pretty comedic writing.

Dark Cloud 2 - Much better than it's predecessor, it has beautiful cel-shaded graphics, the Georama gameplay was cool, and all the sidequests were fun too, I got like 70 hrs of gameplay out of this game.

I also have to say that Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door is also pretty fun, though not the best, along with a couple Final Fantasies.

I like both JRPGs and WRPGS. I'm not too fond of MMOs though.

Morrowind is awesome, some other of my favourites are TWEWY and the Soul Blazer trilogy.

I don't play too many RPGs, but I loved Golden Sun and the first two Paper Marios.

Shadow Hearts Covenant: It hits most the bases (no RPG ever hits them all) in terms of an enjoyable RPG. Above average story, good characters that make you care about them, one of the best if not *the* best main character, good graphics, lots of sidequests, fun gameplay, top notch musics/voices, and its one of the few RPGs to really get me emotionally involed and even cry (FF X's ending? No. The Miracle event? Hells yes).

I too LOVE the Mother/Earthbound series, but I think that Chrono Trigger takes the cake.

I'd say Chrono Trigger, it's rare you can complete a game without the main character.

But I'd also put in a vote for FFX

Mother 3 is awesome, I found the other two games to be a bit slow, though. Except for the music, which was awesome.

I tend to like all RPGs I beat, but these have to stand out among everything I've beaten thus far. The reason why I like them can pretty much be summed up in one word: epic.

Thousand Arms
Final Fantasy IX
Legend of Mana
Valkyrie Profile
Suikoden I, II
Kingdom Hearts 1, 2
Tales of the Abyss
Persona 3, 4

Final Fantasy VI is tops. Then there's the obvious ones like Chrono Trigger, Lunar: SSSC, Persona 3 and 4, EarthBound, Secret of Mana, etc.

...Thousand Arms? Not that I hated it or anything, but best?

Paper Mario, TWEWY, Skies of Arcadia and TOS all get honourable mentions as well.

Final Fantasy Tactics. Favorite game ever, favorite game character ever. The only way they could have made it better was if they fixed the translation (and I don't mean the remake, that translation also sucked).

I'm also a fan of Chrono Trigger, FFs VI, VII, IX, and XII, and Odin Sphere (if it counts?)

Well my favorite game is Final Fantasy X. ^_^

Other favorites include Persona 3: FES, Chrono Trigger, the first two Paper Marios, TWEWY, and the first Kingdom Hearts.

But I wonder... I also like games like Pokemon, Fire Emblem, and Harvest Moon, but sometimes I wonder if they can truly be called RPGs. What really constitutes an RPG, anyway? What video games are not RPGs?

this is what wikipedia said:
A role-playing video game (RPG) is a computer or video game where the player controls one or several characters, and achieves victory by completing a series of quests. A key feature of the genre is that characters grow in power and abilities, and characters are typically designed by the player. Players explore a game world, while solving puzzles and engaging in tactical combat.
Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy IV. Yes, as much as I love Golden Sun, it is not the greatest that I've played.

You just gotta leave em beside each other a fair while but it was awesome it can change the endings you get in the summary of the characters at the end.

Nobody mentioned two of Sega's sucessful ones, Skies of Arcadia: Legends and Shenmue II. Both deserve a sequel, but noooo, Sega thinks they can make more money by making another Sonic game nobody is going to play. Except the one Bioware made; Bioware NEVER makes a bad game.
