Seeing as there hasn't been a true thread of this yet, you can check out a bunch of videos of the game (including the games "title defense mode", where you are pitted against fighters who have COVERED UP THEIR WEAKNESSES, i.e. Glass Joe wearing a helmet, King Hippo having a manhole glued on his belly) here.

Also just watch this, you won't regret it.

The game looks to be awesome. It retains the old-school Punch-Out!! gameplay, brings back many classic characters and updates the visuals, all of which together is just great. Aside from Title Defense Mode, there's also Challenge Mode, where you have to complete fights under specific conditions, like knocking Glass Joe down three times but still letting him win the fight, or knocking him out in a single hit.

As long as it doesn't suck as much as Super Punch Out!! (it was just nothing like the old game ...), I'm fine with it. From what I can gather it seems to be pretty amazing.

Wow. I never played neither Punch-Out!! nor Super Punch-Out!!, but this game looks neat. I'll probably get it for my li'l brother's birthday.
Also, this may lead me to trying Punch-Out!! in a NES emulator. Is it worth it?

Of course it is. It's simple to learn and a whole lot of fun, and the characters are creative.

True. But if you think about it, Mike Tyson's Punch Out was quite different from its arcade counterpart. Super Punch Out plays more like the arcade games & I like it personally. Because I'm use to it, I'll probably get used to the PO Wii controls quickly. My point is, if you like Punch Out for the Wii, then you might actually get to like Super Punch Out.

If by creative, you mean subtly-racist stereotypes. Awesome still, though. :hobohodo:

Due mostly to the silluette of a big character that's been up on the Punch-Out!! Wii website since the beginning, most believe that the final boss is going to be Mr. Dream. It's definately not Mike Tyson, at least, as not only wouldn't it make sense at this point, but during a recent interview he claims that he hasn't even heard anything about a new Punch-Out!! game.

Well, Punch-Out Wii appears to use the best aspects of the previous games put together. The health/heart meter systems from the NES version, most of the good boxers from the earlier games, and the finer control points of the SNES and arcade versions. In any case, I'm just glad to have a new Punch-Out game after all these years.

EDIT: In case anyone's wondering, the characters confirmed so far, spoiler tagged just in case:

Spoiler:
Glass Joe
Von Kaiser
Disco Kid (the only new character)
King Hippo
Piston Hondo (Name was changed by Nintendo, formerly Piston Honda)
Great Tiger
Bear Hugger
Bald Bull
Don Flamenco
Super Macho Man
Giga Mac (a multiplayer-exclusive transformation of Little Mac)

There's supposed to be a total of about 13 boxers. Considering the Title Defense mode gives all the available boxers new moves and covers up their weaknesses, there's essentially 26 different boxers to fight.

Seriously I'd love if it was 16 - With 16 you get 4 circuits with 4 boxers.

I remember reading in an interview that there are less boxers than Super Punch-Out!!, which is 16 IIRC. I'm fairly sure the total for this game was 13 - three circuits with four unique boxers each, and an extra round for the final fight. I could be wrong, though, it's been awhile since I've read up on it.

On a seperate note, I heard that in his introduction to the ring, Von Kaiser apparently says "I am the German Steel Machine! My name is Von Kaiser!" in German. So either Next Level Games watched a certain fake movie trailer, or this is some sort of coincidence. :godot:

I wasn't sure it was worded quite like that, though. Damn it, now I'm going to have to play the NES version again when I have some time. Would probably give me some good practice for the Wii version too if the Virtual Console releases didn't have an extra bit of lag to them at times.

This link currently has two videos: a commercial of Little Mac making his 15-year comeback after losing the WVBA title to King Hippo, and a training/tutorial video by Doc Louis.

The commercial states that there will only be 12 CLASSIC fighters returning, along with an unspecified number of newcomers.
If Mac is separate from this count, that brings the classic roster up to 13; in this case, there's only three slots left!
With most of the original boxers returning and Bear Hugger being the only SNES character on the Wii, I thought it would be cool to have Piston Hurricane (he just looks like someone that can fit in with the Wii roster) and Nick Bruiser (SPO's final boss; not quite "Tyson-tough", but he is the closest boxer to it and he can "break" your arms!) return.
And what kind of Punchout game would it be without Mr. Sandman?! Along with Super Macho Man and Bald Bull, they're the only three characters to have appeared in BOTH console releases!

As for the mystery man on the official website, there's 3 possible answers:
a.) It's a new character. 'Nuff said.
b.) It's Mr. Dream. He would fit the bill, but if you've seen his original look in the NES Punchout, they've must've done a complete overhaul on his character, especially with a pose like THAT.
c.) It's....MIKE TYSON! I don't care how unlikely this may be, my money's on this one! Just LOOK at him!(? XD) The build, his structure, the hair (uh...yeah)...it has to be--!

BTW, does anyone else think Disco Kid resembles Dwayne Johnson?

Nintendo really knows how to make great advertisements; First the interactive/destructable Wario Land: Shake It! page and now this great piece of fanservice.

Well, when they say "classic roster", it's usually assumed that Little Mac isn't included, as you never fight against him. Also, Bear Hugger isn't the only Super Punch-Out!! boxer included in the game, as Aran Ryan has been confirmed (2:01). Bald Bull was confirmed as well. I don't think Piston Hurricane would fit well into the roster, as we already have his predecessor, Piston Hondo, and it was stated in an interview that neither of the Bruiser Brothers are in the game.

The full roster was revealed by reviewers with early copies of the game, and now the official site confirms it, minus the dream fight, which according to said reviewers is Mr. Sandman. There's also supposedly an additional surprise at the end of the Title Defense mode, though no one appears to have beaten it yet.

The game's been getting some good reviews. Nintendo Power gave it an 8.5, 1UP gave it an A+, IGN gave it an 8.8. Biggest complaint accross the board has been the balance board controls, which most agree just isn't fast enough to keep up with the speed of the characters. Some have found the versus mode to be unnecessary, others supplimentry to the single player. IGN's biggest complaint was the lack of online, but they complain about a lack of online in everything.

EDIT: In the Nintendo world store in NYC tomarrow, they're giving out Little Mac's pink sweatshirt to anyone who participates in a tournament, while the winners recieve a boxing glove autographed by him:

So everyone from the original game except Tyson/Mr. Dream made it in. I'm a little suprised about Mr. Sandman being the 'final boss', but it's all good.

The only question I have is...Aran Ryan? Bear Hugger was a great one to carry over from Super Punch-Out!!, but out of all the other boxers they could have used: Dragon Chan, Masked Muscle, Heike Kagero, Hoy Quarlow...why pick one of the most forgettable guys in the game? :yuusaku:

Since they couldn't use Tyson, but still wanted to recreate that classic Punch-Out!! experience, I think it's pretty obvious why they moved Mr. Sandman into the champion's slot. That, and title changes happen all the time in real boxing, so it's probably not impossible in the WVBA, as well. :hobohodo:

They seemed to pick the boxers that use mostly "legal" boxing moves, which I think fits the game better than some of the more extreme boxers from SPO - Dragon Chan and Hoy Quarlow, in particular, just don't work when put alongside the final cast of the game.

Kicking and spitting and fucking WEAPONS

I'm glad they took them out. It was stupid.

It's a shame, because Super Punch-Out!! was a superior title in the gameplay department. But man, the more I see of Wii Punch-Out!! the more incredible it looks.

Correction: One of the fighters in the Last Stand mode has been revealed, though he does seem to be the last opponent unlocked in the game as far as anyone knows. I'd hardly call him the final boss, all things considered.

According to GameFAQs, Last Stand mode is what you unlock after beating Title Defense mode. It pits you against three apparently random fighters in a row. You're given a very high heart meter that never recovers, so dodgeing is more vital than usual, and of course you have to win the match under those hard conditions.

I've pretty much been playing the game almost nonstop since I picked it up around noon today. I must say, it is definately a blast to play and a highly recommended title, especially for any old-school Punch-Out!! fans.

All the boxers are great. Most of them are hard without being cheap, which means that if you get hurt that it's mostly your fault, and the improvements to their designs and profiles are top notch. Aran Ryan in particular is a notable example, as they turned him from a run-of-the-mill irish boxer with standard moves into a borderline psychopath with ADHD.

Great Tiger is fairly easy to figure out once you realize that you only need to dodge in the same direction Great Tiger's attack comes from. Not to mention that the light on his turban is a dead giveaway to what he's going to do next.
