What are your thoughts on this game so far? Are you excited at the prospect of a sharper focus on story and character (with voice acting!), or do you think it's a continuation down the path of ruin for the series? What do you think of the 2D/3D dynamic? Most importantly, what do you think of Samus's suit returning to its bright yellow color scheme?
We don't know many concrete details about the game at the moment, but thankfully that should change in a matter of hours when we'll get some hands-on impressions!
Until then, let's get this train rolling!

Yeah, she's definitely been "touching" some enemies without taking damage from them. More like giving them the beatdown!
Wonder how that'll work in-game...?
EDIT: Apparently, the Nunchuck will not be used in first-person view, so the whole game's Wiimote-only. Interesting!

Oh, and it should be noted that the game bears a strong resemblance to the prototype footage of Metroid Prime that was shown at E3 2000. Not sure if it had any influence on the current game, but it's a possibility.

I have to agree, Metroid Prime showed how it's done. You don't need blatant cut-scenes and dialogue to tell a good story. I honestly didn't think I'd be so bothered by Prime 3's more cinematic bent (i.e. much more spoken dialogue), but I was. I missed the total silence (total, that is, save for the ambient music, sound effects, and sparse exclamations from Samus herself). I'm still willing to give Metroid: Other M a chance, though. It certainly interests me more than Mario Galaxy 2...

I don't think so. Apparently it's just a perspective change for scanning, locking on, and firing missiles. It should be noted that you can't move while in first-person, but it's still not on rails, per se. Check it out.

As you can switch perspectives at any time, that is certainly not the case. Rather, Samus simply can't move during the first-person view, so changing perspectives constantly is important for boss fights and/or puzzles.

Most interesting...I'm rather glad to see it's not going to take place after Fusion. I feel that Fusion...It needs a game or too before they go off of that. Get some more Story Telling under that Power suit. I hope that the one after Fusion in the time line has one heck of story.

That does sound potentially interesting, however, if they were to do something like that, the gameplay would probably have to stray far from the Metroid norm. No time to really explore a planet and fight space bosses when you're on the run from the man.

The fan reception on Fusion was fairly underwhelming anyway so I honestly don't think they're going to be going back to that anytime soon.
This era of old school appreciation (Mega Man 9 and 10, Sonic 4) we're going through right now is A-OK by me. Modern technology coupled with old school values is as good as it gets for me.

I think they could send her on some other mission (I have no idea what!) as a kind of "Just do this and we'll forget about the whole thing" kind of deal. "An offer she can't refuse," if you will. After all, the alternative would probably be getting tried for crimes against the government!
On the other hand, the last thing we need is yet another example of the "corrupt government" trope. Fusion was the first (and only) title in the series I can think of wherein the Federation was depicted in a negative manner. Then again, it's chronologically the most recent, so that may just be the state of things now.

I just wish Nintendo would go all the way with this treatment for Mario. New Super Mario Bros. Wii probably counts as this for most people, but quite frankly, I WANT MY PIXEL ART!!!
Most importantly, the entire game should be at least as hard as the "special levels" in Super Mario World!
(Music of a more low-tech variety would be welcome too.)

Anyways, sadly I do not have a Wii, so I can't play this game. I honestly like Metroid because the characters are actually 3-dimensional, as opposed to the really, really flat characters that comprise all of Nintendo's other games.
I have played the previous two Metroid Primes, Metroid Fusion, and Metroid Prime 3 on a friend's Wii, but without one myself, this presents a problem.
Also, I liked Fusion. It wasn't terrible and it had Samus talk (albeit inner monologue...mostly).

That's why Zero Mission and Super Metroid are my two favorites. There's a general path but there's a lot of goofing off and different paths and sequence breaking you can do. Fusion, not so much.

Mario, Link, all the Pokemon characters. Do they even have a personality at all? Nope, because they don't talk. And if they do, you can't understand them.
Many even lack backstories (Mario is a glaring one) to explain anything. Nintendo's games are basically "Here's the setting, go off and have fun. We won't try to explain the plot to you, or any characters, you're just playing the games for fun".
It works, but you can only play Mario games so many times before it just becomes a simple going through the motions thing because they never change in plot (and several times, not in gameplay).
Zelda games actually have that problem too. The plot, while the fine details do change, you can pretty much tell what's going to happen next after several games because the motions don't change at all.
Metroid was different. The characters had backstories, the games had a nice plot to them (even if it wasn't noticeably there), there were motivations beyond "save the princess" type motivations, and it changed every time. While some power-ups remain constants like missiles and Morph Balls, the plot is rarely the same thing twice. That's why I like Metroid games so much. There's a good plot to it and the games aren't just remakes of each other.

And I think, after Fusion, it's not so much Samus would be on the run, as she'd just distance herself from the Federation. Plus she's a bounty hunter. So maybe, we'll get a bounty hunting mission next in the timeline, which would also allow for traditional Metroid formula, and room for new enemies to spice things up. And technically, Samus is now part Metroid, so the title's still relevant.

That is because the original Metroid is a terrible game. For it's time it was great and revolutionary, but it has not aged well at ALL. Everywhere looks the same and there's these huge corridors with like, nothing in them. There's no reason to ever play it for anything beyond nostalgia's sake now that Zero Mission exists.
Now if only they'd give that treatment to Metroid 2: Return of Samus. Such potential wasted by the very limited Gameboy.

Some might be disturbed at the total lack of gameplay, but it's not like they haven't shown us any up till now. Besides, the big deal for this game is the new emphasis on story, or at least that's how this trailer makes it look like they're approaching it. What do you think?

You clearly haven't played the first Metroid game when you yourself were a kid. I don't know why but I find it very annoying when people compare Metroid and Zero Mission. Yes I know Zero Mission has better graphics and controls but It's just too easy. the exploration is the origin of Metroid when in Zero Mission you have Chozos giving you hints and a map system. Without the "Hint-Chozos" I'd like it much better.
DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE GAME BOY. Besides, Doctor64 from yoyogames.com is already making a very promising remake of Metroid 2.

Actually, I have. Like I said, it was cool and fun then, but it hasn't aged well. I like the exploration aspect (hence why I didn't like Fusion as much.) However, you can't imply that the hint Chozo statues hold your hand like Adam did. The statues were basically there for "Hey you should probably go get the Power Grip next but go where ever you want." There's endless sequence breaking and exploration possibilities without feeling like there are any useless areas like Metroid has.
A lot of the NES classics are bad games. Pioneering games, important games, nostalgic games. But bad. The original Metroid is among these.
I love exploration as much as the next guy, but no map is just annoying. Hence why every game since Super Metroid has used them. Are you telling me you felt the exploration in Super Metroid wasn't good because it had a map?
Edit: Can't say I like the way Samus is looking to be so far in the trailers.

I found Super Metroid taxing enough with a map, don't even mention the idea of there not being one!
I have to agree with Mayhem, I tried the original Metroid and I just couldn't get into it. Super Metroid was a different story altogether (although my favorite Metroid ever is still the original Prime).

It's funny that people are moaning about the supposed "plot from out of nowhere" when actually Metroid has had a very strong plot ever since the original game - it just did what all games did back then and put it in the manual for anyone who cared to read it. The difference this time around is that it's not being brushed to the side or merely alluded to as it was in the Prime Trilogy - this time it's going to take center stage alongside the alien-annihilation.
Apparently people were equally sceptical of Metroid Prime before it was released - and look how that ended up. All things considered I'm going to give this the benefit of the doubt, and besides, I like strong plots in my games anyway, so for me more good plotlines is a very good thing indeed.
