I didn't see a topic for this, so I decided to make a topic to discuss it.

So, today at GDC Sony fully revealed their motion controller to the press, the PlayStation Move:
Image
As you can see, the controller comes with a built-in strap and its own wireless nunchuck-esque knockoff, which is called the PlayStation Move Subcontroller. The light on the PSMove controller changes color to distinguish itself from the background, making it easy for the PlayStation Eye (one of which is necessary to use the controller) to track. You can read more about the specifics of how the controller works here.

It will come in three bundles: The controller by itself, the controller and the Playstation Eye, and the controller in the box with the PS3 console. It's set to be released in Fall 2010.

Also, several games were announced for use with the controller, including Sports Champion - the PSMove version of Wii Sports; and Motion Fighters, a first-person fighting game of sorts, among others.

So, any opinions on Sony's PSMove? Thoughts on the possibilities, or hopes for the future? Criticism is always welcome, too.

And in case anyone wants a comparison:

It wouldn't be the first time Sony stole something from Nintendo.

Inb4 the same Sony fanboys that criticized the Wii's motion controls flock to this.

Now they just need to start charging for the internet or swap the d-pad and left stick around and we'll have a proper WiiStation360.

Something like that. The PSEye uses it to track the controller's location and depth to and from the screen, and it changes color depending on the background so the camera doesn't lose track of it. I'm somewhat skeptical of it, though - I'd imagine the "orb" to be very distracting when playing in the dark.

Blatant Wiimote aping. The biggest difference is that it allows the controller to interact three dimensionally whereas the Wiimote only has a two dimensional interface. I have to admit that it does allow for a greater amount of interactivity which is a huge motivating factor to play video games, so this has lots of good potential.

Poor Sony. It's kinda hard to be unique with this sort of thing, isn't it? The wand-nunchuck combo just feels the most natural now, and there aren't any other designs that really work.

Now, Natal on the other hand...we shouldn't raise our expectations too high there. I mean, it just looks like the Playstation Eye, probably operates the same too...so I'm not getting my hopes up.

Oh boy... I was right for once. When Nintendo made the Motion controllers I knew eventually the other 2 would join up at some point. So Sony made a creepily similar Motion Controller while Microsoft is making Natal...Which is basically like you on a Green Screen.

And Just wait until the next big change. No, It wont be Natal as much as Microsoft wants it to be. And It better not be 3-d for god's sake. It will probably be some sort of virtual Reality thing. And then all the systems will use it. Then it will be full connectivity to you. And then after that is used, They'll just make video games Live! And then all the aliens and monster will rule the world.

God I hope me and my friends last joke prediction will be false.

Because they haven't copyrighted a bulb, black design and the wireless communication between the wand and nunchuck?

But I guess they have copyrighted a motion-sensing tv-remote-like wireless controller which has an analog stick-including counter-part. Who knows :keiko:

Sony's entire life in the video game industry has consisted of stealing things from Nintendo. Even the PlayStation itself was stolen from Nintendo. People say that Nintendo was late into the 3-D gaming industry, but that's only because Sony outright just STOLE their console. And now, this. They might as well have just reconfigured a Wii Remote to work with a PlayStation and then written "Playstation" over "Wii" with a sharpie.
Say, that reminds me of a puzzle! Have you ever heard this one, Luke?

Oh? That's fanboyism. It was actually a partnership that was cancelled, by Nintendo, it wasn't a stolen idea (Why isn't it stolen? Because Sony had almost completely developed the console themselves, and that would pretty much have full rights to the console and any games sold on it. Sony only created the console BECAUSE of Nintendo due to a partnership set up in 1988). Besides, Nintendo then went to partner with Philips, the creators of the CD-I.

We all know how that went.

Alright, alright, Sony didn't steal the Playstation, I'll give you that much. However, the reason that Nintendo called off the partnership was because Sony tried to get Nintendo to sign a contract that would give Sony the rights to some of Nintendo's characters, or so I've heard. Although, I'm not quite sure about that...
It annoys me when PlayStation fanboys say "OMG DOOD NITNENDO SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!111" because Nintendo was at least partly involved in the creation of the PlayStation.

As for the CD-I, that was just stupidity and laziness on Nintendo's part. (In fact, I'd say that partnering with Sony was pretty stupid too...) Although, you have to admit, those CD-I games are so badly made that they're actually pretty funny.

That's just silly. It's pretty easy to see you have no idea what you're talking about. Sony made some sort of CD add on for the SNES, Nintendo asked them to do this, but when Sony finished it Nintendo didn't want it anymore. Sony were pissed and created the Playstation. There's more to it than that but that is basically what happened. It was Phillips that made the CD-I games.

The shiny new Sony stick looks nice, but I doubt it'll make much of a dent in Nintendo's motion thingy market

The contract already signed in 1988 stated that Sony had the rights to anything sold on their console/add-on. So, say Mario CD was launched on the SNES-CD (PSOne), Sony would have the rights to it. Nintendo didn't want that.

Nintendo was the driving force, but they obviously weren't the ones who designed it (See: N64).

And, yes, I'm with Steiner. That's the story in a nutshell.

Ohh, I didn't notice that glowing ball was actually a part of the controller, I thought it was just a light. Well from that it's worse than what I already thought of it, if it wasn't bad enough.

Gah, what a "coincidence" these new controllers look almost identical to the Wiimote? Seriously Sony, get your own ideas.

Sony's new motion controller is more precise than Nintendo's motion controller, it's the bulb that allows for this.

Oh? You can't buy them here.

They need to stop the motion control garbage. Wii games suck for a reason. This can work well for adventure games (and maybe something like Heavy Rain or a Bioware thing...) but not the majority of games. Your GTAs, your MGSs and your Uncharteds or whatever.

The only announced title that anyone cares about is SOCOM. Which out of the line up is the only 'proper' gamer's gamey game game for gamers that game.
But who played the SOCOM series?
...Anyone?
Exactly. And if you were given the choice, you'd want to use a controller anyway.

Correction: bad Wii games suck for a reason. Good Wii games, and there are plenty of them, can pull off motion controls well.

And can you really not see any way a game like Uncharted can be enhanced with such controls, or shooting games like MGS or even GTA? It's not a stretch to imagine point at the screen to shoot, or using the Move controllers to climb a building or something.

I don't think we can say for sure if the PSMove is more percise than the Wii remote or not until it's released. If anything, it just seems to be the same problem the Motion Plus has with callibration, considering they they had to recalibrate the controller between every game during the live demo.

Aren't the only good Wii games just Nintendo repeating Nintendo though? (Metroid Prime, Super Mario, Twilight Princesss)
To explain a little better - my problem is that even the good ones, with good controls (or good ideas in the case of that Silent Hill game) are still nowhere near comparable in quality to something like Grand Theft Auto IV - and I don't mean graphically.

People have evolved to being able to aim with analogue sticks quite well. I don't think the vague screen pointing to target is going to improve the shooting, nor do I think motion controls could make building climbing any better than just using a pad.

I feel the same way about Natal.

Yes, I agree on this one. One I can name off the bat is the Trauma Center Series, they make great use of the motion, and do well on it as well.

Far from it. There are several good, non-Nintendo-developed Wii games. Simply glancing over the average review scores on Metacritic is proof enough of that.

Sounds like your view of Wii games is skewed because you're comparing them to an entirely different experience instead of looking at them as is.

I never said anything about improving or replacing existing controls entirely. I simply meant that having another control option for the developers to work with can be optimal in engaging the player in the experience. I don't believe traditional control methods are going anywhere, but if motion controls can bring something new to an otherwise stale environment, I don't see the harm in having both options.

As for Natal... well, I don't really care for it one way or another. It's interesting in theory, but without the physical feedback of something in your hand to work with, the demos shown off for it so far don't look very fun to me.

Apparently the PSMove has a better "range" or something. It's got more of a 3D environment than the Wii, which is just up, down, left, right, forward, back. However, I obviously haven't used it, so I can't say for sure.

And of course, that was a demo. I doubt they'd release it like that, it'd be a great way to kill the entire idea.

Bah, go back and play on your atari [/sarcasm]

Aiming with analogue sticks is something that you have to learn though, especially with precision. If the sensor is set up right, pointing at something is quite easy and relatively accurate, as you've probably been pointing at things since you were a baby. The point is that someone who isn't used to conventional controllers will find it much easier to point at something and press 'B' or 'X', and that's probably the market Sony's aiming at (because Nintendo going into that market worked really well).
Climbing a building however, probably won't work as well. But I guess they're not adding anything new to gameplay, just experimenting with 'more realistic' controls.

The light-bulb looks stupid either way, but would probably fun to mess around with in the dark with the TV off. I'd probably get one or two just to mess around with, screw the console (although the bulb probably won't turn on without one...).

Yes, stolen, etc. Sure it's kind of silly, but motion control is part of the gaming genre now; it would be even more silly for Sony to ignore it on principle. I don't really see it as stealing any more than the fact that most computers use a mouse is stealing, or all cell phones now having cameras and internet and Twitter is stealing.

Plus it might mean getting those few good Wii-games-dependent-on-motion-controls ported over, like the Resident Evil shooter games (shut up I don't care if they fit most people's definition of "good"!) or Madworld or something. I don't want to see a ton of games go to motion, because I find it exhausting, but think of something like Heavy Rain done with a remote: tons of extra possibilities for QTEs, with the same graphics capability of the PS3. Cheap rip off or not, good things will come out of it.

And bad things, of course...

I just want to get my hands on it to see if it's a more comfortable grip than the Wii mote. Maybe I just hold it wrong, but when using the trigger I always feel like it's gonna slide out the back of my hand. And the fact that the "nun-chuck" is wireless? Thank you!

Should be an interesting E3 this year.

Far from it. There are several good, non-Nintendo-developed Wii games. Simply glancing over the average review scores on Metacritic is proof enough of that.
Twilight Princess and Smash Brothers Brawl are often played without motion control anyway.
World of Goo is a downloadable that is also critically acclaimed on the PC. (in fairness, it's not a genre I'm into and I don't get downloadable games at all)
Rock Band 2 is on other consoles.
Okami, RE4 and the two thirds of the Metroid trilogy were as acclaimed on other consoles. Motion control didn't define them or massively improve them or anything.

Doesn't that just leave us with Super Mario Galaxy?

Sounds like your view of Wii games is skewed because you're comparing them to an entirely different experience instead of looking at them as is.
But Wii games are either quirky mini game collections, one idea spread thinly into a game, or repackaged games from other consoles that arguably haven't been improved.

I feel the same way about Natal.

Outside of the bit of fun you have your first time with Wii Sports, what has it brought that is new? :\

How do you measure "Quality" between two totally different, to totally different audiences made games?

-SS
By whether or not I like them. ;D

In more seriousness, I don't see why they have different audiences. Take God of War and Mad World. God Of War is just objectively better. You give a gamer (the 'audience' for both games) the choice - they're going to want God of War.

A joystick? Don't be ridiculous! The Sega Mega Drive is were it is at, sir!

That's a fair point, but we've had light guns that do that since the nighties.

And the market that Nintendo has a grip on is more the Wii Sports, Wii Fit people than the shooter fans. I think this is a poor attempt at capturing that market as Sony is bringing nothing new to the table except HD.
Why would the people want to buy a Playstation 3 AND the Move hardware when they could just stick with their Wii?

But the Wiimote works. (From what I've heard, the light guns mostly didn't. I wasn't around for most of the nineties so I wouldn't know first-hand, and if I was, I wouldn't have had an NES/SNES or Mega Drive anyway. The PC was enough, I was always told.)

That market is pretty huge apparently. Console failure isn't likely the reason the Wii sells so well (opposed to Xbox360, apparently).
For people who don't have a Wii yet, it's pretty much an all-in-one entertainment package now. Blu-ray, DVD playback, music playback, PS3 games for the older kids in the family, and now Wii ripoffs for everyone else (I don't know if there's anything that should/shouldn't be here as I don't own one). What more could they want? They'd buy this for sure now! All they're missing is a place to plug an iPod in and then its definitely got everything.

You clearly haven't played those games yourself. Or if you have I can't understand where have you gotten that attitude.

I'm pretty sure light guns worked from at least the PS1 era onwards. (I only have first hand experience with arcade ones - specifically Time Crisis 2, to be honest)
Hell, the Dreamcast lightgun had a d-pad and buttons. All it's missing is waggle.

Good point. But don't you wonder who could afford a PS3 and doesn't already own a Wii?
(I think the bundled Wii Sports is highest selling game of all time. We're talking like 60 million units here)

What was the problem?

Aren't Zak and Wiki and the Trauma Center games basically mini-game collections?
And No More Heroes is a pretty average brawler style game. Repetitive combat and badly designed side missions. (the chores to earn money in the first game, specifically)

Surely you'd rather go with a GTAIV, an Uncharted 2, Heavy Rain, Mass Effect 2 or any epic RPG?
I think if you ask most gamers, they'd rather play Chrono Trigger than any of the games you named.

Steel Samurai wrote:

No, I'm saying they should. ;D

But seriously, there's such a thing as objectivity and a general consensus on quality. I mean Metacritic has a margin of error and personal opinion can factor in...But you can't, for example, say that Gears of War is an unpolished game. Even if you, like me, hate the aesthetic, have a lot of problems with the whole concept and gameplay and generally think of the game as a waste.

I would also add that all the great steps forward in games this generation have been on the other consoles.
The level of control, the details and the warzones of Metal Gear Solid 4. The steps forward in interactive story telling in Heavy Rain and Mass Effect 2. The dynamic set pieces, zero loading times, cinematic quality and blending of Uncharted 2. Detailed online multiplayer sandboxes in GTAIV and Crackdown. The destructible environments of Red Faction Guerilla.
Etcetera, etcetera.

And the Wii has given us...Waggle.
A gimmick that was lost on me because I'd used the Eyetoy before.

Wii itself is a great step forward. Not in this generation only but in gaming history.

But back to the topic :keiko:

Oh, okay. This is the first generation I've been allowed to have a console. Now I have 4 (Wii, 360, PS2 & N64), so I wouldn't have been paying attention anyway.

That's something Sony will have to figure out later. (Besides, can you even get new Wiis without Wii Sports?)

I'd say they'd like to play Chrono Trigger mainly for the memories/nostalgia. But it is an excellent game.

More detail can be attributed to better hardware. Interactive story telling is something that I don't think had to wait this long. It probably could have been done a fair while ago, had they had the space and effort. Dynamic set pieces, sure, cinematic quality, okay. Blending I think was one of the reasons some people loved FFVII, and zero loading times is something that isn't really new. I'm sure quite a few CD based games were load-free before this generation (apart from loading data off a memory card).
The Wii has given us more than waggle, it gave us FREEDOM
The waggle is slightly different than the Eyetoy, as you are holding a physical item to waggle, but the gimmick is mostly that. A gimmick
Microsoft's project NATAL however... It offers us what? 2 Eyetoys stitched together and some more advanced technology? This is revolutionary stuff I tell you.
