Is this meant to be any good? I don't think it's been released yet. Is there any investigating like in PW? I doubt its exactly like PW (it sounds more comedic from what I read in the IGN article).
The screens look impressive for a DS game though.

So what Jack Hunter is this one? A Europe release of the half ass one the US got? If so I hope they actually have the full game and I might import it.

According to what I heard, the actual series is pretty decent. But supposedly the English localization removed some things and changed script?

Only that Tantei Jinguuji Saburou is way older than Gyakuten Saiban. And they don't even try to do the same within the medium.

This seems to be a localization of Kienai Kokoro, the second in the DS iterations of Tantei Jinguuji Saburou and a vast improvement upon the first one. The first 5 stories are once again ports of the mobile phone stories of Jinguuji (the first two are pretty good as is the fourth) and the extra DS story (Kienai Kokoro) is really good, a long and tragic story that couldn't possibly appear in Phoenix Wright.

Luckily, it seems Aksys has learned from its mistakes and this time isn't going throw out more than half of the game away in the process of localization (yes, the previous Jake Hunter game was less than half of the original Japanese Tantei Jinguuji Saburou: Inishie no Kioku).

I hope people will give this one (with seemingly improving localization effort) an extra chance, because I actually really enjoy the DS Jinguuji games and was kinda disappointed to see many people writing it off as an subpar series because of a very lacking English localization.

Just to make sure I understand: The first DS Jake Hunter game was horribly localized, but this one seems like it'll be localized fine so it should be a really good game?

Also, what's the gameplay like?

Hmm, I just read the IGN article once again and I guess it was wishful thinking on my part, I missed the "Jake Hunter Detective Story: Memories of the Past features three brand new stories, one made exclusively for Nintendo DS." part. And the ". As an added bonus, Jake Hunter Detective Story: Memories of the Past includes the first three stories found in Jake's original adventure, all re-localized with creative imagination and flare. " part.

This means it will just be a re-localization of Tantei Jinguuji Saburou DS: Inishie no Kioku. With everything intact now. Which should be an OK buy now! (A bit disappointed it isn't the second DS game though, that was way better than the first one)

The gameplay is nothing like Phoenix Wright, which is why I never understand it when people compare the two games to each other. It's a visual novel intending to present a hard-boiled detective story mainly set in Shinjuku. It is a bit like the investigation modes of Phoenix Wright, where you walk around from screen to screen to proceed the story. People might complain the story is so rigidly set on rails, but that is just the way the genre works (c.f. Tantei Famicom Club).

Ah, 'kay.

Well, even if this isn't the 1st game, I guess they wanted to do a good job on the first game before moving on to the second? :yuusaku:

So it really is the first one? Cool. So where does one import Europe games? Playasia only does Asia/Japan and US games.

Well first of all it clearly has nothing to do with lawyers >_>

I've seen some sites for it and there were tons of fun-looking bonus cases that were removed in that localization of the first game. In fact, that was the only reason the game received so low, because the script was crap.

I meant is it the same sort of gameplay style as some of PW is? :)
Is the 2nd game meant to be a lot better then?
The IGN article doesnt mention a Europe release, only US?

I think using this topic is alright. I need help with the bonus case 5. I can't random guess two letters anymore. Some kind of hint be nice

here the puzzle for anyone who can solve it but don't have the game.

Spoiler: bonus case five
etlaoeosnvph
pienooignett
schpsdmepitm

downward stairs

btw you might have to c/p it to a word program to make the letters line up

The design is similar to another one I solved before but this one is totally different ><

Judgemaster64, did you get past that puzzle?

This game sort of makes me sad in a way. I considered Detective Chronicles to be okay, but Memories of the Past is so much better, and it's too bad that by releasing Detective Chronicles, Aksys have lessened the chance of any of the other games in the series being translated. Although the staff comments in game, do make it sound like they're open to translating more of the games.

Spoiler: Jake Hunter Unleashed 6: Mysterious Hotel.
Has anyone here managed to solve this case with Yulia as the partner? I can't get her to confirm Rosa's phone call (she follows Rosa whether you her pick as the partner or not), and as I've seen at least one other person apparently having the same problem, I'm wondering if there's a bug...

Yeah. I will try the unleased chapter 6 though I don't remember who I chose before.

Actually the first try isn't the problem. It's the slim to none advertisement of the second try is what making it bad. Not advertising that this is a better release of the first one instead of a sequel. People would probably be still hung up on how bad the first one was and not get the "second" one thinking it a sequal. Another problem is beside Aksys official site store, only Amazon seem to have the game for sale. No physical store nor any major online ones has it.

I'm not going to lie about this. One thing I absolutely hate about the PW fandom is that every time a new DS visual novel comes up, they expect PW-like gameplay.

I'm not saying this for everyone, of course, and I understand that a lot of people are pretty new to the VN category. Still, I get upset for some reason. Some people throw out the game (give it back or something) because it's not Phoenix Wright, I think. =/ Or, that it's not humorous (I swear, Game Informer expected HUMOR in a HARDBOILED story? Dark humor, perhaps. This is when they reviewed Detective Chronicles, by the way.)

Anywho, I never got to buy Detective Chronicles. I was confused as to why there were only three cases when there were six of them in the JP version, so I never bought it. I'm quite happy that Aksys revamped this one to Memories of the Past, though. :] I haven't read any reviews other than Nintendo Power's review (they say that they still could have done a better job with the script. Can anyone vouch for that?).

The script is a lot better, but there's quite a few spelling and grammatical errors, even though Aksys claimed that they reviewed the script for such errors throughly after the complaints leveled at Detective Chronicles. (I don't actually remember Detective Chronicles having so many errors, but it's been quite some time since I last played.)

The character's are a mainly a lot better with the new script. I can't help but feel Aksys were thinking of Kyle Hyde when they were re-writing Jake's lines, but he was so....perfectly polite generally, and quite honestly in my opinion rather bland in Detective Chronicles, it's definitely an improvement. Yulia on the other hand....can't quite say why, but she just....doesn't seem quite right somehow. Even though she was bland in Detective Chronicles as well. Unleashed Yulia is amazing though. :P

Aksys thinking of Kyle Hyde? That's a possibility, but the Jinguuji games, like Hotel Dusk, are hardboiled-style stories, and the main characters are typically not very polite.

Think noir, and you'll understand. :]

On that note, if you like Jake Hunter, I highly suggest Dashiell Hammett's books. The best one to start with is The Maltese Falcon. Surely that title rings a bell just a bit.... apparently the movie is considered the first film noir.

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll definitely check that book out. :edgy:

Sorry, I wasn't very clear in my previous post. What I meant was the Detective Chronicles Jake Hunter was very polite, and well spoken, and aside from making him seem very bland, his personality just didn't fit into the atmosphere of the game. Memories of the Past Jake Hunter, however, is much rougher with his speech, and reminded me of Kyle Hyde in someways. His new personality does fit the game much better, in my opinion.

You mean Jake WASN'T talking about cigs and scotch every other sentence?

That just isn't right.

Anyway, beat it, loved it, wasn't so keen on the linearity, but you learn to see it as reading a book. A damn GOOD book. Moar plz.

Oh, and obligatory "Rank the cases" time.

I'm thinking...

5, 1, 2, 4, 3, 6, in that order. 6 felt really tacked on due to it's short length, but I still had a deal of fun with it.

Oh, and Jake x Yulia is the sexiest, funniest, winnest couple ever. Fact.

Oh, and, considering this was a total relocalization, the abundance of typos seemed...weird, but the game was still fully legible, so that's a minor complaint at best.

You mean in JP? Nah, I'm sure he is always talking about smoking. A friend of mine on deviantArt has some kind of casebook or artbook or something that looks like a case file on the front, and the cover has a note to Jinguuji: "Smoking is BAD for you!" XDDD

Not even poor localization can beat Jake's cig addiction.

Oh, speaking of poor localization: Leaving the Japanese business card in case 6 was another one of those sloppy works.

Just about all the backgrounds remained un-graphic hacked from Japanese, too.

Nitpicky, yeah, and I appreciate that we finally got the whole game, but these guys still have a bit of brushing up to do, and I hope they can get it all in line by the time they decide to give us more translated Jake Hunter goodness.

I'm reviving this thread since I just beat the game. A shame this hasn't received much attention as it's a pretty good adventure game, really. Not to mention I'm an immediate sucker for hardboiled detective fiction.

The characters in Jake Hunter are your pretty stereotypical P.I. crew, but they definitely grow on you by the end of the game. The writing isn't necessarily amazing either, yet it tends to get better as it goes on, and you do get immersed in the world eventually. I just wished there had been a little bit more in the music selection.

I'm really hoping that Aksys will localize the second ds game, but I'm not holding my breath.

Amazon.com don't send video games to the UK (obviously) and the game looks OOP though Ebay has a copy I think.
