I Looked back 10 pages and couldn't find anything like this, if its not in the first ten pages, I doubt it is worth bringing back up.

So, Basically, say the toughest game you ever played. In Difficulty levels. If you wish it, you can say for which platform, which game.
And try to explain WHY, for example, 'The level layout is very complicated', 'The Hard mode is ruthless', 'The Controls are so broken I don't know what to do', etc.

For me, It would have to be...
ANIMAL CROSSING, nfor the reason that no matter how hard you try, you will ALWAYS end up with the droopy-eyed face, fugly hairstyle, and rubbish shirts. And you can only fix two of those things. To be truly satisfied in this game is sooo tough, that's why it's up there.

Kirby's Dream Land on Extra Mode.

Final Fantasy 2, just because the battle system of that game was so awful.

Super Ghouls N' Ghosts.

Also, I Wanna Be The Guy doesn't have real difficulty. The difficulty comes from a bugged engine and unresponsive controls. Also, throwing spikes into every room does not qualify as good game design that provides a good challenge. I admit it's frustrating, but it's a too terrible a game to even be considered difficult.

I tried playing Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn on Hard mode. You are massively outnumbered, AND the enemies are stronger than you. After dying several times within the first, like, five chapters I got too fustrated with it and lost interest.

Oh man, I have that game as well and it was really difficult. I've always found Fire Emblem to be one of the toughest game series out there. At least it's worth it when you beat it, since it's such a good series.

Ah, that game didn't come to my mind until now. I agree, Fire Emblem has a ton of difficulty. Even on Easy or Normal mode you force yourself to press the restart button over and over due to frustration. The enemies are tough enough, but the fact that your characters die permanently makes it even more challenging.

Also, some of the bosses in Final Fantasy XIII are pretty ridiculous....so are some of the extra l'Cie missions....

What do mean by "bugged engine" and "unresponsive controls"? Do you have any examples? I've played I Wanna Be The Guy and, depending on your definitions, may have never experienced either of these issues which calls into question whether the majority of the difficulty really does stem from faulty game design.

dullahan1 wrote:

You're exaggerating a very minor component of the game's level designs. Besides that, they're obstacles like anything else in the game and require a good deal of understanding their layouts and patterns to overcome. What is it about an infrequent and legitimate challenge that you feel "does not qualify as good game design"?

I've played through the game myself. My biggest concerns with the glitches for me was that I kept on clipping through platforms or the double jump would sometimes not activate when I'd hit the button. Sometimes, my first jump would end up registering as a double jump itself. I also noticed that, like Mega Man, he was allowed 3 shots on screen, however there were times where the game would only allow 2 at a time, but that's minor. I think the whole glitching through platforms and the double jump not working for me half of the time was what turned me off of the game the most. I had to stop playing 4 bosses in because half the time the game would constantly freeze as well and I just couldn't handle it anymore. And before you say anything, I was playing on Windows XP, but I never saw anything about compatibility issues on the site but it still came up for me.

As for the level design within the game itself, I will admit that some of the rooms were indeed unique, but to me, it really got monotonous fast. Have a fruit and hit you when you least expect it or a spike flies across the room to kill you. The only parts that really stood out to me were probably the moon chase and the tetris room. Those were probably the only things I found interesting within the game. When taking into account adding good difficulty with good level design, one of the most recent freeware games that I feel does this well is La Mulana. What I enjoy about it is that there are many puzzles to solve and death can ensue if you solve the puzzles wrong. What I like though is that each puzzle is different and hints are encrypted throughout the game to solve them. Eventually far enough, the game will frustrate you more in the fact that you'll have to solve certain puzzles to progress rather than killing you at every turn to halt your progress.

Honestly, whenever I beat a room in IWBTG, I never really felt any want to continue as I really wasn't having too much fun as it all really felt monotonous to me. Then again, this is only my opinion. I know there are people out there who like the game and I won't fault them for that. I just have my own legit reasons for hating it and I think I got far enough in the game before I was forced to give up because the game wouldn't want to work to allow to have my own legitimate opinion. I just don't put it up there as a challenging game for me because, for me, it has far too many faults to even want to work correctly.

Pshaw. I've beaten every single one of the Bit.Trip games currently released. I've got a PERFECT on Transition (1-1), Discovery (2-1), Control (2-3), Id (3-1), Ego (3-2), about half of Impetus (4-1), and about a quarter of Tenacity (4-2).

...whoa, nerd rant. Nobody knows what I'm talking about.

Edit: *looks up IWBTG* Oh, crap. Never mind, I'm beat.

Phantasy Star II.

This was my first RPG to conquer the high difficulty atmosphere of this sequel.
Spoiler:
-It was really hard to know the floors of the dungeons...you can never tell which part you teleported or fall in order to proceed through so many patterns. (Needed to print maps for this game back then...it was crazy.)
-I could not understand any of the items in which to use/equip. (Weird names like MONOMATE, NEIMET, HIDAPIPE etc.)
-PS-II didn't not have much bosses than PS-I, III, or IV...but most enemies are very overwhelming kill in later areas. (Mostly Robots and other stronger creatures)
-Leveling feels kind of strict (Max is LV.50)...its almost a bit similar to that of Dragon Quest II.
-Its painful to go back to other important places by walking through maze dungeons instead of teleporting to them.
-YOU CAN ALMOST NEVER FIND REVIVAL ITEMS. (A certain character can steal a revival item by going in and out of the SHOP many times...depends if you're lucky. :grey: )
-Just like the weird names of items and weapons, the magic spells were tricky to figure out. (Weird names like ZAN, FOI, SANER, SAR, etc.)
-Getting the rest of the characters is strange. After proceeding further in many parts in PS-II, you ALWAYS have to go back to the main characters hometown and they will knock at your door to join you.

Excuse me? Hector Hard Mode? Try Fire Emblem 6 Hard Mode. Having to lug around the ever-useless Roy everywhere quickly goes from irritating to mindnumbing. Or effin' Thracia 776. I almost cried...

I can name quite a few, but one that stands out is the second zelda title on the NES: the adventure of link.

It's a great game, but those knights are just downright horrible. They have faster reflexes than I will ever get. :beef:

I'd have to agree with the Fire Emblem comment; I beat the Hector mode on Hard without losing a single member, but for Fire Emblem 6...I swear I'm going to destroy whoever programmed Roy to be absolutely useless.

Also, Mushihimesama is almost impossible to beat; bullet hell is one thing, but this went WAAY overboard. Using an emulator (and losing a lot of my life), I actually beat the last boss once without dying. I still can't believe I did it and I tried again and again...never will it happen again X_X

I found Zelda II difficult, but seeing as how you actually get stronger by grinding, I can't really qualify it as "frustrating". After grinding for a while, the bosses just became a lot easier. Of course, without the downward cleave I really hated those knights and axe swinging things.

If you flood the screen with antibiotic gel, the DS can't handle the amount of particles and hence slows down, saving you time.

I've managed to complete every MGS game without killing anyone...bar one. Metal Gear Solid 3 made me want to destroy something after all my 4 playthroughs of it, and then realising that I didn't get the FOXHOUND rating. I'm gonna go for another playthrough in a few days, and hope for the love of god, that I manage it without breaking my television

I don't know, that's the problem. No matter what I do, I always end up somehow killing someone. Once was by accident, while the rest, I don't even remember killing anyone. And yes, MGS 3 wasn't particularly hard, it's just that one thing that annoys the hell outta me. I know it's after The Sorrow though for obvious reasons.

X1 and X5 (Pempti) are the hardest in my opinion. But in one point when you've played them enough you just feel it in your gut that you'll own them, and that's when you've mastered the game :godot:

I'd seen this thread before but was never sure what to post in it. Then I realized what I'm playing right now. Kid Chameleon for the Sega Genesis. I got up to the final boss once but couldn't beat it. I'm trying again. Oh, and I forgot to mention I could only get that far by using incredibly stupid amounts of save states on an emulator. the game is insane!

I meant to mention this weeks ago but couldn't find the words to express it, so here I go:

Advance Wars' Advance Campaign

I know there are some people on CR who've played it, myself included. And if you've played it, you know exactly what I'm talking about. For those who haven't played the game, it's a lot like Fire Emblem (both games are developed by the same design team) but with contemporary armies (tanks, infantry, fighter jets, aircraft carriers, etc.) replacing the knights, wizards, thieves, and all that fantasy junk of yesteryear.

Anyway, the game has two campaigns that you can play through. The default campaign isn't legitimately difficult provided that you're skilled at manipulating the AI's movements. However, the Advance Campaign is where the difficulty escalates from "oh" to "WHOA" at the speed of light; and that's an understatement! I know some people who have spent an entire year simply trying to beat that monster of a campaign let alone achieve the highest or perfect score! Unlike the Normal Campaign where you can make a few blunders and scrape by with a decent score, everything you do in Advance Campaign has to be done with perfect accuracy. You have to know exactly how the AI will interpret your moves, base your strategy around that, and complete each mission within a time limit that crosses the line into outright comedic.

Another problem you run into is the AI itself which will either act accordingly to your movements or do something unexpected and botch your plan, forcing you to restart the mission. Some missions even have you facing an enemy who will always act at random regardless of where you move your units.

Here's the final mission of the Advance Campaign:

You're the red army. The enemy is the green army. So, you're outnumbered 1:7 in units and are bringing in 5000 less funds to produce units at the fucking outset with an AI more unpredictable than a schizophrenic with a sugar addiction.

But you wanna hear a kicker? That's not the real map! No sir, it would be too easy to actually see the enemy units. No, here's the real deal:

Yeah, you're not imagining that image. That's FoW, a mechanic in the game that prohibits you from seeing the enemy units; not that it stops them from knowing the exact location of your units even when they're out of the enemy's range of vision. And did I mention that more than HALF of the Advance Campaign maps are covered in the stuff?

To recap: you're fighting bafflingly unpredictable AI's that grossly outnumber you, with very few opportunities to rebuild destroyed units, based around strategies that require NASA precision to perform in environments that impair your mobility and attacking capacity while the AI suffers NO disadvantages?

Fuck that! It would be easier to beat Hotel Dusk by pissing off Dunning than to beat this slice of video game hell. To this day I still haven't beaten it and my life is more accomplished without.

CASTLEVANIA X68000 (I played it in Castlevania Chronicles for PS1)

Medusa, Death, and Dracula on 2nd form gave me problems. However, after beating the original mode I decided to take on arrange mode and successfully beat it in one swoop. (I lost 5 lives during my run...but no GAME OVER)

You thought you could be safe in your courts, with your laws and attorneys to protect you. In this world only I am law, my word is fact, my power is absolute.

Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia on hard mode. I'm pretty new to this franchise so sorry if I sound like a n00b.

Also a Tetris/Super Mario Bros. crossover game that I played on Newgrounds was hard as ass. Blocks fell down while you played the first SMB stage - you could press a button to switch to controlling the blooks a la Tetris - but then Mario would stand still and be vulnerable to enemies and blocks. A lot of things to look at, in other words.
