Agreed XD
Though I've liked all of them I played....unfortunately my brother deleted my Paper Mario save so I've never had the heart to go back to it.

Out of curiosity would Super Paper Mario count seeing as it's part of the Paper Mario team?

If not then I suppose my favourite was.....Partners in Time.
Though does anyone know if the 3DS game is going to be a remake of the first or a brand new one?

SPM is more of a platformer than a RPG (albeit having elements of RPGs).

It's a completely new game.

Ugh, the problem with PiT is that boss battles dragged for too long and turned into chores. :/

With great pleasure. I love (most of) these games! :larry2:

That wasn't the only problem it had. Poor writing, an even worse plot, and ho-hum music made this very disappointing for me back in the day. Then again, I believe the Mario and Luigi sub-series dropped straight off a cliff after the original, but I'm in a serious minority on that one.

I wouldn't know anything about the Mario and Luigi series outside of what little I know about Bowser's Inside Story.

The only flaw SPM had was naming it Paper Mario. If it had a different name, people would stop saying it's a bad game. Some fans of the PM series are claiming SPM is the worst of the RPG series because: A.) They were expecting a RPG Paper Mario, not a platformer with RPG elements B.) They were disappointed of it having the Paper Mario label on it and it wasn't a RPG.

I think Bowser's Inside Story did a fine job climbing back to the top of that cliff.

I knew what kind of game I was getting, but I still felt underwhelmed. Not to sound like a broken record, but I also believe the music and writing were weaker in this game than in other Paper Mario games. The quality of writing/music is about as subjective as a thing can be, though, so that's just my opinion. The plot itself was undoubtedly far more epic in scale than that of TTYD, but I just couldn't get into it.

On a more substantive note, I think the battle system is pretty lopsided. It's way too easy to win battles when you can just "Attack, attack! Retreat, retreat!" and the enemy can hardly even get a hit in on you. I don't know, though, some people might say that's a feature of this kind of game (action-RPG whatever).

Scent wrote:

I respectfully disagree (though I admit to not completing the game). My reasons are more of the same, though, so I probably shouldn't have brought it up in the first place, because subjective stuff is SUBJECTIVE! :meekins:

I could have just saved time by saying I haven't truly loved a Mario RPG since TTYD (all the way back in 2004 :sadshoe:). I anticipate Paper Mario 3DS with guarded optimism. Returning to a true RPG format is a great first step, but that doesn't guarantee success.

My thoughts on each game that I've played:

Super Mario RPG - Kind of overrated, I can't help but think that this is one of those games that people love simply because it was the first. Still playable, but nowhere near the later games.

Paper Mario - My favorite Mario RPG ever. It's plain awesome, and just writing about it takes me back.

M&L: Superstar Saga - Never got that far, but I enjoyed it and had a few laughs.

Paper Mario: TTYD - A bit overrated, but only because it borrows too much from the N64 one (then again, this is Nintendo we're talking about). The writing is top-notch, but once you've mastered it, the battles are monotonous and tedious. It also has lots of sidequests which is a great thing. This was probably my favorite GameCube game aside from Pikmin 2 and maaaybe TLoZ: The Wind Waker.

M&L: Bowser's Inside Story - Way too easy. I didn't like the humour either. Playing as Bowser made it good though. SHOW TIME, bitches.

From the looks of it, Paper Mario 3D has a very different (but still similar) gameplay to that of traditional PM games. Apparently, now you have to buy your attack options.

I read somewhere that it looked like PM3DS uses SPM graphics with the original PM battle style.

Yeah, it does seem quite different in various ways. The Chain Chomp we've seen in some screenshots doesn't look like a "traditional" partner (i.e. a Mario enemy touched up with unique characteristics to distinguish them from others of the same kind). I'm also pretty skeptical that they would just make a (seemingly) random Toad a permanent partner, but I guess we'll see. Again, Mario's partners usually have distinct appearances, but maybe they've decided to throw that convention out.

As for buying attack options, yup, looks like it. Based on that, plus the fact that a jump and hammer sticker are each only 1 coin whereas a mushroom and fire flower are each 5 coins, I think you might actually have to buy "chances" to attack, with the number of times you can use a given move directly linked to how many stickers of it you have. Since the jump and hammer are your fundamental attacks, they only cost one coin each, but others could be more expensive. Who knows, though, just my speculation.

@Graphics: Yeah, PM3D's supposed to have SPM's level of graphics.
@Partners: We can't say much right now, maybe they're placeholders for the true appearance of partners? They could still be discussing their designs.

Man...dishing out money to buy attacks? Like every turn?
I'd prefer flowerpoints over it but hopefully money is plentiful XD.

Still don't know why people are complaining about SPM. Luigi was FREAKING PLAYABLE, and important to the plot too :gant:

Game was freaking sold for me on that point and it was a perfectly fine platformer, nice callback to the original Mario.

Also maybe I'm just not picky enough to be worried about PiT, and I felt BiS was pretty awesome too, again playing as Bowser was really incredible especially the final battle with all it's wondrous music and Fawful XD.

Though I would complain about how samey the backgrounds in BiS were....then again they ARE inside Bowser....who has warp holes to the mushroom kingdom in his body.... :yuusaku:

What's stupid of SPM is that they didn't get that Mr. L was actually Luigi, I mean, that's pathetic (even for Nintendo logic)...

Well Mario's a silent protaganist XD maybe he did.

And did it really bother you that much? I assumed they just played it for laughs.

Besides Mr L IS the total opposite personality wise of Luigi and then you consider the other plumbers (Wario Waluigi? Maybe not plumbers) all wear variations of the same mario outfit so a new evil person with a new outfit who acts nothing like Luigi may be nothing new.

XD Though I still think they just played it for laughs and we were supposed to figure it out the whole way.

Geez man XD These are basic things in comedy bits where any disguise is almost worthy.

Kanji wore them best.
Though I don't know, Luigi has always held a big place in my heart guess that's why I liked it so much that he got a large role even if it is mostly as a dashing mysterious Mr L.

He's adorkable =D Luigi is like my favourite fellah, got more personality than the others.
Plus thought it was hilarious in....Partners in Time I think when the big door was like "YOU HAVE SUCH DARK SECRETS IN YOUR HEART" though I think it turned out....his heart was pure? And it was just a test....memory fails me.

Paper Mario was my childhood in the early 2000s. I must've beaten that game and done EVERYTHING in it at least 5 times. TTYD is my favorite though.

I didn't beat Superstar Saga, though I enjoyed it a lot. I skipped PiT since I didn't hear good things about it. I beat Bowser's Inside Story. Playing as Bowser was awesome and it was totally fun, but the writing isn't nearly as good as what I'm used to in Mario RPGs.

The only bad thing about PiT is that the Shroob boss battles tend to be long and turn into a chore. The very first Shroob boss is longer than Cackletta's ghost in the first game. ">>

I can't wait for Paper Mario 3DS - I hope it has a darker story like TTYD and SPM. TTYD was one of my favourite games :D I loved the twists in it and the repartee with your partners.

In TTYD I loved the Glitz Pit level, Jolene's story and the part when Dooplis steals your body - pretty creepy :o

I got straight away that Mr. L was Luigi, or at least.. kinda LOOKED like Luigi, but mostly I was thinking "WTF has happened, Luigi has been brainwashed?" And I liked the way the game prophecy said things about a "man in red/man in green" etc, which alluded to Mario/Luigi facing off against each other. And they kind of did....

Doopliss stealing your body isn't from the Glitz Pit level. ^^

But yeah, that was my favorite chapter as well. The mystery, the increasingly creepy atmosphere, Macho Grubba... It was just awesome.
