I don't think I can describe this game much better than HH did before.

Quote:
By being western-made (as in not actually Japanese), fusing moe archetypes with disabilities both symbolic to the characters' faults and added for extra gimmick, Katawa Shoujo should be a bad Visual Novel.

So why is it so good?

The answer is that it's done by a ridiculously professional team, the "gimmick" is handled tastefully and almost maturely, and the characters themselves actually end up standing out in part of their disabilities, which surprisingly enhances them from being cliches. Weird right? Well it's pretty fun. The "demo" is out and it's roughly ten hours long. Seriously.

Get it here.

http://katawashoujo.blogspot.com/

To reiterate, it's an English-made visual novel that's being released for free. The full game should be released soon, but feel free to play the demo now, as it is the entirety of ACT ONE. Your saved game will transfer to the final product easily.

The full game was released a few days ago, obtained via the same site, for free. Having played through two of the five routes available now, I can safely say the rest of the acts maintain the same high quality writing as the demo. The characters are deep, realistic, endearing, and it's easy to look past their disabilities once you get to know them.

When I saw the title I was thinking it would be some kind of disability-orientated fighter. Though what kinda visual novel is it romance? Drama? What genre is the story.

I'd say it's mostly a blend of romance and drama.

The gist of the story is the lead character gets a severe heart attack and due to his late discovery of Arrythmia, he's forced to transfer to a school for the disabled. Once there, he meets a bunch of girls with their own disabilities which he befriends, and depending on the right choices, will romance them.

Even with all the positive hype I'd heard about the game beforehand, I was suprised at just how good it is. I really can't add much to what's already been said other than I got it Friday and would have played it nonstop if I didn't have to work and such. Even the one H-scene I've come across so far was pretty tastefully done (and hey, you can turn them off in the options if they aren't your thing).

Skyward Sword got put on the backburner for Katawa Shoujo. I'm ridiculous for Zelda, so that says something right there.

Now y'see I've heard it's a romance/drama game and a visual novel which may be prone to having sex scenes in it

Also that the guy has heart issues...

I don't know if you're joking, telling the truth or it has both sex scenes with heart attacks in it. :yuusaku:

Well I haven't 100%-ed the game yet so I can only speak for what I've played (most of Rin's story including a couple endings and a little bit of another route), but:

Yes, romance/drama VN would be accurate, maybe toss in a sprinkle of comedy but don't expect constant luls like with Ace Attorney

Yes, Hisao (the main guy) has a bad heart and has at least one attack

Yes there's sex scenes, although I wouldn't say the game is "prone" to them as the few I did encounter were near the end of the game (not going to say how many, NO SPOILERS 4 U). I will say that I did not encounter a scene where Hisao has an attack in the middle of the act or anything like that, but it may be in one of the paths I haven't explored yet.

What sex scenes I did get felt, as I mentioned before, tasteful, and a natural part of the story, which suprised me a bit considering how other games and anime and such tend to just slap you in the face with it (then again I don't really watch or play much porn either so what do I know). I almost feel like I shouldn't really address it other than to warn people about it, not because I personally have a problem with it, but more because it almost feels like an insult to a game like this, with its touching story and wonderful characters, to focus on the sex.

I've been playing this for the last 3 days, so far I've only finished Shizune's (Deaf-girl's) path. I like her most so far because she has authority and a competitive spirit.

As for the sex scenes...I dunno, I felt they were kinda shoehorned in even though they were done tastefully...

It's a decent game. From what I hear, the blind girl's story is the best: it's so good that you would never want to play another path again.

KS is lovely, contains a lot of genuinely touching stuff. Each girl is a interesting and often deep character, with her own personalities, her own desires...her own traumas.
Sex scenes are meh if fap material is what you're looking for, but you should be playing it for the story anyway.

also Hanako's path is best path

You'll be saying that for every girl's path you complete. I'm on Shizune's now, and I still want to be able to do Lilly's and Hanako's path at the same time because I can't bear to let them face their problems on their own.

no way guys Rin is the best

I knew her story was good when I finished it, but I guess it didn't really hit me as to HOW good until I found myself spending most of last night unable to sleep because I couldn't stop thinking about it.

Spoiler: DON'T READ UNTIL YOU'RE DONE WITH RIN
The oddball, quirky character usually ends up being a fan-favorite, but having an actual relationship with someone like that would not only be hard but emotionally painful as hell, and Rin's story does nothing to sugarcoat that fact. I constantly found myself sympathizing with both Hisao for not being able to understand Rin, nor seemingly able to reach her; and Rin for not being able to express herself in ways Hisao can understand. No copout ending here, either: it's clear by then that they both have strong feelings for each other, but they might just be too different to be together. Still, there's that sliver of hope that maybe they can find a way to work things out after all.

This game keeps blowing my mind, I think I'm going to have to take some time off before I'm emotionally prepared to take another path.

I really enjoyed it. Very well-done, and the subject matter was handled perfectly.

Also, my preference of heroine changed; in the demo, I was very impressed with Shizune, and somewhat indifferent to Emi.
In the full thing, I was most unimpressed by Shizune's route, and pleasantly surprised with Emi! Her route had the 'just right' mix of drama, humour and love.

Lilly's route was indeed awesome. It was soppy (from my point of view), but I'll be damned if I didn't love every minute of it. Also, interesting comparison between Lilly and Emi's route:

Spoiler: Lilly and Emi Route spoilers
In Emi's route, the titular heroine fobs off people who wish to get closer, as she doesn't want to be 'rescued' or pitied. She also tries to dispel any worry for her.

In Lilly's route, Hisao constantly fobs off Lilly and her worrying nature, only for it to backfire when she decides to leave for Scotland. Of course, it takes another heart attack for him to realise that it's not bad to have people worry (or cry) over you, and for her to realise how much they need each other.

All in all, a really enjoyable game.

I downloaded it the other day and I absolutely love it~ I've only played Emi's path so far but I found her so adorable that I almost feel like Hisao's being disloyal to her on my second playthrough XD
Spoiler:
although I found the anal sex kind of unnecessary in Emi's storyline
I think I'm headed for either Rin or Lilly's path next, though I was kind of after Hanako.

I'd say save Rin for last. General consensus seems to be that while all the girls' stories tug at the heartstrings, Rin's ties them to her car bumper and takes them for a drive. I know it took me a good two days to recover enough to touch the game again.

Also unfortunately that article brought the game to light, including comparison to Rapelay which doesn't sound pleasant.

*facepalm*

The problem is that that article has lots of half-truths and inconsistencies (but that usually happens in incidents like this)

But of all games to demonize, why this one...? =\

(There's always some other problem that the teenager had when this stuff happens; it's not the video game alone. Well first of all, he had a friend who was perfectly fine with chopping off his friend's arms; I say something's wrong with that other kid, too. And second, it said that he had drank to the point of passing out. That's, um, not good.)

........This is not going to be good press for (I forget the developer's name). I hope it doesn't hit them too badly =\

EDIT: Putting Ping''s hilarious comment here, b/c I don't think he's going to post it:
Ping' wrote:
