....Nintendo is working on a gameplay system meant to ease the pain of completing a difficult game, without watering it down so much that it turns hardcore gamers off.
The new system, described in a patent filed by Nintendo Creative Director Shigeru Miyamoto on June 30, 2008, but made public today, looks to solve the issue of casual gamers losing interest in a game before they complete it, while still maintaining the interest of hardcore gamers.

The solution would turn a game into a full-length cut scene of sorts, allowing players to jump into and out of the action whenever they wanted. But when played this way, gamers would not be able to save their progress, maintaining the challenge of completing a game without skipping or cheating. It would also allow players to bring up in-game hint videos and skip directly to particular scenes in games....

I suppose in theory it'd work, and it'd draw more "casuals" in...but seems like a pretty stupid idea to me.

*scratches head*

I don't... understand. Does a specific example exist? Wait.

*goes to read article to see if it's made more clear*

Edit: Ok, now it makes more sense. The idea is... interesting I guess. But this concerns me:

Quote:
Of course, that's the best case scenario. The worst, is that this turns gaming into an interactive cut-scene, removing all of pleasure of achievement from gaming and instead turning it into a glorified demo.

That seems like a very real possibility and doesn't sound good at all.

This is an awful idea in roughly ten ways.

Don't even say "you don't have to do it if you don't have to", because the sole factor of it having to be there is retarded in the first place.

No, you don't. But I like the difficulty in games. What's the point if anyone can just watch?

It's one thing making most of their games horribly easy, but I think this move is going a bit over the top.

Luckily this only applies to the Wii, DS and future Nintendo consoles, and pretty much all of Nintendo's first party games have been easy or total shit for years, with the only exceptions being the ones with broken gameplay (like Mario Kart Double Dash).

First party games were generally okay, really. Galaxy, Twilight Princess, and the occassional stupid stuff like Wii Music. It's just that there aren't much made anymore.

I know it is a cliche, but WHAT THE HELL ARE THEY SMOKING? :toaster:

Honestly, Metroid Prime's 'go to this room and do something' system is good enough for most gamers, so why come out with this?

i'm one of those people who gives up on games if they can't do it.
like i gave up on trauma center (i can't draw circles so i gave up at the very begining).
probably why my favourite games are things like PW and pokemon.

but i still think this is a stupid idea.

I usually only stop playing a game if it's incredibally hard. But most games i play until i beat it. I spent one year beating Jumping Jack Flash on Sweatin' on EBA.

Yeah, this is a pretty horrible idea...

I really don't care, because I'm just going to play it and not use the cutscenes...

but it's still a stupid idea.

(but seriously: you don't have to use it if you don't want to. Why get so worked up over someone else spending $50 for a glorified cutscene if you can have a good game?)

Well if Nintendo does use this idea I hope they DO get a patent for it. Hopefully that way other companies won't use this idea.
