And I thought Professor Layton vs. Ace Attorney was a random crossover.

Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u34bzH5Eo04

Spoiler: What we know so far:
This is the latest Pokemon spinoff game to be announced, set for release in Japan on Spring 2012. It is a crossover between the Pokemon and Nobunaga's Ambitions series. Nobunaga's Ambition is an almost 30-year old series of games where you take over Feudal Japan. From what I can tell, the gameplay is a turn-based strategy RPG not unlike that of Fire Emblem or Advance Wars. The twist here is that Pokemon are being used for battle instead of regular soldiers.

Oda Nobunaga was an actual Japanese warlord, all of the Nobunaga's Ambition games take after his conquests and the various people involved. In this game in particular, he is portrayed as an antagonist and has a Zekrom by his side. Other characters include Oichi, a character who helps you in the game, paired with Jigglypuff, in real life she was Nobunaga's younger sister and she was apparently famed for her beauty; Mitsuhude, a character teamed with Articuno, who was one of Nobunaga's generals who betrayed him later; Shingen, a character teamed with Groudon, a rival warlord; and Kenshin, a character teamed with Mewtwo, he was another rival warlord and considered the most powerful of his time. It's not guaranteed that these characters will follow history in this game though.

The game takes place in the 'Ranse' region, which resembles Feudal Japan. There are 17 kingdoms within this region, presumably one for each type. The player can choose between male and female with both receiving Eevee for a starter, which implies they are from the Normal Kingdom.

Interesting to note is how this game is coming out for the regular Nintendo DS and not the 3DS as one would naturally believe. Capcom thought the DS had already died out but this game might prove them wrong, it's a stretch but assuming this game gets localized (which is probable given the heavy buzz it's receiving) then perhaps other DS games that have previously gone unlocalized for the DS (AAI2 for instance) will have a chance too.

The initial reaction to this was gold, I say. Gold.

That said, looks pretty neat. Gives off more of a Final Fantasy Tactics Advance vibe than FE or AW, though I'm sure that's partly the artstyle.

I'm not sure....that big where Hideyoshi appeared on screen with whirling speed lines behind him looks suspiciously like a CO power to me.

I wonder if Muneshige will be in it....and if he'll have some blatantly wind themed pokemon.

A lot of people have been wondering why/how Mewtwo is in this game when it takes place in Feudal Japan (because, as you may remember, Mewtwo was created through genetic engineering processes). I would just like to clarify here that even if they choose not to explain it (which they totally could by using something like time travel or maybe an attempt to summon Mew via magic gone wrong), it still makes sense for them to have put Mewtwo there. This is because the man depicted with him, Uesugi Kenshin, was a warlord who held the actual Kanto region of Japan. So it fits that they give him the most powerful Pokemon from the Pokemon version of the Kanto region.

I'm amused at how many people are getting up in a tiff about that. Simplest explanation: he's there because it's a Pokemon spinoff game, and Pokemon spinoff games have never shied away from completely breaking with the main series plot.

Who says this is a spinoff? There is time travel in the pokemon universe with...Celebi? Also one of the regions IS called Kanto.

My Conclusion: Kanto in pokemon is just Kanto in the real word after Pokewars have ravaged and changed the landscape.

Though I've always felt pokemon needed a big war, think about it we have creatures capable of MASSIVE destruction, Solar beams, Hyper Beams, some capable of going Godzilla on a city and yet they obey humans. I still reckon Kanto and Johto had an epic war to decide their borders. That's the kinda pokemon game I'd like to play. Taking control of a young Kantoian/Johto'ian soldier fighting alongside his pokemon with his rifle.

It's a spinoff the way Pokemon Ranger is also a spinoff, that is, it can reasonably fit within the main games' canon but it's a spinoff in that the gameplay/creative team/story direction is different. It's also similar to Mystery Dungeon in that it took a somewhat obscure-in-the-West series of video games and combined it with Pokemon.

I...I want this game. :lana:

A very interesting crossover!! I heard of the Nobunaga Ambition series, but never played them. (I also think Romance of the Three Kingdoms has the same gameplay too...)

I really hope for an english release...I have been noticing many other games are not being localized for some reason.

War has changed.

It's not about nations, or ideologies.
It's not even about profit, resources, or ethnicity.

It's an endless series of pokemon battles,
fought by Team Rocket and Ten year olds.

War, and its vast mistreatment of animals,
has become a rational, well-oiled gym battle.

War has changed.

ID-tagged children command ID-tagged pokemon,
use ID-tagged poke'gear.

Rare Candies inside their bodies
enhance and overpower their actions.

Move control.. Ability control..
EV control.. Stat control.

Everything is monitored, and kept under control.

War has changed.

The age of slaughter is now the age of friendship,
averting catastrophes from Legendary Pokemon.

And he who is the very best, like no one ever was, controls history.

War has changed.

When the fighters cannot die,

war becomes routine.

War has changed. Pokemon has changed.

Well then, I guess this game takes place before all that stuff happens, eh?

So it seems there is still hope for the DS market after all! This game is now coming out as Pokemon Conquest! Despite them removing Nobunaga's name from the title, it seems the game is still going to retain every characters' name in order to preserve the Japanese history and culture. This has only been announced for release in the US so far and it comes out June 18th!

Here is a link to the English trailer.

Oh I remember this game from a while ago, back when it was just called "Pokemon Sengoku Crossover" or something like that. Good to know it's being localized here and for the DS (since I'm not hip enough to get a 3DS).

It was originally called Pokemon + Nobunaga's Ambition. Because that's what it is.

According to Nintendo president Satoru Iwata:
Quote:
The tutorial and story have been designed so that Pokémon fans new to the genre can naturally understand and enjoy the gameplay as the story unfolds. Additionally there are plenty more scenarios to play after completing the main game, so strategy fans will also have plenty to challenge them too.

So no need to worry!

I heard about this coming out from a friend, I'm frankly surprised that it's getting localized, but I swear that nintendo is killing itself by releasing all these games for the DS instead of 3DS >.>

But yeah, being a feudal warlord with a Zekrom? I'm totally cool with this.

Remember that the original Nintendo DS came out in 2004 and didn't get a Pokémon game until 2007 or 2006 if you count Mystery Dungeon and even earlier if you count things like Pokémon Trozei or Dash...

This means the real transition to 3DS won't be until 2014.

the 3DS got rumble blast though, even if it barely counts as a pokemon game lol

Picked it up earlier today actually and I can't say that I'm impressed, but...

Hopefully this game'll have a 3DS sequel eventually, I'm just excited at how soon it's coming out. We got this in June, and BW2 only a couple months after that. It's a great year to be a pokemon fan xD
