You know, it's times like these that I really wish I knew Japanese.

I was checking out the Japanese iTunes store to see if GS123 HD had been updated ( I don't get update notifications because my primary account isn't Japanese.) And I discovered 2 things.

#1. An iPhone port of the Android Port of GS123 HD (Which is a port of the DS games, which was a port of the GBA games @_@)

#2. Another game from Capcom that I guess is called Edotan. Which is blatantly inspired by Ace Attorney

http://translate.google.com/translate?s ... D8&act=url

Judging by the Google Translation of the App, you play as Miria, a high school student, and get transported into the Edo era of Japan. There you investigate crimes, but using your current knowledge of the era and some modern investigative conveniences like Luminol and Finger Printing give the game a nice change of feel from what the game could've been.

Honestly, it looks like a TON of fun. Here's a sample of what I was able to rip. I can rip more, and the soundtrack if anyone's interested.

If you can't see how these images the Ace Attorney inspired I invite you to play the games!

Huh. What do you know. They blink. Seems you can either get Bug-Free Blinking animations, or complex animations from Capcom, but not both on iOS. But anyways, you should watch the protagonist. It's hard to tell from the sprite sheet, but he looks in game like he's reenacting a lot of Phoenix's poses. Some how, I'm going to make sure I get him behind a court desk.

They'd better bring it out over here so that Croik can fall in love with it and create a subsite for it.

Instant buy if it comes to America. I love Ace Attorney, and I love Japenese history. Put the 2 together, and this is my dream come true.

I'm not sure if it's on the fast track to get released here. It was last updated in May 2011, and... if I'm reading the blog correctly, the earliest entree was in Feb 2010. So it's somewhere close to between 1 and 2 years old.... still I wouldn't object in the least if Capcom decided they wanted to bring it over... *wink* *wink* *nudge* *nudge*

Also, I'm not entirely sure if this is a port of an older game or not. The screen ratio is odd. Also, there are a lot of little things that make me think that this game is using at least, an older version of the engine that powers GS123 HD. (Admittedly, I'm mostly the sprite sheets and the frame-y transitions)

Well Woost, if it doesn't come over here, maybe we can hold out hope for an update that adds blinking and fixes some of the translation issues in GS123HD

I've had Edotan (for those not familar with Japanese: it's a contraction of Edo and Tantei (detective)) on my iPod for ages, but haven't played too much of it. It's a port of a cellphonegame and as far as I have played (someway into the first (free) chapter), it's just a standard command-style adventure, though pretty well-made.

Edit: ^ it's also available on Android, I think. And if you're in Japan, also through your regular carriers like DoCoMo or Softbank...

Hmm, a cell phone port. That would explain the strange screen ratio that doesn't match up in landscape or portrait.

So what did you think of the game Ash? Did it meet your expectations for the genre or...?

Anyways, I've played a bit more since I made my original post. It still frustrates me to be playing past all that dialog and not comprehending any of it. (Though at the same time, I don't think I'd like to play with a guide, I tend to read too far ahead and then spoil my self perpetually.) But despite not comprehending any of it, I'm kinda enjoying it.

The game starts out on some street in Japan, I assume. And then Miria plays with... what my first guess is an Aztec cellphone charm (?) and then is transported into the Edo era. At this point, the prologue is over, and the game begins.

The chapter starts with a murder cut scene, it is sort of reminiscent of the Frank Sawit murder, as mentioned, but a lot more bloody, and with a turnabout.

Then you meet a guy who looks like he's Miria's age. I'm going to refer to him as Dash since he has a "-" in his name, and that's all I can identify, and calling him "That guy you ran into over at the beginning and sticks with you" doesn't flow. (Yay illiteracy!) Dash has a lot of animations that are almost identical to Miria's. (This is further emphasized when a girl talks with the two, and then Dash and Miria cycled through all their the identical animations at the same time. It's hysterical!) I wouldn't be surprised if Dash is Miria's ancestor. (Maybe you get to thwart your great-great-great-great grandfather's murder in this game to avert a paradox? That'd be AWESOME).

Anyways, Dash won't let you progress until you answer/ask a few questions, and then examine the murder scene. I want to say that part was just like Ace Attorney, but, for the life of me, I can't remember a point where in AA you get to examine a murder scene and the dead body is still there, and you aren't rushed out by the police. I did like the murder scene, it gave you all the clues you needed to prove what you already knew from the opening cut scene. But no more then that.

After that, you're allowed to explore the village(?) with Dash. Moving around is just like in Ace Attorney, you can only visit areas through a list that's adjacent to the area you're in. From here you can see and interview more people and places.

... and that's as far as I got.

From what I can gather from the official website, the hero's name is Mirai, not Miria. It actually means "future". His father is a forensic scientist. And the other guy, Imaichi (admittedly, "Dash" sound cooler) is indeed his ancestor and it's also said that he looks identical to Mirai.

Pffft, not only that, but the first kanji in Imaichi's name is the kanji for "now" xD

I remember seeing this being advertised with the original iPhone port of the first game! I thought it looked interesting but I couldn't install it on my iPod because it was too old :payne:

One interesting thing to note about the names is, like AA, they seem to be puns.
"Mirai" means "future", "Imaichi" can mean "the other" (possibly to reference the fact that him and Mirai are identical), and Imaichi's mother is named "Kako", which means "the past".

I had a go at translating Mirai's bio:
Tendou Mirai
A high school student who loves reading mystery novels and longs to be a detective.
His father is a Forensic Officer.
One day, Mirai suddenly travels back to the Edo Period to challenge the case!

Let me know if you want the others translated.

Looks interesting. If anything the main character is basically a male version of Ema Skye, no? Does it also have some sort of court / confrontation system to prove the murderer, or is it purely investigation?

Hard to say if there's a confrontation phase or not. I just got past what I assume is part one. (Not to be confused with Case 1, think of all the times in AA where the game prompts you to save). Haven't found the bad guy yet. So there's nothing to confront anyone about. Though, there were a couple of times where the mood and music changed... My first thought was something like in Trace Memory or Hotel Dusk where the protagonist goes over the facts he or she knows so far, but it was rather brief.

Though, there's a lot of "Game Over" PNGs in the game files, so I'm sure I'll run into something that'll test the player. I just haven't run into it yet.

Anyways, Das-I mean, Imaichi and the girl who pointed out Mirai appears to have the same expressions as he, have ganged up on Miria and there was a lot of struggling, flashing of the screen, and what I assume was a lot of unhappy screams... When the screen returned, Miria was dressed in era appropriate garb. The girl also threatened to give Mirai an era appropriate haircut. He declined, a lot.

(Man, I really want some localized names for these folks)

Anyways, at this point, the game stops using Sherlock Holmes for menu navigation and starts using... the running man from Okami? Here's some before and after resources...

So far, Imaichi hasn't let Mirai out of his custody. I don't get the vibe that Miria is a serious suspect, more like having a police officer as a defense aid. Considering Imaichi has the same outfit as an older gentleman who appears to be in management, I'm fairly sure he's a member of law enforcement, and not necessarily a suspect as I originally guessed.

Got any of those Game Over images?

I've got a thing for well-done Game Over sequences.

If you're talking about that "Minna no Igiari" app, a. it's not a port of GS123HD, it's an app made to advertise the movie that includes a demo of the first case, and b. AFAIK it's been on both iOS and Android for a while. The iPhone version was just updated to add support for a certain e-mail provider.

Wow, so not even a cut-scene or anything? The screen just goes black, the words flash, and that's it?

Hmmmm, this looks interesting.

But it'll never be outside iOS, they probably won't localise it and we would lose another fine game.
