So anyone else playing this? I just bought it yesterday and I'm on chapter 5 of Gwen's story.

I really like it so far. The alchemy took a while to get the hang of, and the combat certainly isn't brilliant, but the art is amazing and the story is...not awesome, but enough to keep me interested. I haven't had any lag trouble yet, which a lot of reviews mentioned.

I have a question for people who are further than me: when you move on to the next character, do your stats carry over? Do you have to relearn your recipes and alchemy spells? Should I try to max out Gwen before I get to the end of her story, or will I be able to come back later if I want? Advice plz!

I wish those sprites were rippable. They're so fantastic. :adrian:

The sprites should be rippable, PS2 emulators work pretty well actually <.<

I have yet to try the game, I've waited for some more response from people, so far I've only heard good, one vote of good from Croik and one vote of good from Gameinformer.

You can come back to the other books at later times, I know that much. The other stuff I don't, but I would assume that you'd keep all of your recipes and alchemy scrolls.

I'm currently on a bit of a break from Odin Sphere--I liked the sprites, and the art was beautiful; the story is a little uh..okay, but sometimes it feels like there's a lot missing. (Also Gwen is dumb as a rock sometimes.)

What gets me is that the lack of real 'strategy' to how you fight can make things annoying--it's also good you get unlimited continues, since I've gotten quite a few cheap deaths. (My favorite is still the fire-bomb monsters that explode when they die. It's even better when about 8 of them are dying at the same time!)

Right now I'm not speaking to OS because of the dual Unicorn Knight boss battle, which is being recockulously irritating for some reason. The Big Bosses at the end of the levels are never really that challenging once you figure out their moveset, and yet I'm having more trouble with these two asshole minibosses than anything else.

I tried to get this game the other day but Gamestop ran out of copies. The clerk also said he thought the game was "average."

When I was snooping around the OS section on gamefaqs, I saw people complaining about those unicorn bosses. Can't wait for that :P.

The battle system and strategy involved isn't anything groundbreaking, that's for sure. But I can forgive that if the game is interesting and satisfying, which it has been so far. And the enemy design is fantastic. <3

Odin Sphere is great so far. I'm still on Gwen's story however I forgot what chapter I was up to.
I'm currently in that firey...place.
The sprite animation is amazing and I've started to hang the hang of the whole alchemy thing. My only complaint about the game is that it sometimes takes too long to load. Or if I'm in a boss area, sometimes the boss takes forever to show up.

But overall, it's definitely an awesome game. :larry2:

I should get back to playing this eventually. Seriously, the combat system is so underevolved you'd think I was playing a SNES game. Can't exactly complain 'cause a modern-day side-scroller with this level of animation would take friggin' forever.

OS is a very interesting game.
If anything, this is a sign to the rest of the gaming community that 2D gaming is anything but a dying relic of the past.

Honestly, I love this game to death. The character designs and art are kickass, and the story gets interesting around the time you get to Merecedes' book.

I just finished Velvet's book, so I'm going back into everyone's stories and levelling them up for Armageddon. :d

I do have to say that I agree with the negative comments people have made about the lag, though. It's atrocious in the Netherworld. :[

Oh, then can you answer my question about character levels? Are they each separate? Once I beat Gwen's story, do any of my items and stats carry over or is it all from scratch?

If you mean to the next character's story, then not really. ;[

You still have your alchemy spells and recipes and such, but you have to level each character up individually.

However, when you go back into someone's book after you've finished their story, you start the plot over with the stats and items you had at the end. That way you can keep building their stats for the Armageddon book~

[And you can wipe out most of the bosses and minibosses from the early chapters in like 4 hits. It all works out! XD]

EDIT:
Not really related to the question at hand, but... For anyone who's having trouble with the dual unicorn knights [or really any dual mini-boss battle], what I did was I filled up on phozons before the battle and I used a combo of "Invisible" and "Phozon Burst" on them. That way, you can inflict a significant amount of damage to both of them at the same time without getting hit yourself. If you run out of phozons while invisible, you can also pelt attack items like napalm at them~

Seems like a kind of cowardly tactic, perhaps, but it worked well for me, and it's just utiliaztion of psypher skills and items, right? :d

I thought this game was pretty good. Battle system is a bit repetitive, and the item system makes me gag. But the plot is quite good, when all the little facets are revealed, and tt's fun playing as the different characters and getting to know their differences. Cornelius' and Oswald's battle yells are fuckin' hardcore. <3

Spoiler: Ending
The ending is REALLY depressing in many ways. Especially since everyone, and I mean EVERYONE, except for Velvet, Cornelius, Gwendolyn and Oswald die. In particular, I felt bad for Mercedes. She succeeded in fulfilling her part of the prophecy, but she died in despair nonetheless. ;_;

Considering how shitty the PS2 renders 2-D, yeah. Also, considering Sony's stance on 2-D it's a freaking miracle we got this over here.

Hm, I didn't have that much trouble with the Unicorn twins. Photon Bust + Napalm is my friend <3

God the Netherworld is annoying, though. I don't think I've been that irritated with a boss fight in a long time. And then having to do it all over again with Cornelius. :meekins: Keep me out of there~~~

Worst part is you have to fight her as everyone except for Oswald. D:

Did you do the 'Good' Ending? There's a specific character order you have to use in the last book.

Yes, I did.

Spoiler: Ending
When you do it in the incorrect order, the world is destroyed. But in the good ending, as I said, everyone except for Gwendolyn, Oswald, Velvet and Cornelius, die, and the world gets revived, with Gwendolyn and Oswald basically playing the role of Adam and Eve, while Velvet and Cornelius go into hiding to try and break the curse on both of them, as Velvet gets turned into a Pooka.

Well, it isn't entirely depressing; it's more bittersweet. Also, there's one detail I haven't mentioned.

Spoiler: Ending again, Biiiig spoilers
After the end of the last book, it returns to the attic. Alice speaks, talking about how depressing the ending was(the book ends with Gwen falling from high in the sky after killing the fully-grown Levanthan for good). She is about to leave, when she notices that the book's decoration is in fact a Valentinian coin. She takes it off, and just for the hell of it, says 'Pooka, dear Pooka, let me give you this coin in exchange for your story.' Nothing happens. Her mom calls her down for cake. When she leaves, a portal appears... and Cornelius and Velvet come out from it. They take the coin, and leave, leaving behind one last book, which shows the rest of the ending as I mentioned. Then, in a bonus cutscene you get by finding all the cutscenes(ie.playing all the Armageddon bosses with all the characters), you find that Velvet and Cornelius have, after millennia, finally succeeded in collecting all the coins. They break the curse on themselves, and prepare to live then next 80-odd years together.

EDIT: You know, it seems like every character's story has at least one character involved, whether he appears in another's story or not, who is a complete dick. I'm talking about people like Melvin, Ingway and Lord Brigan.

So I'm nearing the end of Cornelius' story. Does anyone have advice on how to fight those green blob thingies? A Napalm will take them out in one hit, but the onionnes are hard to come by in there. And licking them as a frog damages them, but...the frog is so slow and so vulnerable, I always end up dead after one lick.

Is there some other method, or do I just have to stock up on Napalm?

Unfortunately, yes. But, keep in mind that other attack potions will work. One thing that helps is using the Down+Square attack. There's a chance they'll drop something that you can use to kill them.

Fortunately, you'll only need to do this with Cornelius. The other 3 characters have attacks that will kill them easily.

Guess I'll need to do some grinding. :B I could probably use some bigger bags anyway.

I seriously wish your home base had some kind of storage feature, so you could dump off food items if you're missing an ingrediant or need more money. Or a coin changer! I had 38 1G coins a while ago but not a single 5G. Erion needs a bank.

It really doesn't matter what coins you use to purchase stuff. Unless you have to use Ariel Coins, Valentinian Gold or Commemorative coins. In which case, you should have at least one of each. You know, for cookin'.

But that's what I mean. I finally get all the ingredients I need, but no matter how much Valentinian Gold I have, I can't get me some spicy chicken without a 5G Ariel coin! And even if you buy something that's 5G with a 10G coin, they still give you back 5G in single coins instead of one 5G coin. It's irritating :(
