Hey folks, Orca here. I couldn't help but notice that there isn't a thread dedicated to the awesome console known as the Wii U (did a quick search and came up with nothing), so I decided to make one.

I picked up a deluxe version on launch day, and have been enjoying it ever since. The console features offer quite a bit - dedicated YouTube, Hulu Plus and other video networks, an exclusive social network known as MiiVerse, and a much-improved internet browser on which I am actually writing this post.

The console had a pretty strong launch lineup, with New Super Mario Bros. U, Scribblenauts Unlimited and more. The deluxe console came bundled with Nintendoland, which unlike Wii Sports is a full, functional game experience. Though releases have been rather sparse since then, upcoming games like Pikmin 3, Rayman Legends and The Wonderful 101 look promising.

So CR, what do you think of Nintendo's newest console? Is it a welcome alternative to other consoles, or awkward to get accustomed to? Love it or hate it, all discussion is welcomed. :godot:

I'd get one if there were actually games that I want for it out. (The game I'll end up getting it for is probably the new smash bros xP)

The Wii library was never as good as the DS', and my hunch is that the Wii U library won't be as good as the 3DS'.

Got the Wii U and I'm really enjoying it. One thing that sucks is the constant load times and how long it takes to update. As for games, it has a pretty strong launch line-up, though I only have Nintendo Land and New Super Mario Bros. U.

I would really like there to be a Metal Gear game on Wii U. The gamepad would work perfectly on an inventory or map screen. It would also be pretty sweet if an Ace Attorney or Professor Layton game came out on Wii U. I'm also hoping for 3DS support (similar to the Gameboy Player on GameCube) through I don't know if it'll ever happen.

Well that's part of the reason I'm so glad it's got a touch screen, allows for more games like Layton though it can probably work without touch screens and I think Layton has actually finished his adventures.

If a Layton game ever came out on Wii U, it would probably be an enhanced remake or HD collection. I wouldn't mind this because I don't own a 3DS, so I can't play Miracle Mask or the upcoming sixth game.

Bought it Day one (Europe), and been enjoying it a lot. I've played it pretty much every day, first with NSMBU, then with Trine 2, and then Little Inferno (really weird and cynical game... it's quite unique !). I've played a bit of Nintendo Land (beat three SP attractions, I believe). Next release I'm looking forward to is Ninja Gaide 3 : Razor's Edge, next Friday in Europe. After that... probably Rayman Legends.

As for the console, I really like the controller, it's just too bad you can't turn off the screen in game where it's not needed (like NSMBU, except for off-TV play). Would help with the really bad battery, even though it's only a real problem during long gameplay session (2h+). That's why I actually bought a Pro Controller (really great), for emergency cases, but mainly for upcoming Virtual Console games and games where the Gamepad isn't really useful.

But yeah, the Gamepad is really great, it feels really nice in your hands. Not too heavy, not too light. Sticks and buttons feel great too, and the overall thing feel really comfortable. Only complaint is, as I've said, not being able to turn the screen while playing if you don't need it.

As for the OS... I admit it can be a tad slow, but it doesn't really bother me. I really like Miiverse, and I often find myself just randomly posting stuff and answering to people's posts. It's definitely of the Wii U best features, which shows that Nintendo can do online stuff. It's probably one of the best online gaming feature I've got to use so far.
The eShop is really nice (even better than the 3DS's, which was much better than previous Nintendo stores), and that music is just sooo catchy.

Short version of my post : really enjoying the Wii U so far. Can't wait for more games (eShop and retail games)!

I got my Wii U for christmas and so far I've been really enjoying it. I have Nintendo Land and New Super Mario and the graphics are amazing. Especially for Mario, it's so bright and colourful - I love it.

Also, I've recently got into the Miiverse thing. I go on the Zelda community a lot and it is really addictive. Kind of like twitter, but you can draw on it. There are some really amazing drawings.

I don't have a WiiU but I know I will buy one - sole purpose being the new Zelda WiiU game.
But right now, I don't have that much cash. I think even a simple WiiU console would cost me an entire month worth of work. If I'm lucky. That thing costs 300€ and I don't know how often I get to work in the month, so I could get less than that...
Although I have heard that Battle Quest has an improved version of Skyward Sword's MC mechanics, so I'd like to try those out.

Can somebody tell me how the WiiU is different from the Wii?
I asked at Gamestop and I was told it's basically the same, except that it's about as powerful as a PS3.
And I really don't care if my console can give me YouTube or Bling or Whatever, I just want a freaking Game Console.
For Games.

Pfft! It's not the same as the wii. For one thing the Wii U has HD graphics...and some games require the game pad and at some points you use the wii remote...or sometimes you can use either or. (Super Mario Bros. U)

The game pad has lots of buttons and has a touch screen.

The game pad makes console gaming feel different. And once again I have no controller hand pain.

I don't care for HD Graphics.

And basically, the developers of the WiiU listened to the complaints of people constantly bitching about Motion Controls for the Wii and decided, "Fuck it, we'll give you both"?

If you don't care for HD graphics go with WiiU anyway, Nintendo has more colourful and innovative ideas and emphasizes them over big blockbuster graphics.

The DS touchscreen has been used for some amazing things over time I imagine that some real magic will come out on the WiiU with time. Hell ZombiU already does some interesting things for that.

Yeah the touchscreen can be done well at times on the DS consoles, if the game is entirely with Touchscreen - like Spirit Track or Phantom Hourglass. Although I believe Spirit Track had the option of using controls? But if it's a game that generally is with button controls, but also adds Touchscreen elements?
Harvest Moon DS/DS Cute did that and I find it incredibly tedious to grab the pen and tap the box just right to take one item instead of the entire bunch and moving it or equipping it. It feels awkward. And the port for Tales of the Abyss used the Touchscreen for the world map (Good Idea) and the shortcuts (Bad Idea) which is terrible, since you most likely will need two hands to keep your combo going and basically need a third hand to do the shortcut.

Well, we still proved that the Wii U is indeed different from the Wii...so I don't know what those guys from gamestop were talking about.

I don't care about HD graphics either, but the graphics on the Wii U are eye popping good. Besides, Nintendo needs to please the imbeciles who think graphics make the game.

Now playing the original Wii gives me nostalgia feels.

Sure if you want to keep things simple, Hotel Dusk, 999 and TWEWY all made phenomenal use of the touchscreen.
An I've played the ToTA port, tapping shortcuts with my thumbs is perfectly easy for me mid-fight.

I'm talking about games designed with the touchscreen in mind to make newer, innovative and mind boggling ideas, not just 'oh lets stick some shortcuts down there'. Granted there will be developers who do that as well but hey we all buy consoles for a select few games anyway. You yourself said you were getting it for Zelda, anything else that's incredible along the way is a bonus.

Please! Please! Please! Make a Starfox game for the Wii U Nintendo! :Bikini: It will make up for not making a Starfox game for the Wii. (Which was a huge disappointment for me.)

I was a huge starfox fan before I started to play Ace Attorney. :sad-maya:

Wow you're right I'd totally forgot there was no Starfox on the Wii just a big blip. Well I heard Starfox adventures didn't go down too well perhaps that put them off it a bit.

Which is a shame I totally could see Fox McCloud up there with modern platforming greats like Jak, Ratchet and Sly if it was done right. In fact I think I liked the brief bit of Starfox Adventures I got to try (I think at a cousins house).

I ADORE SFA despite it's flaws and goof-ups. I guess I'm just weird like that. :sillytrucy:
Of course I wondered what it would be like to play that cancelled Dinosaur Planet game.
I never guessed that all the flub-ups the Starfox series went through caused it to not get a Wii game...But I didn't think the series was that bad, I even liked Starfox Command.

I've read somewhere that Nintendo decided to push the series as a handheld-exclusive title, which is most likely why we didn't have a Wii game, instead getting Star Fox Command for the DS and the 64 remake for the 3DS. I don't know if that's particularly true, but even if it is I don't think it was caused because of Adventures as Star Fox Assault came out on the GCN three years later and did pretty well. Still, Shigeru Miyamoto has expressed interest in a Wii U iteration of the franchise, so there's always hope! :will:

Well, aside from the gamepad being used in the same way as the second screen on the DS (i.e. a constant map, inventory system, etc.), many have found the off-tv play function to be very useful. You can also video chat with anyone else that has a Wii U, and the other apps the system have are pretty cool too, like Nintendo TVii (interactive tv guide) and Wii Street U (Google maps). Miiverse is probably the biggest one for me, lots of great discussions and drawings in there made possible mostly from people using the gamepad like a tablet.

Fair enough. The system is lacking in new games for the time being - in part due to certain delays and/or lack of care from developers - so I suppose it would come down to whether or not you find the game scheduled for future release to be in your interest. I had a similiar issue with the PS3; I didn't pick one up until 2010 because nothing really interested me until that point. Oh, and it was ridiculously expensive, that didn't help.

There are probably mods that can let you do it, but it's not a native function, no. Wish it was, it can function pretty much like any regular tablet otherwise.

He's wondering why cellphones have so many gimmiks and I tell him, "Dad cellphones are advanced." But he tells me cellphones aren't so advanced if we can't brush our teeth with them or...summon a mug of beer with them yet. ^^;

As of the past decade, home consoles have had absolutely awful launches (I seem to recall the gamecube's being decent). I suppose it's unhealthy to think this way, but it doesn't disappoint me anymore when I see there is only one or two good games out for a console. There is such a rush to be the "First" that I think many companies forget that some amount of game quality must also be present; it's not enough to have the best hardware with nothing to play it on!

The Wii u has a handful of good games at launch...The problem is that they're 90% ports! :keiko: This is fine if you've never played them before, but they certainly aren't new games. Can't be too picky, I suppose. I will say that New super mario bros 445,389 for the wii u is entertaining and I am enjoying it.

Also, Blademaster Orca....you're just about the only person I still recognize from the old days that is still here. Good to see you're still around. :redd:

I never played the Mario Bros for the Wii and I don't really want to - it's just Toadstool/Peach getting kidnapped AGAIN and Mario and Luigi off to rescue her AGAIN. So playing the WiiU version isn't something I'd be looking forward to. I know that Nintendo Land, or so, as the Legend of Zelda Battle Quest with the Motion Controls from Skyward, but even more advanced and enhanced.
That would be fun to do.
Mostly, though, I want to get it cause I heard the Zelda WiiU title, the new one, not the ports of WW or MM or so, is coming out in May. And I would really like to play that...

Vocal exercises to gain a nice singing voice, been doing it since July of last year. Because, nobody can just get an amazing singing voice from the get-go. If our singing voices suck that means we haven't been exercising our vocal chords. (Similar to how we need to exercise to stay healthy and be set for swimsuit season.)

This is probably why so many people disliked High School Musical, a majority of the characters got awesome singing voices out of nowhere which is just weird. I have to agree with this, to me the main characters should've been Sharpey and her brother, since they were the only characters who do vocal exercises.

Fuck swimsuit season, I don't want to diet again (althought he last one was for health purposes and not weight) and I feel too uncomfortable in a swimsuit to even put one on. Although I do love designing them. :redd:
Yeah... I used to be in my school's band, the singer during Junior/Senior High (7th to 10th Grade in Germany) and one visit to a Concentration Camp has somehow rendered me incapable of singing into a microphone. No, I wasn't somehow shocked by the images. Still, thanks so fucking much! So I haven't sung into a microphone for.... s-six years!? So my voice has been suffering a bit, although I do still sing along to stuff that randomly plays - like Knight of Ratatosk's opening. Misono has such a loud, clear voice~
Then again, I sing in a way that I imitate the original singer, so my own voice wouldn't matter. XD

By the way, what's the general size of space a WiiU has?
8 GB or so? I think that's what I saw for the cheapest version in Gamestop. It was white, which I don't mind. I don't care the color of my consoles.
Well, except the 3DS - my Japanese one is teal-ish and to not confuse it with my European one, the European one is black. Although it now has a OoT Zelda case on it! XD

I never played the Mario Bros for the Wii and I don't really want to - it's just Toadstool/Peach getting kidnapped AGAIN and Mario and Luigi off to rescue her AGAIN. So playing the WiiU version isn't something I'd be looking forward to. Geez who cares if the plot is the same man? It's Mario it's never needed a big plot, though it's went for big plots with the RPG series. It's just straight up well-designed and put together platforming fun I don't think complaining about the same plot is a valid reason to criticise a classic Mario game.

Legend of Zelda is also bascially a "Save the World" thing, but it generally mixes things up and makes them seem different enough to enjoy. And I suppose my main gripe is Peach. I know it's all in good fun, but can't she start to learn to do something? How about making an official version of all the fangames I have seen where Mario is kidnapped and Peach has to save him?
And I not referring to the H Games!
...Or Super Princess Peach for that matter.
The hell, her tears cause plants to grow....

Yeah...on a magical island with emotion-powered plot devices. She also whacks enemies umbrellas ignores her steward's advice to stay and leave the Mario bro's to their fate, gets furious and goes on a rampage and wrecks stuff up.
Sorry the exact game you described isn't enough for you I guess.

Anyway at the very least she must display substantial management skills and leadership qualities seeing how the Mushroom Kingdom always seems to be in impeccable condition.

Basically, when I played Super Princess Peach it felt like it should be called Princess Tantrum Peach. It's like she's on a constant hissy fit and the emotions you can and have to use to advance are basically just bits of it exploding out of her. I know Peach was never supposed to be more than just the Princess that the Hero has to save from the Dragon, but.... come on, it's been ages. Can't they give her a little character development?

And why is she called a Princess if there is no King to rule? :payne:
Queen it up, Bitch!
