Final Fantasy IV, long a favorite of many FF fans, is receiving a new transformation: An updated version on the DS with new three dimensional graphics, lovely cutscenes, and an intensified story. To kick off a little celebration for this revival of one of my favorite games, I'm posting a few fun tidbits to spark discussion and reminiscence.

And as an extra bit of fun, here's the Love Theme from FFIV performed by a Japanese orchestra:

eh, I'll probably get it simply because I adore Final Fantasy, even though IV is not really one of my favorites. "Theme of Love" is pretty though, especially the orchestrated version. :acro:

I'm just hoping for a VI remake for the DS.

To tell you the truth, I'm not that big on the Final Fantasy series. Though I am able to see what makes it so appealing to others. I think part of what makes the series so popular is that you grow attached to the characters, among other things.

Anyway, before I go off on a pointless tangent, I'd just like to say woot! for Final Fantasy IV's remake.

Oh! But what do you mean by 'intensified story'? What's new in it (that isn't spoilerific)?

Really old news but I'm still looking forward to it.

Oh Square, will you ever stop porting every game of yours that might have sold okay a million times? No? Oh, okay then.

I don't understand why a remake like this is necessary. FFIII made sense because it never made it outside Japan, so there was a lot of international interest. But IV? Didn't they already remake that for PSX and GBA? And a new version of FFVI just came out, so if they announce a DS remake of that too... how many copies of the same game do you need?

FFIII's DS graphics were cute, but I don't think it benefitted all that much from the remake--or at least, not enough to make it really enjoyable for people like me who never played the original. "Intensified story" seemed to only mean "it HAS a story" to me, and a lot of the time it felt like the class system was completely unbalanced. When you make a game just to profit off of people's nostalgia, it feels kind of cheap.

FFIV had a better story than III, of course, but I can't imagine that some cute graphics will make me want to get the game when I already have the PSX remake.

Is Square too scared to do something truly original these days? Back in the late nineties they at least had Vagrant Story, and Xenogears, and several other non-FF-Franchise games. Is Mana the only one left?

...I'll give you a lot of those points. (And ignore the fact that you hurt my fragile feelings... :larry: J/K) You're right, a lot of the early FFs have been overported and remade. But I don't actually think they're targeting new people with this game. I think they're aiming this towards old fans of FFIV (like myself and my brother) who have never stopped loving it and playing it since when it originally came out. (Okay, maybe I haven't played it that long, but I have at least since the Playstation release. My big brother, on the other hand...) To me, it is one of the very best in the series, and the character designs and story were amazing for its time. So I'm thinking now, they have the opportunity to bring it up to speed and really make it more artistically and emotionally effective for the modern age, and I'm all for it. Plus, I love eye and ear candy. So this comes down to whether or not you're a fan of FFIV, like me. Yes, they should've just waited until now to remake the game. (Putting all those damn ports out in between has worn people out a little!) But I'm willing to forgive them because I love it.
(And I'd like to add that though Secret of Mana and Legend of Mana were great, recent ones have been lackluster...)

Sorry if this is old news, I guess... I just love FFIV, and I only heard about all this the other day...
Here's a link to show you how the update effects the graphics, compared to the original and GBA versions.
Old and New Graphics Comparisons

And for more fun, here's the piano version of the main theme performed by a fan who actually does quite well. :edgy:
FFIV Main Theme

And if you have not already played FFIV... All I can say is, I truly love it. The characters, particularly Cecil, were really endearing to me, and the gameplay is tried and true Active Time Battle with characters all assigned different job classes. (Although I understand the battle system is getting kicked up a notch for this new release.)

And Mana's been sucking for a while anyway.

It's a case of : "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." As R.D. Reynolds said, however : "It wasn't broke, but it was certainly worn out."

The last FF game I bought? FFIII. Before that? None of them.

I'll probably get FFIV because it'll be an "enhanced" remake or whatever (I didn't get the other one 'cause I dislike the GBA part of the DS, and figured they'd remake it before long).

It's getting pretty sad if you're someone who likes RPGs but hate the new FFs.

This is pretty much what I'm talking about: We all like our respective oldschool FFs, and we like it when they get really spiffy updates with enhancements. :edgy: I'm looking forward to an FFVI, too.

But come on! Aren't they any genuine FFIV fans around here who'd like to share a little?

Final Fantasy IV is truly my most favorite in the series. (I beat it like many, many, many times) Im really looking forward to this remake.

Final Fantasy IV had numerous ports for:

Super Famicom/Super Nintendo
Wonderswan Color (The music in that version sounds like regular NES/FAMICOM music)
Playstation (Part of the Final Fantasy Chronicles collection)
Game Boy Advance

Pretty much, I hope the DS Remake could have this hilarious line...

The Spoony Bard line has a good chance of being hacked. I heard they're going to try and De-Wooslify the game, like they removed Kefka's "You Son of a Submariner!" line and put in "You Son of a Sandworm!" Yes it's closer to the Japanese version, but it took away from it aspects of the characters that made me love them in the first place.

Don't forget the dwarves who say "Loli ho!" instead of "Rally ho!" :edgy: I don't know, you'd think they'd keep those things in for nostalgia...

The only release data I've found so far is that it should be coming out in 2008 in Japan. I haven't the faintest when, or even if, we're getting it. (Though I assume we are.)

As a throwback to the first FFIV port, here's the full opening on the Playstation:

Funny to see that now we're actually getting full 3-D. :phoenix:

Sucks, they're still going to censor it like the GBA port... :sadshoe:

But that's all right though, as long as they retain all the good stuff from the original. (I don't know if the scene where Rosa being executed from Golbez will change the SCYTHE to a WRECKING BALL...)

The Spoony Bard line was arguably the best line in any FF ever. Even the FFX "When I grow up, I wanna be a blitzball" line wasn't even that awesome.

In every version ported since its debut, the "spoony bard" line has been kept for the sake of nostalgia and humor. Besides which, it's actually an accurate translation:

Dictionary.com wrote:
spoon·y /ˈspuni/ [spoo-nee]
–adjective, spoon·i·er, spoon·i·est. Informal.
1. foolishly or sentimentally amorous.
2. foolish; silly.

...which is really a perfect description of Edward, at least as Tellah saw him.

I see no reason to take it out unless that dialogue changes drastically in the new version.

It's one of the more difficult oldschool FFs. I hope you take the time to finish this one, because if the previous version was any indication, it's worth it. I really love this game. :phoenix:

This remake will be so great, especially with all the extra story. Can't wait. Also, there'll be Dragon Quest IV-VI on DS, IV coming this winter. I never played those before so I'll get those too. I'll have like 2 SE games out of 3 for the DS :edgy:

I heard about the Dragon Quest games! Seems like Square-Enix is pumping their oldschool stuff right now, huh? I'm glad to hear that you guys are geared up for FFIV. Today, I've tried to dig up more info, but it's quite scant...

So rather than let you go away empty handed, I've brought this lovely Yoshitaka Amano illustration:

Ugh, that disappointed me so much. That was my favorite line of Kefka's.

I do hope they keep the "spoony bard" line. It's classic.

Unlike FF5 and FF6 that had good ports to the GBA, FF4 got a shitty port that sucked hard, while I would love to see FF5/FF6 in 3D FF4 NEEDS the update to make all the new content of the GBA version available in a not glitchy version.

Really? I actually thought the GBA port of FFIV wasn't too bad. I really liked the extra dungeons, though the last one is quite difficult.

FF4A had lots of glitches, it was a port of the really bad WS version of FF4, but instead of fixing the glitches that version had (or porting the SNES or PSX version) they added stuff to it, the new content is awesome though, but its not worth playing though a buggy version of the game to get.

Fair enough. Nothing ever seemed to glitch on me, but I might've gotten a later copy or something. (That kind of thing happens.) I liked their updated sprites, they looked really nice.

Today, I've picked a fan-made piano arrangement of the FFIV Boss Theme that I thought was well done:

How was the WonderSwan Color port bad? I've never played any other version of FFIV. I heard the GBA Port had some sort of glitches like problems with battles that the WSC version doesn't have.

This is what I heard from people, never owned/played a WSC or the WSC version of FF4, but from what I was told the version of FF4A is based upon that one which is why the glitches were in the game. :yogi:

While I'm not quite sure what intensified story really means, I know I'll be picking this up on its release date. FFIV is my absolute favorite in the series, having been my first real Final Fantasy (I had FFI for NES, but I was like 5 at that time, so I never really got too far until more recent years). So naturally, I'm a ridiculous fanboy for anything FFIV. Although I still don't know what I think about those new 3D graphics, Cecil sort of looks like a basketball balanced on a broomstick...

They had to cut like 3/4 of the original script they wrote for FFIV when they originall made the game <_<

Yes, unfortunately, a lot of things were cut. And then the American release was missing even more dialogue... I hope with this update, we'll finally get the full story. ^_^ And maybe the characters will be fleshed out even more.

The most common one I saw was having you character go twice or have turns activate when your ATB wasn't full or it giving the wrong character a turn when someone had a full ATB.

I adore IV to pieces really and am incredibly excited for this remake. I do have a gripe with it though that Croik already stated, the cutesy graphics don't feel like they do the game justice. I would so die of sheer joy to play a proper 3D makeup and see Cecil in true Paladin (and Dark Knight for that matter) form. <33333333333

The WSC verison has none of those problems, I think a lot of people will tell you it's the same as the GBA one without ever having played it (not surprising seeing how few people actually own a WSC)

IV never got a remake, only ports with no more no stuff than maybe a single extra dungeon or a short CGI movie. This is not only going to be 3D, but also going to include a lot of story it originally was supposed to in. The graphics are actually a good deal more realistic than FFVII's, and I'd yet have to hear someone complain that FFVII was too "cutesy" for its story to work. And there's always the option to not buy it, so I don't get all the complaining about Square-Enix releasing games. A lot of people who didn't started the series with VII actually enjoyed IV a lot and are looking forward to seeing it get its first proper remake.
