I have the first few anime episodes, and It's really nicely animated.

I always loved how
Spoiler:
at the end, when the girl in the cult appears, everyone was like 'Misa will carry on for Light!' and then like, a few weeks later when Death Note 13 came out (the data book) they had an interview with the writers and they asked 'so is the girl at the end Misa? Will we see a sequel?' and the author just deadpans, 'Huh? Oh, no, she killed herself off screen. That's just some girl.' I don't know if it was funnier to hear fans hearts breaking, or at just how bluntly he answered the question.

The author's bluntness for sure. Mainly because every time I hear that story, there's this little Seto no Hanayome-stye gag-version of the scenario that unfolds in my head and I think the way the author looks as he deadpans in it is the funniest thing ever. :<

.. You'd have to see it. ;~; The fans wibbling their arms in sorrow is also pretty hysterical ...

EDIT: I haven't been watching the anime version of Death Note, but I'm sure most of it was the same. I just watched the final episode though, and quite frankly .. I'm happy for the alternate ending. It's more or less the exact same outcome as the manga, but it's handled so much better. It feels like an actual conclusion, in ways, compared to just

Death Note is probably the greatest thing in anime to come along in a very very long time. Loved the manga, love the anime, love the movies, and I'm scared but still looking forward to seeing the dub when it airs this Saturday night xD

Death Note is really great. It's one of the few new series that I've genuinely liked, and it's obvious that it'll become one of those series that everyone knows- like Ranma, Eva, etc. I'm only on the ninth volume of the manga, in the middle of the second story arc (which Im not such a fan of...), and I love the story. It's so well executed, and the art is incredibly well done.

tl;dr: DN is awesome, go buy

I think I actually liked Light's and Ryuk's dubbed voices better than their Japanese Seiyus. L's Japanese voice was perfect though, so his English voice has alot to live up to. Great dub though!

Apparently, the reason DeathNote slowed down so much after... a point, was because the author wanted Death Note to have 108 chapters.

Spoiler: Why 108?
It's special! :D

  • 108 sacred within Hinduism, Buddhism and connected yoga practices.
  • A mala usually has beads for 108 repetitions of a mantra.
  • Hindu deities have 108 names. Recital of these names, often accompanied by counting of 108-beaded Mala, is considered sacred and often done during religious ceremonies. The recital is called namajapa.
  • Siva Nataraja dances his cosmic dance in 108 poses.
  • The number of sins in Tibetan Buddhism.
  • In Japan, at the end of the year, a bell is chimed 108 times to finish the old year and welcome the new one. Each ring represents one of 108 earthly temptations a person must overcome to achieve nirvana.
  • Zen priests wear juzu (a ring of prayer beads) around their wrists, which consists of 108 beads.
  • Many Buddhist temples have 108 steps.
  • The Chinese school of martial arts agrees with the South Indian school of martial arts on the principle of 108 pressure points.
  • Chinese astrology and Tao philosophy holds that there are 108 sacred stars.

And, even more interestingly...

  • In Ranma 1/2, when Shampoo is captured by the Ghost Cat, Ranma has until a bell is rung 108 times before a curse takes effect.
  • The Chinese novel The Water Margins describes the rise of 108 heroes who overthrow a corrupt government. Westerners are more familiar with a loose adapation of the novel -- the video game Suikoden. Each game in the series contains 108 recruitable characters, counting the hero. An anime OVA was created on this story as well.
  • In Neon Genesis Evangelion, the Marduk Institute is a coalition of 108 companies -- all dummy corporations owned indirectly by SEELE and NERV.
  • In the Halloween special episode of Comic Party Revolution, the characters explore a near-abandoned old school building. One of the characters breaks out a book listing 108 ways to deal with scary situations.
  • Lost: The lottery numbers add up to 108, the numbers have to be entered into the machine in the complex every 108 minutes, and more than a few other appearances. Unsurprising given the Buddhist references surrounding the DHARMA Initiative...
  • Shaman King has a magic rosary called The 1080, because it contains 1080 beads. Also, the Nakaoni ("Medium demon") is formed by 108 onis, and the Oh-oni ("Big demon") is formed by 1080.
  • In Code Geass The Emperor of Britannia has 108 wives.
  • Zoro from One Piece has an attack called 108 Pondo Hou. It translates to "108 Pound Cannon", but with the kanji used, it can mean "108 Phoenixes of Passion and Desire". This and several other attacks with similar names are ironic as he is an atheist.
  • In Devil Hunter Yohko, Yohko is the 108th devil hunter.
  • Get Backers' Kuroudou Akabane wields 108 scalpels as his weapon.
  • Final Fantasy Tactics The accesory 108 beads would prevent most, but not all, status effects.

And, perhaps most thrillingly:

  • The Pokemon Spiritomb is listed as number 108 in the Sinnoh Pokédex, weighs 108 kg, is said to have been formed by 108 spirits, and its base Defense and Special Defense are both 108.

I wondered the same thing... after all, even though its adult swim, they sure don't do the F-bomb at all. If they do do the intro, they might just cut it out or something or just stick with the first intro. I did like the first intro better anyways. Maybe its because of the animation...

It's fine to me. People always say dubs suck because they voices are so off. OMG, they don't sound exactly like the japanese!!! Though I think Light's voice actor is too Overused. He could at least try to sound different in each of his roles. I LOVE L's voice though!

I finished the manga a few days ago.

Best. Read. Ever!

I was half-tempted to quit reading after Vol 7, though. The manga drifted away from thrills and suspense and fell into more of a political warfare style. By the way, politics bore me. The only thing that kept me reading was to see who would come out on top in the end.

Spoiler: Very end spoilers
Light's downfall was brilliant. Watching the once calm, collected, methodical Light become the very thing that he was fighting against was very fun to see. Manical laughter, squirming on the cold, hard warehouse floor, blood dripping onto the ground, Light begging to live...what more could you ask for?

Also, Ryuk killing Light = pure win. I was wondering when the selfish, sociopathic bastard was going to die. He was cool at first but then he turned into an asshole. Was there any reason for him to kill Takada?! No. Absolutely none. All because he was so cocksure that he would beat Near. What a selfish bastard.

I've only seen the first episode of English dub Death Note but seeing it in color with music is like a breath of fresh air. I'm witholding watching anymore until they release the DVD. It's not entirely accurate to the manga. For example, Light's first two killings weren't chronicled until after he and Ryuk met. At least they didn't severely alter anything.

Hmm, I love Death Note. I watched each episode every week as it came out. On 3 different sources. Episodes 1-14 were at my friends house, because he had them. Episodes 15-32 were on YouTube, until they got rid of them. From there I watched them from various sites.

I find the second arc fine, I love the entire thing. I however started watching again for my therapy. Of the dub. I couldn't watch it, I know that seems weird but I'm like this, the first thing I hear I watch. If I had heard DN in English first I probably would have watched it.

I think you'll be a little disappointed when it comes to the end of the anime series. It deviates from the manga quite a bit, and personally, I prefer the ending in the manga.

What was really startling to me was looking back at the first book after finishing the series, and seeing how big Light's eyes were, compared to the end. (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/GoodEyesEvilEyes) Ugh, I can't find any pictures. Oh well. The same thing happens when he

I couldn't put the manga down at all until I finished the whole damn thing lol... even though I do think that I would've liked the whole series a lot more if it had ended

Spoiler:
After L died. I don't mind if the villain wins once in a while if the story was awesome... is that wrong? :<

I did read the whole thing before an anime was announced, so I guess I had a certain bias while I was watching the anime. Although I found it hilarious that Light's voice actor also did Tamaki from Ouran High School Host Club, and Mikami's voice actor also did Kyouya from the same anime XD. (If you've seen the anime, you'd have a hard time imagining Tamaki sound so EVIL)

All in all, the anime was pretty high quality, even though he looked like he was having an orgasm at the end of episode 1. xD But I still like the manga's ending better. It just felt more thought out, and it shows more of the aftermath of what happened.

Because of my obsession while reading it, it's gotten me two Death Note notebooks from friends as gifts, an exclusive art book from my ex, and a Death Note lighter which I wubs to death~~ <33

Ohhhhhhh yes. Epic. THAT's why you gotta love Matsuda.

But yeah, it's addicting as hell. I actually finished the entire manga a little less than a month after I started. I might have gone even faster if I had the money to buy them all myself (I borrowed several of them from my boyfriend). I still need to buy, like, five more -_-;

It's kinda interesting, this is about the only manga I've read that would not benefit from the "sidebars" that a lot of other series have. You know what I mean, the little side columns where the author talks about the story and characters (or complains about it and talks constantly about video games - I'm looking at YOU, Matsushita). That's one thing that bothers me about CLAMP - no sidebars. I dunno, having those around just makes me feel more involved with the story, like the author is talking to me personally. Okay, I'm rambling. But my point is, that wouldn't work in DN. It would detract from the story too much. Yeah okay, I'll shut up now.

So if you found a Death Note lying around, what would you do with it? I think I'd just keep it around and doodle in it. It is a nice notebook, after all. I'd just have to remember not to write stuff in it, like lists of celebrities with three names. Jennifer Love Hewitt would be fine since I don't know what she looks like, but Sarah Michelle Gellar would be a goner. And that would suck. I liked her in Buffy.

L's voice actor makes too much noise when he eats

Yeah I think sidebars would mess it up too. =/ Unless it was like...Light or L talking to the reader. Or Matsuda.
I'm reading the manga via library atm, until they build that Borders near us :>
