Don't be so pessimistic. If done well, which it has a fairly good chance of, it could be a revived classic, and you can't compare it to Alvin and the Chipmunks, completely different genres.

I guess we'll see. I have a feeling if they gear it as a G rated movie (of course i don't think there is such a thing anymore), some stuff that was in the original will be left out.

I think everybody's forgotten about cell by cell animation. I can't remember the last cartoon movie or show that came out that used the old method.

Producers haven't forgotten about cell animation yet, CG animation is just so much cheaper. Also, CG itself does not a bad movie make unless it's like Doogal or A&TC. If the core material and themes remain untouched, there's pretty much nothing to worry about.

After seeing the very crappy sequel to Secret of Nimh, no matter how bad this may turn out to be, it definitely won't beat that in terms of destroying childhood memories...

Off topic: Disney is releasing a new film in theatres (I don't remember when) that is a traditional cell animation. I think it's called "The Princess and the Frog" and it's based on the Frog Prince fairytale.

On topic: If done right, it could be a good remake of the movie, but I also feel that in this day and age they will cut out some of the darker elements. However, depending on the director maybe it will follow the book really close and keep those elements in. I haven't read the book, so I don't really know how faifhful the first movie is. I just know that most adaptions from that time vary.

This is something we'll really have to compare once the movie comes out. But in my opinion, I don't think that this new 3D style will work unless they:

a) keep in the the dark elements, but that may be likely not to happen since they would probably have to keep it to the younger demographic or pushing it to a possible PG-13.
b) put in some new elements that were present in the book but weren't in the original movie
c) added in all new scenes exclusively for this adaptation that make perfect sense to tie in with the book.

But even if these elements were present, they'd have to be pretty damn good to top Don Bluth's best animated movie & Robert C. O'Brien's fantastic overall tale.

I'm not sure if this will work out. Unless they stay true to the original material and the themes of the book, I think this remake will fail. I hope for the best though, this great story deserves more attention these days.
