Oh! My Goddess is an old (and I really mean old- it started in September 1988 and is still running!) manga series eventually turned into several anime adaptations, video games, OVA's, soundtracks, a feature animation film and a light novel (which the sequel to it has not been released yet ). It is created by Kosuke Fujishima.

Oh! My Goddess is about a young man named Keiichi Morisato who attends Nekomi Tech University. He is rather unlucky and has failed to get a girlfriend. One night, he accidentally calls the Goddess Help Line. A goddess named Belldandy is sent down from Heaven to grant his wish but he accidentally wishes for her to stay by his side forever. The series is then about the adventures of Keiichi and Belldandy and later on, her sisters Urd and Skuld as well as the Demonic Ruler of Hell, Hild and her servant, Mara.

The series is heavily based on Norse Mythology, as highlighted by Urd, Skuld and Belldandy (based on the three norns), Yggdrasil (Heavens Computer System) and much more.

This reminds me that I was just talking to a couple friends the other day about how I need to get around to watching that nice first season DVD box set I've had sitting in my room for a couple months. Part of it's that I just haven't had a lot of time to sit down and watch anime lately, but I think part of it might be the art style the TV series uses; it just bugs me for some reason. Maybe I'd be able to get used to it if I just start watching, though.

Anyway, saw the OVAs ages ago (first three were good but the last two were...weird) and the movie not quite ages ago but it was still a while back (I actually don't remember much about it other than the fact that it had Peorth), so I'll talk about the manga a bit.

It's cute and amusing, and I just love Fujishima's art style. I'd have a lot more of it - I have most of it up to volume 22 or so - but for some reason none of the bookstores around me carry the books anymore. I'll have to start shopping around online... Anyway, downside is the manga really starts off pretty slow (though you can see how Fujishima's improved a lot as an artist by looking at his old stuff compared to the new). The first few chapters or so are pretty much entirely about Belldandy's learning how real people act and Keiichi and his buddies being total gearheads (cars and motorcycles just don't interest me.) The manga starts picking up once Urd and Skuld show up, and really hits its stride when it enters the Lord of Terror arc, setting the tone the rest of the series will use, so if you're not sure whether you'll like the series, that might be a good place to check into it.

Belldandy is such a sweetheart.

She is, but the fact she's SO perfect and is ALWAYS the one to solve every major crisis that comes Keiichi's way (despite having at least two other goddesses hanging around at all times) gets a little annoying. Give me Peorth any day.

Kikuko Inoue DOES have a pretty voice, though.

Definitely true. I hate how Belldandy must be the hero each day. It's so annoying. Urd and Skuld never do a thing.

I'm disappointed that the anime omitted the scene where Keiichi stops the hentai addict from molesting Belldandy by chucking a tape deck at his head. It's one of the very few times he gets to help his woman without being self-sacrificing.
