Aww, this anime is so cute :3

I've seen a little bit of the anime and I own and have read all 7 volumes of the manga. It's a typical magical girl story but it has a bit of an environmental message in it.

I can't really decide which girl I liked the most... Maybe Ichigo or Zakuro, with Lettuce and Pudding in a close second. Didn't like Mint all that much :P

... I just noticed all the character's names are all food related:

Ichigo= Strawberry
Zakuro= Pomegranate
and the rest are pretty obvious XD

I think there was more but I can't think of them at the moment.

I've only flipped through a little bit of the manga, but it definitely looks adorable. I don't usually go for a lot of magical girl stuff, but the ten-year-old Sailor Moon fan inside of me might talk me into it yet.

Even with my limited knowledge, I am fairly confident that this is the best thing Tokyo Mew Mew-related thing that will ever be: TOKYO CRYSTAL MEW!!!

Yay for this thread!
I just finished watching all the episoded.
I really loved it :maya:
I heard from one of my friends that the Dutch version is totally different, there was no mew aqua at all. And Aoyama wasn't well, you know what i mean.
For who i like most, i really can't decide. I don't really like Pai and Taruto tough.

Haha, I got into TMM solely for the reason that I heard Mint was gay for Zakuro. Which, to be fair, you can see an argument for. Especially in that episode where they end up fighting and she pulls the old 'daisuki' card beloved of yuri fans everywhere :P
Did anyone else notice the art shift from the beginning of the series to the end? I always liked it much better after it matured a bit, the characters looked a bit more grown-up.

Cept modern day, with paedo's instead of witches. Done by a comedy show called Monkey Dust. We brits are funny.

I liked Tokyo Mew Mew when I was younger.
It was a typical magical girl show, with color coordinations and pretty transformations. I didn't watch any of the show - actually, I only watched the transformations. I read the manga instead. It was.... cute. Extremely predictable *coughAoyamacoughRyocoughDeepBluecough* and all that, but cute.

The sequel a la Mode was.... okay.
It was just as cute. I don't see why people absolutely despise it - yes, there's a new character. Yes she replaces Ichigo as the main protagonist and Ichigo is rendered powerless for.... some.... reason. But the villains were incredibly boring and I have no idea what they ever wanted to do.
So, while it did fail in comparison to the prequel, it's not something that should be burned like the Zelda CD-I games.

Wasn't the new character of al le mode Mary Sue-ish?

Maybe Zakuro should've been the leader? :/ Just a thought.

And the anime goes in a different direction than the manga, it actually gives episodes to flesh out the other Mew Mews and Ryou. (Ryou. <3)

I can sort of get that part - having her become the new leader and having the DNA of two animals and all that. But that's what Canon Sues are.... a Mary Sue that is part of the canon story. And while I admit that Berry is kind of that - and has the color white, which is apparently super important next to the color pink in magical shoujo stuff - that's not a reason why I would dislike the a la mode thing.
Like I mentioned, I found the villains to be incredibly boring or lackluster and incomprehensible. The previous ones sort of made sense - take over earth cause we're a bunch of bastards that are polluting it terribly. What was the Rose.... Crusaders... was that their name? Whatever, I have no idea what their plan was.

*hits myself on the head* d'oh! I'm not an expert on the May Sue Canon Sue thing....

The aliens get more character development in the anime was well...*thinking* I got to rewatch the series.

Wow, I've never delved that deep into the show like you guys did. Probably 'cause I was 14.

Anyway, the pink-haired girl (here in Brazil she's called Zoey, dunno about her official name, too lazy to look up) was my favorite.

Ichigo, her real name is Ichigo. It means strawberry.

As much as I am a dub purist, the anime should be watched in uncensored Japanese version.

The 4kids censored version was shallow, had poor writing, and had a bunch of unnessesary edits.

When I was 17 I keep on hoping Funimation would dub TMM and even though there was hope...Nothing happened.

And Zakuro (Renee) is my favorite. ^-^ In the original version she is Caholic but 4kids censors religion.

I know, right? Fuck 4Kids.

I'd agree with you about the "uncensored Japanese version" stuff, but I only used to watch animes when I was younger and stupider, and even then it was all on TV (Cartoon Network mostly). The only anime I watched by downloading the japanese version was Ranma 1/2 and it was my last (aside from buying Dragon Ball Z DVDs, but DBZ is hors-concours for me)

I liked Renee, but Zoey was better in young me's eyes, probably 'cause she was the "main" one.

She was catholic? I don't remember that.... then again, maybe it was mentioned in the manga and I never saw it as a big detail. I did like her appearance, though. I generally go for the darker characters in stuff...

I dunno why 4Kids - or general western companies - censor so much stuff.
I know that it's a standard thing, in Japan, kids are thought to be able to deal with "bigger/adult" stuff sooner. And religion isn't a huge taboo... no idea why it is a taboo in america.
I might understand them censoring anime like One Piece - that can be really bloody, heck, even the german version actually got the Japanese stuff and dubbed it themselves, but also cut things out. Like the close up of Nami stabbing her own hand? Cut. No idea why her hand bled later on. Or her shoulder, when she was actually ripping the tatoo open with her nails.
But stuff like Tokyo Mew Mew? Or even YGO, okay, that was supremely dark at times - but putting clothes over a bare midriff? WTF? Belly buttons are EEEEVIIIILLLL? Is that it?

Zakuro wears a holy cross necklace and her weapon looks like a holy cross, in the uncensored anime she is often seen praying alone at a church.

But yes, in Japan there's are different standards for childsafe and Japan is religiously diverse.

Tokyo Mew Mew, One Piece, and Yu-Gi-Oh, are acceptable for children in Japan.

That's why I get super peeved when people think those anime are for adults because regardless of the darkness of those anime I don't see what's so 'adult' about them. Even One Piece, despite the drugs/alcohol and violence sometimes it seems like a childish version of Pirates of the Carabean. And there are no adult situations.

Fair enough, but what about Sailor Moon?
Naoko herself said that she wanted to create a story with a sexy schoolgirl. And we get to know Usagi when she's 14 and gets the hots for a guy who is 18 already. The anime was a bit..... different. They changed a ton of things, which makes it seem..... different from the manga.
Thank god they're making a new Sailor Moon anime that follows the manga closely.
And look at the later seasons. People getting their hearts/crystals ripped out, Neptune and Uranus die in a church, people get shot, there's eletricity going on, bondage, etc, etc. I'm glad america never got their hands on Sailor Moon Stars...

I may be wrong but isn't Catholic ... Christianity... I dunno the difference, a widely spread religion? Why would it be so terrible if americans saw something catholic? I mean.... I might understand if they were annoyed that they see something that has Buddhism or Shintoism in it. But... catholic?

So Sailor Moon was also targeted towards otakus? o_o

And Neptune and Uranus got murdered in a church?......NO!!!!!

Ok, the reason I don't have a problem with knowing that a majority of anime we watch is actually acceptable for children in Japan is because I'm not a huge fan of cartoons-for-adults. (With an exception of a few)

Hmmmm, now that you mention it, it is strange. And it's not like TMM was preaching a religion.

And I don't know the difference of the two. All I know is Catholics were the original Christians.

Otakus? What does a sexy schoolgirl have to do with otakus?
Just because something is supposed to be kind of sexy doesn't mean it was created for otakus - whether it be the heavyset, 40-year-old virgins who collect stuff kind or the people who just enjoy things and collect stuff from things they like on the side. It was just Naoko wanting to draw a sentai-ish story with a sexy schoolgirl.

Well... getting their heart crystals ripped out... practically counts as killed.
They were dead for a while. In the anime, at least. They had the talismans already in the manga - a reason why the talisman search was in the anime, because Naoko hadn't drawn far enough yet, so they drew some filler. Includes the Rainbow Crystal mini-arc in the first season and the Doom Tree before the actual events of the second season.

Boy I got sidetracked from Mew Mew...

Sorry, just the first thing that came to my mind. Besides, when I watched a Japanese episode of Mew Mew there where some Japanese men wanted to sex Ichigo after seeing her transformation.

Who knows, there could be a Sailor Moon topic around here...I still have yet to watch the series uncensored though. I love Uranus and Neptune's relationship though, but as a kid I was so colored confused. I had a hard time telling whether or not Uranus was a boy or girl and regardless I still knew there was something going on between them.

Yeah that was a terrible mistake Cloverway did.
Wanted to remove the fact that Neptune and Uranus were lovers and turned them into cousins.... but still kept scenes where they hold hands and say stuff, so they created incestual lovers...
