Austin sighed with relief as the others exited the restaurant, resuming his swinging and attempts to make it to the exit himself. But then he felt a tingling in his stomach. He looked down to see the bloody tip of a sword poking out of it.
"Too slow," a vampire whispered in his ear, then pulled the sword out. Austin crumpled to the ground.
Continue?
Yes/No.
"Yes. I can't die here. Not yet." Austin was revived, but weaker as he picked his axe back up.
"Bring this guy down to his last hit point, but don't kill him. As soon as we do that, we'll go after his "friends." I bet they would be interested in our proposal for getting him back." Austin growled and started swinging more furiously, but soon he found the screen popping up again and himself having to hit "Yes," again. He knew he wouldn't make it the way things were going...He had to do something else. He concentrated on his wolf side as he died again, hoping it would work...

Frustrated by the human pace the brothers had set, Zoey sprinted slightly ahead of them, an image of Cairus fuelling her to keep running. Sh grabbed the hands of both brothers, seeing a slightly above human speed and using her own momentum to pull the brothers' strides to be longer and faster. "Cairus.." she whispered. Or thought she whispered. She'd actually meant to say the name of her werewolf.

Austin felt a rush of energy as he transformed into wolf. It worked! He smiled triumphantly. In wolf form, very little could kill him and he could match the speed of a vampire. He started running around and biting and killing. But then about ten vampires jumped on him at once, and even though he tried his best to get them off, he was dead again. There had to be a strategy he could use. Suddenly, Austin smiled again as he opened his mouth and howled the angriest song he could muster, praying that, despite how quiet his howling was, it would work.

Cairus sat with his legs hanging casually over the edge of the flat roof. He held his chin propped up with his hand, elbow on his knee as he surveyed the street below disinterestedly. It seemed that the news of the brawl hadn't yet reached this area of Tepple - the citizens seemed calm enough. Eyes flitting from human to human, he lazily considered having a snack, but decided that he had too much on his mind. His lips rose into a slight smirk as he remembered Zoey's reaction to seeing him. It certainly was a somewhat...affectionate one. Remembering the werewolf whose scent was all over her, Cairus' smile faded. She has let herself grow close to others. Intimately, with that one dog. That won't do, he thought, rising gracefully to his feet. Hearing a small voice below, Cairus looked back down over the edge. "Cairus..." He smiled. That's right, Zoey Redbird, he thought at her before disappearing in an invisible blur of speed.

Austin was proud of himself as he leaped out of the way of one vampire, who hit another. And then all hell broke loose. Everyone started attacking each other, no longer trying to beat Austin. It worked. Austin smiled. Things couldn't go much better for him right then. He'd survive. Then, he thought about Zoey. How she seemed to like Cairus...Austin shook his head to clear it. No. Zoey loved him, and that was good enough. Austin jumped out the door, then he stopped howling. He smelled Zoey. Even though there had to be other vampires around town, he could distinguish her scent from thousands. He felt himself going toward it, then he stopped. He was in his wolf form, and he knew that meant even though it was day time, the wolf was prone to taking over...He tore off in the opposite direction of Zoey's scent, and soon was out of Tepple. Alone. Like he was when Jeremiah...
Darn it, don't think. Run! Austin ran further away.

Jay and Jeremy could barely keep up with Zoey as she began running at a much faster pace, so as Zoey dragged them along, they had to continually hop from one foot to the other in great strides, which invigorated the brothers immensely. Maybe someday, they hoped, they would be able to run as fast as she could without the helping hand they were getting now. As it was right then, though, even magical augmentation wouldn't be enough to help the brothers match the speed Zoey could run. They knew if they let go, they'd probably fly forward, faceplanting straight into the ground. Therefore, they held on for dear life, amused and frightened at the same time. Even though it wasn't the fastest she could go (Jay and Jeremy both knew this, and that she was probably having difficulty restraining herself from darting off) she was easily outpacing the brothers' top speed.

At that time, they didn't mind the torrential rain that was coming down, nor did they even notice it. Then, they did think about it, and laughed to themselves how they were trying to escape from water and electricity, the two very elements with which the brothers decided to imbue themselves at the start of their adventure. They thought about how interesting it'd be to be able to induce storms in such a way as this, then put the thought aside, knowing that not only was that day much too far off to worry about now, but that they might anger whoever was in charge of controlling the weather in the first place, whoever that may be.
"Austin... I hope he's alright," Jay suddenly said, almost whispering. The thought had just occurred to him as his mind was wandering.
Jeremy sighed in response and added, "Yeah, but he can probably take care of himself... I hope."
"He seems resillient enough, but it IS an ambush, so..." Jay trailed off, then changed the subject. "For how long have we been running, anyway?"
"I do not know, just as I'm not sure exactly how long this street is," Jeremy replied. 'Or have we even been running straight this whole time? We could've made turns and not even realized it. Such is the power of imaginative discontinuity, though,' he thought afterward.
'Ah yes, what we see as a straight-as-an-arrow street could be a twisting and turning road to others,' Jay replied in his mind, 'Also, when we left the restaurant, did we turn left, right, or run straight forward out of the door?'
'Personally, I think we turned left and headed back the way from which we came, but I wonder about Zoey and Austin...' Jeremy responded. The brothers were deliberately trying to get their mind off running to make it more automatic and less tiring, which was working pretty well at the moment.

((Sometimes I do wonder about this stuff, people. The strange, wandering mind of mine always keeps me perplexed. Contribute your thoughts on the subject or don't... whatever.))

Suddenly, Zoey stopped. She grabbed the brothers' bodys to stop them flying forwards before placing them back on their feet. She looked up at a building, eyebrows furrowed. Why doesn't he just...? Shaking her head to herself, she started walking. Shoving her hands into the pockets of her dress, the rain dripping from her hair. "We are far away enough," she said after a long silence.

"H-hello? Can you hear me?" he asked.
No response. Just another rasping sound.
"Are you alright?" asked Mika, cautiously walking upto the location of the sound.
"Stay... away... I... have to... feed..." came a reply. The voice sounded female, but strained... and in pain. Mika looked in its direction... and saw in the darkness, a huddled up creature. It wore the remains of a black t-shirt, and running trousers, ripped at the sides. It was a werewolf.

Mika realised this. He began to slowly back away. But the wolf turned... and looked at him straight in the eye. Then it drew itself to it's full height... and lept at him. Mika then broke into a run! The werewolf was unusually fast! Mika was running at his top supersonic speed, but still the werewolf was proving more than a match, as it gathered more speed from each of its bounds!

Suddenly, Mika caught his foot in a wood-loop and tripped, sending himself flying, then touching the outside mud in a nasty slide. He turned over just in time to see the wolf about to pounce on him. He screamed... he thought nothing could save him now. He just hoped the game would allow him to respawn...

Austin was running toward an abandoned temple when heard a hoarse female voice say, "Stay...away...I...have to...feed." He sniffed the air immediately, but he didn't smell any vampires. Just a human and a werewolf. Still, he ran towards the scents to check up on things. Just then, he heard the human scream and saw a wolf lunge at the guy. He did the only thing he could think of. He tackled the wolf mid-lunge, taking it down and to the side with him. He snarled at her.
"We werewolves aren't like vampires. We don't need human blood," Austin said softly. His eye still trained on the wolf, he pulled out some of the meat he bought at the market. "Here." He held out the meat with one of his paws. "Eat this. There are more creatures not far from here. You can hunt one of them."

Mika gasped. A sigh of relief. He slowly got up, dusted off his suit, and turned around to face his savior.
"Ah, thanks much!" he panted. "I'm Mika by the way. Mika Cadenza." He paused for a moment.
"Say... don't take this the wrong way... but are you from the real world?" he asked. He was hoping that if this was another player, they might know how to get out of the game.

Austin turned and smiled at Mika.
"That is up for debate," he said. "But if you mean to ask whether or not I am another player, then the answer would be 'yes.'" He got off the other werewolf. "I don't think it would be wise to stay here. This way." He walked off at a pace much too slow for him in his wolf form, but it would still be a brisk walk for a human. As he passed Mika, he added, "We don't want the wolf to decide to attack you again, do we?"

"I've been here ever since the game came out, basically," Austin said matter-of-factly. He sniffed the air again before continuing. It didn't...smell like they were still after him. But then why was he so jumpy? Austin smiled serenely. "And to think there was a time I would have given anything to have an adventure." He sniffed again. He couldn't place his finger on it, but something just didn't seem right. He stopped for a second and scanned the area very carefully. "Do you ever get the feeling you're being watched?" He turned around, but no one was there besides Mika. Could it have been him who smelled so odd? Austin shook his head to clear it. He must have been going crazy from being trapped in the game so long.

Darting behind a tree soundlessly, Cairus smirked to himself. Werewolves. They're all the same. He'd used his air element magic to mask his scent automatically since he was a mere level 20. Continuing to follow them, he slowly allowed himself to make more and more sound. Let's see how long it takes for those dogs to notice.

Austin heard something and wheeled around, growling softly. But it seemed to only be noise. No, someone or something was definitely following them, and whoever or whatever it was wanted them to know this. Austin smiled slightly. He knew the only thing cocky enough to actually make it known that they were following a werewolf would be a vampire.
"Whoever you are..." he whispered to Mika. He was glad when he was in wolf form, he was really tall. "Stay under me." He took a large step so he was over Mika as he walked. Granted, it was kind of a tight fit for the guy, but it would suffice. If the vampire wanted to attack the human, they would have to fight Austin for sure.

"If I wanted the human, I would have him already." He felt a wry amusement at the werewolf's protectiveness. "No...it is you who intrigues me, werewolf."

Mika got up from under Austin and walked to his side.
"And you are...?" he asked. He had a sneaking suspicion that this vampire was going to attack someone. Lucky I chose speed as my main attribute. He thought. Still, If I almost got terminated by that werewolf... perhaps taking on an experienced vampire is pretty much the wrong thing to do. He folded his arms and tapped his right hand index finger near his elbow, waiting the vampire to speak again.

Cairus raised a perfect eyebrow at the human. This one is either brave or foolish. Most humans would run at rhe mere sight of me. However... He returned his scarlet gaze to the werewolf. These two don't seem to have heard of me. "That is a rather ambiguous question, human. Do you ask for my name or who I am?" He gave an amused twitch of his lips. Oh, toying with the prey...

"...a wise choice," Cairus commented. Turning to the wolf, he spoke more to him than the human. "Some say I am the most powerful of vampires in this game world." He smirked to show that he didn't particularly care what people called him. "I'm known in some towns as the 'angel of death'." He paused. "Inaccurate, because I am far from an angel. I am quite clearly a vampire." Cairus brushed some stray black strands of hair from his face. "As a summary, I am a vampire who will not give you more information than necessary. I like my air of mystery, as it were. Oh, and one more thing," he said, holding up a finger and looking dangerously into the wolf's eyes. "I own Zoey Blackbird."

"What are you, stupid, Mr. 'Angel of Death?' You can never own anyone," he said simply. "But if you mean to tell me you and Zoey were in a relationship, then fine. Good for you. But she is with me now." He looked Cairus in the eye. "And it's going to stay that way, no matter who you think you are."

"Mutt? Wow. Never heard that one before," Austin said sarcastically. Then, he locked eyes with Cairus again. "Thanks for telling me, though. Are you quite finished now?" He glared slightly. "Because Zoey cannot be owned by anyone. And I'm not ashamed to admit that I love her more than I love myself. Which, by the way, is saying a lot because I'm so narcissistic, even Narcissus is like, 'Wow. Even I don't love myself that much.'" He chuckled at his joke. "But in all seriousness..." He resumed staring at Cairus. "I love her more than life itself. You can't expect she'd come running to you anymore."

Appearing unfazed, Cairus quirked an eyebrow. "Oh, so you love her? And what makes you think she loves you? It is against all of Blackbird's instincts to even let you survive, let alone grow to an intimate relationship with you. And even if she has convinced you thus far..." He gave a sly smile. "I know you saw me with her at the little..brawl earlier. She seemed quite...content with my prescence." In reality, Cairus was genuinely surprised. A werewolf love a vampire? Preposterous. Even so..Blackbird getting killed by the wolf simply wouldn't do. It would ruin everything.

"Surely someone with a deep, intimate relationship with Zoey would be able to tell whether or not she loves me," he said. "But I can't speak for her. You could just ask her yourself." He smiled slightly. "Yes, I am aware of how very content she seemed at your presence. But didn't you ever stop to notice how...content she is whenever I'm near?" He then smiled wider. "If you really think you're a better match for her, you're right. But it's her decision who she wants to be with. Not ours."

Cairus' smile disappeared. This wolf was cocky. Very cocky. And seemed to believe that he deserved Blackbird more than him. However...the wolf loved her. Which was more than Cairus could say. "Oh, believe me I'll...ask her." A grin appeared on his face. "And you won't be there to protect her when I do." With a mocking wave at the human, Cairus disappeared.

Only having time to turn her head at a whiff of a familiar scent, Zoey felt a sharp force hit her midriff and she doubled over before the pain caused her to pass out. In front of Jay and Jeremy, Zoey seemed to buckle of her own accord before disappearing.

Austin growled after Cairus. He ran to where the vampire was and sniffed. The vampire definitely warped. He could have been anywhere.
God damn it! he thought. Cairus was going to kidnap Zoey, and there was no way for him to protect her.
"...Change of plans. I'm going back to Tepple. I have to save her." He was still where Cairus was just moments ago. "If you wish to join me, get on my back. If not, I wish you good luck on your endeavors." He sat for a sec in a way which would allow Mika to climb up, if the human so chose.

If I go now, I might find someone else. And they might know a way out. If I go with him, I could be killed...

The guy needs to find his girlfriend! He saved you from death, it's the least you could do!

Mika opened his eyes. He smiled at Austin.

"You saved my life. And I aim to pay you back for that. So, of course I'll help you, no matter the consequenses!" he shouted, dertermined to help his savior. He jumped onto Austin's back, and waited for the next mve.

Austin smiled. This guy might not be any help at all, but for some reason, Austin felt it was a good thing Mika was going with him anyway. Then, he hesitated slightly. Austin was in wolf form. What if he lost control and tried to kill Zoey instead of save her? He had to be one with the wolf to stay in this form. If he wasn't, then he would turn back into a human, and that would mean...He shook his head to clear it and ran back to Tepple, following Zoey's scent as soon as they were in the city. He had to find her before it was too late.

The brothers were recovering from the sudden stop, barely able to stand straight as their legs throbbed from the intense workout. As they were getting their bearings back and their vision started to clear, they saw Zoey seem to keel over and disappear.
"Zoey!" the brothers shouted at the same time, wondering if they were just imagining things, but then looked again and saw nobody there.
"Damn it! Damn it all!" Jay exclaimed, not caring who was listening.
"There is only one person we know of that could make Zoey disappear like that (barring the possibility of her having teleport powers herself which I find unlikely), and that is..." Jeremy explained, stopping short.
"What was it she called him? Ca... Ca..." Jay wondered, still in shock from the sudden kidnapping, "I remember it, but I'm not saying it." That vampire was going to become one of those "he who has no name and is evil" type of people, the brothers knew it.
'He's got all the advantages. He can just run off--well, warp off, but that's beside the point!--and we have no idea where he goes,' Jay thought to himself.
'The worst part is, she was just STANDING THERE! We were LOOKING AT HER, and he still grabbed her... Okay, we need to calm down, panic will get us nowhere,' Jeremy angrily replied in his mind.
'That's what I hate about always-player-versus-player games like these; get in early and you get a head start and can mess with everyone else who comes in,' Jay pondered, 'We're no match for him in our current state, he could kill us instantly if we look at him funny.'
'First, Austin gets caught up in that ambush, and then while he is occupied and we are disoriented, "he" disappears with Zoey. What is Austin going to think of us when he finds us and she is gone?' Jeremy couldn't help but wonder. Of course, what Jay and Jeremy didn't know was that Austin had made it out sort of alive and probably knew about Zoey's circumstances. The brothers went to the wall of the nearest building, leaned against it, and sat down on the ground. They put their hands on their aching heads and began wondering what the hell they had gotten themselves into by coming here. They knew things may have gone better, or worse, or even not at all if they hadn't decided to knowingly trap themselves here, and that's what kept their hopes alive; knowing that, if nothing else, they are two more people who could make a difference.

Austin stopped as soon as he saw Jay and Jeremy.
"...I'm too late, aren't I?" he asked, sniffing around. He could smell both Cairus and Zoey, but he couldn't smell a trail. "They could be anywhere...The diner. Maybe they're back at the restaurant." Austin seriously doubted this revelation, but it was his only hope right then. He then sat down to allow Mika off his back. "Please get off, Mika. If my thinking is correct, I'll be walking straight into an ambush." What if they aren't there? I'd be going into an ambush for nothing...
But I have to do something, don't I?

As Zoey slowly regained consciousness, she realised first that her feet were bound, but not her hands. With an experimental tug, her stomach sank at the revelation that it was made of diamond, so impossible to break. Opening her eyes slowly, she saw that she was in a dark room that looked rather plain, like the bedroom of an average, peasant NPC.

"Zoey," a voice said pleasantly. "How nice it is to see you again." Turning towards the source of the voice, Zoey saw Cairus elegantly perched on a plain wooden chair, his elbows resting on his knees so that he leaned forwards slightly. "I certainly wish I could say the same," Zoey said bitingly, hands balling into fists.

Cairus smiled.

"Sure." Mika replied. He slid off Austin's back, then walked to beside him.
"So if we can't go that way... Austin, you've been there before... isn't there like... a back entrance?" asked Mika, thinking of new potential plans.

Jay and Jeremy looked up as soon as they saw Austin come near them. Luckily for them, they realized, Austin knew what happened.
"There was nothing we could do," Jay admitted sadly, "We were running quite fast, faster than the two of us have ever been forced to run before. When we stopped suddenly, we were a bit disoriented. Next thing we know, Zoey buckles over and disappears. We had to look again to make sure we saw what we saw and... unfortunately, we had." The brothers stood up as Jay explained the situation.
"We knew it was... him as soon as we regained our bearings," Jeremy commented.
After Austin mentioned the restaurant again, Jay piped up and suggested, "Hey, we have to redeem ourselves somehow, so you ought to let us come with you. I'm sure we could be of some help against any creatures that remain." 'Not to mention we could get a level or two out of it,' he thought afterward. Just then, they looked behind Austin and saw another human, apparently not scared of Austin.
"Ah, hello there," Jay greeted, approaching Mika, "I am Jay Slezak, and my brother Jeremy is right behind me. We're good friends of Austin's. What's your name?"
"A pleasure to meet you," Jeremy said, walking over to stand beside Jay, "Sorry it's not in... better circumstances." The brothers were gaining hope once again, but they were still really worried about Zoey, and that worry subtly showed on their faces.

"So..." Cairus said, rising from the chair to his imposing standing height. Zoey sniffed, realising that underneath his beautiful vampire smell, he very faintly smelled of... Zoey's eyes grew wide. "Austin!"

Cairus laughed and clapped his hands together, seemingly delighted that she had noticed. "Indeed," he said, bending over at the waist to look into her darker eyes. "What about your...canine friend?"

Panicked, Zoey wrung her hands in her lap. "What have you..." she started before Cairus took a step forwards so that he was as close as possible without tripping over the chair. "Oh, he's fine. Worried about you, I expect." This last statement was tinged with some bitterness.

Realising that Austin must be looking for her, Zoey cried out suddenly. "Austin!" No sooner had his name left her lips then Cairus clapped a hand over her mouth, a sad look in his eyes. "Tell me, beautiful blackbird...Do you love him?"

"Hm...There wasn't a back entrance that I saw, but now that I think about it..." Austin thought aloud. "I'll do some sniffing around." He smiled. "If there isn't one, we'll make our own." He then grew serious again. "But if it's too dangerous, I want you three to get yourselves out. There are certain things too dangerous for..."
"Austin!" The voice rang loud and clear in his head. Zoey! It was Zoey's voice. But it was impossible to tell where it was coming from. Then, Austin remembered how they seemed to be able to read each other's thoughts when they were together. Maybe it would still work when they are separate?
Zoey, don't worry, Austin thought. I'm coming for you. Just hold on.
"We don't have much time. This way." Austin went at a painfully slow trot so the others could keep up. He wished he could do this alone, but...He probably would need their help later...Austin was getting more and more frustrated as he trotted.
